2024 Summer Festival Line Ups Reveal Immediate Benefits of Showcasing at ESNS
Just six weeks after showcasing at ESNS, emerging artists have secured more than 100 spots on the line-ups of the best summer festivals across the continent, taking full advantage of the benefits of the ESNS Exchange programme.
With already 111 confirmed shows by 65 acts from 23 countries, playing at 45 festivals in 23 European countries - excluding their home country, new talents are making their mark on the European festival summer. The ESNS Exchange results also show a balanced gender distribution of artist bookings based on the Keychange standard, with a 50/50 gender split.
Thanks to the ESNS Exchange programme, promising European talents such as Catt (de), Chalk (ie), Fat Dog (uk-en), UTO (fr), CMAT (ie), YĪN YĪN (nl), English Teacher (uk-en), and more have been booked to play multiple shows at festivals outside their home country this summer, creating opportunities for emerging talent to perform at major European festivals such as Best Kept Secret (nl), Eurockéennes de Belfort (fr), Haldern Pop Festival (de), Mad Cool Festival (es), Pohoda (sk), Pukkelpop (be), Rock Werchter (be), Roskilde Festival (dk), Sziget (hu), and Ypsigrock Festival (it).
The immediate results are expected to be just the tip of the iceberg, with many European festivals announcing their line-ups in the coming months. Follow the live results of this year’s ESNS Exchange acts at esns-exchange.eu with the full charts available at ESNS Radar at radar.esns.nl/bookings-artist-chart
Stamp of quality
Entering the 21st year of ESNS Exchange, 280 new European acts showcased their talents to around 40,000 enthusiastic music fans and professionals this January at ESNS24, automatically enrolling them in the European Talent Exchange programme. The ESNS 2024 line-up traditionally books acts from across the continent, offering a broad and proportionate programme. This means that artists from countries somewhat under-represented in the European music industry are also included.
ESNS Exchange, co-funded by the European Union's Creative Europe programme, facilitates the booking of European acts at festivals outside their home countries and works with the EBU, Yourope export offices and local media to generate significant media exposure for these artists. In this way, ESNS Exchange aims to boost the international careers of European artists.
For many music professionals, a successful show at ESNS serves as a stamp of quality. Festivals and export offices participating in ESNS Exchange praise the programme for creating opportunities for European acts across Europe as well as on the global level:
Helen Sildna, Founder of Shiftworks Company and Tallinn Music Week: “ESNS Exchange is an important building-block of TMW’s music programme, offering an opportunity to book the most exciting talent that Europe has on offer in a given year. ESNS programme choices provide a high-quality guarantee that is valued by promoters, also reflecting the wide geographical diversity of the EU and giving a spotlight to artists that otherwise might not end up on bookers' radars. The combination of high-standard pre-selection and a support mechanism, helping to cover part of the costs - is a smart incentive to make sure fresh European talent has more opportunities to break borders and enhance their international careers. We hope the programme can continue - it’s a smart tool for both the artist and the bookers.”
Márk Bóna, booker at Sziget festival: “It's very nice that when we start to make a deal [with an artist], we can see them live [at Eurosonic] or meet with their agent and maybe they have more bands they can propose, so [being part of ESNS Exchange] helps a lot.”
Corinne Sadki, President of EMEE - European Music Exporters Exchange President, Director of European Affairs and international development at Centre National de la Musique: “The [ESNS] Exchange programme is, for each European export initiative member of EMEE (and beyond), a key tool to boost the discoverability of European emerging artists in prescriber festivals all around the world. The financial incentive system is crucial to multiply European emerging artists' live presence and is really a huge help in our daily work at EMEE in supporting the international development of European artists, opening new global live opportunities for artists.”
Franz Hergovich, Project Leader MICA – Music Austria: “ESNS Exchange, the European Talent Exchange, is highly important for Austrian acts because it combines visibility towards a lot of the main international multipliers with capacity building actions in a clever way, thereby producing a real chance for a step further in musician’s careers.”
