by:Larm reveals new international program ‘International Feel!’ featuring East India Youth, Deers and SOAK with more names still to be announced
By:Larm is turning 18 in 2015. Since its foundation, by:Larm has slowly but surely developed from a small industry conference into a fully-fledged music festival, to the point where it is currently Scandinavia’s biggest festival showcase for new Nordic talent.
Both new and established artists have played by:Larm in previous years, and the objective has been to display to the world the best music to be found in the Nordic region. By:Larm is a place to discover your new favourite bands, the ones which will soon be appearing on much bigger stages around the world.
Now the event prepares to take things a step further by inviting international artists to join the party!
The idea to go international first cropped up a couple of years ago, when by:Larm booked US music veteran Todd Rundgren for the conference, but couldn’t allow him to play because he wasn’t a Nordic artist. This felt out of date and as a result by:Larm Head of Programming Joakim Haugland made the decision to take things one step further – and the result is the brand new concept ‘International Feel’.
International Feel will comprise 10 to 15 international artists, out of a total of around 100 acts, performing at by:Larm 2015. These are not established stars, but up-and-coming international names.
With International Feel by:Larm aims tempt international media and industry figures to visit Norway to meet up and discover the next Nico & Vinz – the country’s next cultural export.
“With more international attendees, we’ll have their focus entirely on Norwegian and Nordic music for four days. That will be guaranteed to benefit the Nordic music industry in the long term,” says Joakim Haugland.
The first three names for International Feel! at by:Larm 2015 Are East India Youth, Deers and SOAK.
Deers
Following two quite-literally barn-storming tours across Europe, featuring two sell-out appearances in London and support slots with The Libertines and Black Lips, the quartet Deers from Madrid have been described as “Europe’s most exciting new band” by the NME. Having only been together as Deers for less than a year, they manage to nevertheless perfectly display their chemistry. The intertwining vocals, the warbling guitars, are all precariously held together to create the most refreshingly spontaneous pop songs you’ll hear this year.
East India Youth
East India Youth is William Doyle from Bournemouth. His music brings together glorious orchestral pop, noise and motorik Detroit techno, threaded together with ambient and contemporary classical passages. At once uplifting and bleak, both brutally cold and gloriously buoyant, his 2014 debut album reaches for new heights in electronic music and surpasses them. After being featured on The Guardian’s list of 2014 breakthrough artists, the crescendo of East India Youth’s year came in October when he was shortlisted for The Mercury Music Prize.
SOAK
SOAK has won widespread praise, and comparisons ranging from Laura Marling to Cat Power, for her textured tales of adolescence, family and friendship. Still just 18 years old, Bridie Monds-Watson has been performing in her home of Derry since the age of 14. Then, in 2014 she became the first signing to CHVRCHES’ singles label, releasing the beautiful ‘Blud’ and touring with the likes of George Ezra and Tegan & Sara. Now signed to Rough Trade records, her forthcoming album will cement Bridie Monds-Watson’s ascent from a raw talent to a unique artistic voice for 2015.