Andraž Kajzer, Artistic Director and Festival Manager at MENT Ljubljana: “Making circulation of new European artists on festivals easier. That's what it is all about. ESNS Exchange is an important pillar for new talent supporting our cause and making it viable.”
More than two decades of supporting talented artists
To date, ESNS Exchange, together with the amazing support of partners, export offices, Yourope and the EBU, has supported 2,159 European artists hailing from 37 countries, enabling them to perform at an impressive tally of 5,336 shows across 192 partner festivals in 44 countries.
ESNS Exchange stood at the base of numerous successful careers such as Editors, Blood Red Shoes, The XX, Iceage, Anna Calvi, Katzenjammer, AURORA, Kae Tempest, Phoenix, Shame, Buraka Som Sistema, Fontaines D.C., Sigrid, Flohio, Marina Satti & Fonés, Altin Gün, Priya Ragu, The Haunted Youth, Deki Alem, Tramhaus, Alyona Alyona, Go_A, Uche Yara and many more.
The full charts, including a line-up archive of over 130 Exchange partner festivals counting ESNS Exchange alumni and the rest of the bookings, are available at ESNS Radar at radar.esns.nl/bookings-artist-chart
Applications for the 2025 edition—for all European artists—will open on May 1st via ESNS.nl.

Green Events & Innovations Conference 16 A Sell Out Success
The Green Events & Innovations Conference (GEI), the foremost conference for sustainable events, welcomed 400 delegates to the Royal Lancaster London for the event’s 16th edition on 27th February.
AGF CEO Claire O'Neill and Director Teresa Moore started the day's proceedings by highlighting that we’re reaching critical mass structurally and culturally in which we must change the way our sector operates and that using our platform for communication has never been more important in a year of pivotal elections worldwide. This was followed by a packed agenda of inspirational innovators from the global live music, sports, and event sector, tackling critical sustainability topics with speakers who brought their knowledge, insight, and passion to the panels and conversations.
The first session of the day covered Extreme Weather Events, exploring the current situation with a presentation from climate scientist Professor Richard Betts from the Met Office and University of Exeter, who said, “We are seeing spring coming earlier and summers are hotter and winter is later and wetter, so thinking about the timing of events in the future should be taken into consideration,” with Safety & Security Consultant Alexandra von Samson adding, “We have to adapt to the situation as it's not going to go away.”
The Sponsored by Oil and Gas session tackled sponsorship and greenwashing with Luke Howell (Hope Solutions) sustainability advisor to Coldplay and Glastonbury Festival stating that “Oil and gas companies are aware that the music industry has been struggling and are seeking to take advantage.”
The World’s First Carbon-Removed Gig - The 1975 @ at The O2 Arena with AEG’s John Langford and Sam Booth looked at AGF and carbon-removal experts CUR8’s pilot event - a game-changing step on the path to helping the global live events industry reach genuine net-zero. AEG’s Sam Booth stated that “there is a need to convince artists and bands to come on this journey with us and get on board with it and to open up conversations that wouldn’t normally be had.”
Popstars, sports personalities, and music industry moguls were in the spotlight in Bridging The Gap, Proud To Pay More with Julia Davies (Patriotic Millionaires UK) explaining how the event and entertainment industry is in a prime position to make a difference and stand up for a better future for us all.
The Quick-Fire Innovation Round saw unique and innovative sustainability ideas presented, including: ChefChain blockchain for food traceability, ReClaim Audio recycled speakers, FibreStrap biodegradable cable ties, Take The Jump innovative communication strategy to cut through behaviour change messages, and Fluctuations the transnational boat festival wandering European rivers, to mobilise on social, environmental, and citizenship topics.
Continuing to look at global affairs impacting the live sector Ellie Kinney (The Conflict and Environment Observatory) challenged the idea of the environment as a ‘silent victim of armed conflict in ‘The Military Emissions Gap’ stating that ‘If the world’s militaries were a country it would have the fourth highest carbon footprint' and in ‘Influencing Audiences Beyond the Festival’, Dr Teresa Moore and Green Gathering’s Em Weirdigan explored the influence of green festivals towards audiences beyond the event discussing research undertaken by The Green Gathering in association with A Greener Future with Em Weirdigan highlighting “40% people are there because they believe in our ethos and feel they’ve found something meaningful with us’.
The agenda also tackled the structures on which the live sector depends including artist contract clauses with a session hosted by Head of Sustainability for EMEA at Live Nation Patricia Yagüe (Live Nation) with LIVE Green Chair Carol Scott (TAIT), Tom Schroeder (Wasserman Music) and Ross Patel (Whole Entertainment /Music Managers Forum) in ‘Contracts for Climate’. In this essential discussion, Ross Patel said “Artists with significant leverage are starting to use their power to drive their own sustainable goals” with Tom Schroeder adding “What we need is not just Billie Eilish doing her thing, we need it to be accepted as part of the ecosystem and not to be the exception but the rule” and that “more efficient touring and scaled-down production, lead to a less carbon footprint and more income so everyone wins.’
This year’s research sessions included the launch of new toolkit ‘No Climate Action Without Us. How to include disabled people in live event sustainability’. A joint project with Attitude is Everything A Greener Future and Julie’s Bicycle with Farah Ahmed (Julie’s Bicycle) and Dr Teresa Moore (A Greener Future) presenting followed by a panel with Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets), Tori Tsui (Climate Activist) and Harry Jones (Forwards Festival) hosted by Feimatta Conteh (Arts Council England). Three case studies from Forwards Festival, Green Man, and Shambala were also examined. In this powerful and thought-provoking session, Blaine Harrison said “Feeling connected to nature makes us feel more incentivised to fight to protect it”
It’s not possible to consider green events without considering the stage. ‘Greening The Stage’, hosted by John Robb (Louder Than War) with Carol Scott (TAIT), Pauline Bourdon (Team Love/Soliphilia) and Zarya Vrabcheva (STUFISH Entertainment Architects) discussed what they have in our toolbox today to design stages that mitigate the use of virgin materials, reduce emissions, and start working to the circular economy. Carol Scott stated “Solving the key fundamental problems is having more lead time. The biggest problem is the lack of decision-making at the front end”.
After a delicious climate-loving plant-based lunch including sliders courtesy of Devil’s Kitchen, Dale Vince (Ecotricity / Forest Green Rovers FC) took centre stage hosting two sessions, First ‘Low Emission Festivals & Events’ highlighted that still more than 85% of festival energy in the UK was coming from generators and this needs to move to grid, battery, hybrid and other fuel mixes in the near future. Andy Hibberd (Ecotricity / Grid Faeries) highlighted “Without data you can’t make informed choices”. Second was ‘Avengers Assemble: Using Profile for Change’ with Sam Lee, Music Declares Emergency’s Fay Milton, and Louis V, in which Vince highlighted “this is the most important year of our lifetimes” in terms of elections, and called for the industry to get behind the #JustVote24 campaign.
AEME (Association of Event Management Educators) returned to GEI bringing together a panel of academics to discuss the demand for sustainability skills across the industry in 'Supporting sustainable employability skills’ for current and future generations of festival and events managers and Rapper, multi-instrumentalist and activist Louis VI joined GEI for the first time to give an inspiring keynote speech ‘Nature Ain’t A Luxury’ where asked the question “Why aren't we defending the music of nature like we are defending our creative expression and songwriter splits?”
A series of thought provoking presentations also took place during the day including ‘Sisyphean Or Herculean? The Task Ahead For Decarbonising Transport’ from Glenn Lyons (Mott McDonald/University of West England), ‘Chasing Waste Management Gremlins’ from Clive Philips (Greenbox Events Ltd) and ‘Carbon Impact Of Festivals: AGF Annual Report’ from Alex Fintoni (A Greener Future).
The highly anticipated ‘EarthPercent Hour’, was the finale of the day's programme and featured a Keynote conversation with Brian Eno, hosted by EarthPercent’s executive director, Cathy Runciman with Brian, followed by Jarvis Cocker taking to the stage to present his "Biophobia", which was both thought-provoking and entertaining and a huge treat for attendees.
The day rounded up with the International AGF Awards 2024 sponsored by the incredible SkyDiamond with 27 events, venues, and innovators from 12 countries as finalists with the The top accolade - the International Greener Festival Award 2024 - going to Belgium’s Paradise City, who also scooped the Greener Catering Award. Louis VI also gave an interactive performance engaging the crowd in
Said Dale Vince Founder of SkyDiamond: “Sky diamonds are made from the sky. It’s 21st century alchemy. We don’t have to give up the things we enjoy we just need to do them differently, and that’s what GEI and AGF is all about so this was a natural alignment, and well deserved by the winners.”

Michael Kill, NTIA CEO Says:
“This report invites you to embark on a journey through the pulsating heart of the UK electronic music scene. From the pioneers who laid the groundwork to the emerging talents shaping its future, each note, each beat, is a testament to the enduring cultural value of electronic music in the United Kingdom. As we navigate the vibrant landscape of sound and culture, let us celebrate the resilience, talent and sense of community that define this extraordinary musical movement.”
“What truly sets the UK electronic music scene apart is its sense of community. Beyond the pulsating beats and infectious melodies lies a collective spirit that unites individuals from diverse backgrounds. This community transcends borders, bringing together people who share a passion for the transformative power of electronic music. It is a space where differences are celebrated, and the universal language of beats and rhythms creates a sense of belonging that knows no bounds.”
David Boyle Audience Strategies:
“Electronic music might seem like just another genre (or worse!). But this research shows it is SO MUCH more. It is a thriving community, a sizeable economic contributor, and a hotbed of creativity and innovation. Electronic music is story of resilience, diversity, and richness that rivals any other cultural force. It energises spirits, unites diverse communities, and pushes creative boundaries. Its impact permeates boardrooms and pop charts, movie studios and fashion houses, high streets and homes. But the report shows it is also an industry at a crossroads, facing immense challenges … yet, fortunately, equipped with the ingenuity and passion to innovate.”
Maria May, Head of Electronic Music/Senior Agent CAA:
“Electronic music continues to be a driving force globally, and the UK has played a pivotal role in its development. The report explores the economic and cultural impact of electronic music, highlighting its contributions to job creation, tourism, and community well-being.”
“It also sheds light on the challenges faced by the industry, providing insights for future growth. As we continue to champion electronic music's potential, this report serves as a powerful tool for collaboration, innovation, and advocacy. In order to continue to grow we need to support each other and the culture of dance music. .Together, let us propel electronic music to new heights in the UK and beyond.”
Sacha Lord is the Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester and co-creator of the Parklife festival and The Warehouse Project:
“As an ardent advocate for the electronic music genre, I am compelled to delve into the profound impact it has had on the cultural landscape of the United Kingdom. Electronic music is not merely a collection of beats and melodies; it is an immersive journey that transcends boundaries, weaving itself into the fabric of our society and leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals.”
“Electronic music is not just a genre; it is a cultural phenomenon that has woven itself into the very fabric of the UK's music scene. Warehouse Project and Parklife festival, as torchbearers of this sonic revolution, exemplify the genre's ability to captivate, inspire, and unite. As we celebrate the undeniable success of these events, let us also recognise the enduring value of electronic music in shaping the collective narrative of our society.”
Carly Heath is the Night Time Economy Advisor for Bristol
“Dancing as a community is a joyful human tradition, as old as time. Anyone who regularly seeks the skin-tingling sensation of dancing in front of a sound system will understand the value of electronic music to their lives. Nothing matches those moments of bodies in motion, palms and arms in the air, repetitive beats moving dancing feet."
“Dance spaces are community places. They are a unique feature as ‘beacons of joy’ on our high streets. Clubs are a unifying public place to explore identity, connect through culture, and reset bodies and minds at the end of a stressful week. Dance spaces deserve celebration for their significant contribution to British Culture, yet the financial support and public funding for our culture is woefully inadequate. I’m hopeful that future generations will recognise club culture as a British cultural institution. The government should better support the scenes of today to create the legendary artists of the future.”
Wez Saunders, CEO & Co-Owner, Defected Records:
“Electronic music holds significant importance in the UK, serving as a cultural, economic, and social pillar. It has been instrumental in shaping the UK's nightlife and music scene, contributing significantly to the economy through festivals, clubs, and music sales. Electronic music has fostered community and identity among fans, promoting inclusivity and innovation. Its global appeal has also enhanced the UK's international reputation as a leader in music production and live events, making it a key player in the worldwide music industry.”
“This comprehensive report, spearheaded by Michael Kill and the NTIA and crafted by David Boyle of Audience Strategies, delves into the significant economic and cultural footprint of the UK's electronic music industry. It assesses the genre's impact on the national economy, community well-being, and cultural landscape, exploring its popularity from grassroots venues to global stages. The document identifies challenges, proposing strategies for sector support, providing further understanding of the sector to the Government aiming to illuminate the industry's value, advocate for educational and infrastructural development, and foster a more inclusive and supported electronic music community.”
While the primary aim is to highlight the electronic music industry's value, underline its importance, and pinpoint both the challenges it faces and the opportunities it offers, the report also highlights the need for funding mechanisms for artists and DJs and bolster support for grassroots venues and promoters, the role of education in securing the industry's future, the effects of gentrification, licensing, and zoning on the sector and the unique role of electronic music nightclubs in cultivating community, inclusivity, and tolerance.
Electronic music continues to electrify the UK's cultural and economic landscape, albeit with nuanced shifts in its trajectory over the last year. The genre's increasing popularity, as evidenced by its leading presence in festival line-ups and its substantial share of the UK singles revenue, speaks to its enduring appeal and its role in enriching the UK's cultural landscape. The shift towards smaller, more intimate festival experiences and the notable increase in festival attendance highlights a community seeking meaningful connections through music. Furthermore, the global influence of UK electronic music, illustrated by artists like Calvin Harris commanding significant international airplay, reinforces the UK's influential position on the world stage.
However, the industry faces challenges, marked by a 6% decrease in its total measurable economic impact, now calculated to be £2.5 billion. Since the start of the pandemic, 396 nightclubs, or 32%, have been lost. In the last year alone, we lost 31 nightclubs (4%), and nightclub visits for electronic music saw a 9% decrease, reflecting broader trends affecting nightlife and social spaces which underscores the pressing need for strategic interventions to preserve and promote these vital cultural arenas.
Despite these hurdles, the report reveals a resilient and vibrant community, with 97 million nights out enjoyed based on electronic music over the last 12 months. The engagement with electronic music also extends beyond mere listening, profoundly impacting social connections, community building, and individual well-being. The fan survey highlights the genre's role as a vital catalyst for inclusivity and mental health benefits, with 80% of respondents experiencing emotional and mental health improvements through dance and electronic music events. These gatherings are not just entertainment venues but community hubs, where 75% of attendees feel a sense of belonging, underscoring the genre's ability to foster strong social bonds and ability to promote wellbeing and enhance community cohesion. The genre's events are celebrated for promoting diversity, inclusivity and serving as hubs for creativity and community building. Notably, 98% of clubbers feel safe in club environments, indicating the significance of these spaces beyond mere entertainment.
In conclusion, while facing economic contractions and challenges in maintaining physical spaces for music, the UK's electronic music scene continues to thrive culturally, fostering a strong sense of community and innovation. Electronic music continues to be a pivotal force in the UK, shaping not only the economy but also the cultural and social fabric of the nation.
Addressing the challenges facing the sector requires a multifaceted approach, including easing regulatory pressures, enhancing financial support mechanisms, and championing the UK as a prime destination for electronic music. Encouraging community engagement, bolstering electronic music education, and tackling issues of gentrification and redevelopment are crucial steps towards sustaining the industry's growth and vibrancy. The path forward for electronic music in the UK is not without obstacles, but with concerted effort and strategic support, its future remains as promising and impactful as ever.
The report was commissioned by the NTIA and written by David Boyle of Audience Strategies, an agency that uses data to help artists and brands to understand their audiences and trends.
