NTIA Posts Grim Warning: UK Clubs Will be Extinct After Last Night Out on 31.12.2029
Today, the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) issued a grave warning to the public: the UK’s vibrant nightclub scene, once the heartbeat of our cities and communities, is on the brink of extinction. We have lost 37% of Clubs since March 2020, 3 nightclubs per week, over 150 per year! If the current rate of club closures continues, December 31, 2029, will mark the end of an era—The Last Night Out, as we know it, before nightclubs vanish completely from our cultural landscape.
This week, the Night Time Industries Associate (NTIA) launched The Last Night Out, a campaign created by McCann London to highlight the continued plight of the night-time economy. Based on recent data, with 10 UK clubs closing every month, we face losing all major UK nightclubs by the decade's end. The Last Night Out highlights this date in true nightclub fashion by announcing it as the final event of all nightclub culture.
McCann London’s campaign, a world of nightclub poster design, aims to raise awareness of continued nightclub closures whilst driving people through to a petition challenging the recently-elected Labour government to launch a Heritage Protection scheme, granting nightclubs targeted financial support and heritage clubs like Fabric, Ministry of Sound & SubClub culturally protected status.
Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, expressed deep concern: "We are witnessing the systematic dismantling of the night-time economy. Our industry is not just about entertainment; it’s about identity, community, and the economy. Losing our clubs means losing jobs, culture, and a vital part of the UK’s social fabric. Without urgent intervention, December 31, 2029, will be the last night out and the end of a clubbing era that has defined generations."
Sacha Lord, Night Time Economy Advisor for Greater Manchester, echoed this sentiment, adding, "The night-time economy has been an integral part of our cultural and economic history. It's more than just a night out; it's where friendships are forged, creativity flourishes, and local economies thrive. The current trajectory spells disaster not only for the businesses themselves but for the communities they serve. We cannot afford to lose these spaces—they are the lifeblood of our cities."
Adam Taylor-Smith and Stephen Yeates, Senior Creatives at McCann London, said, “We’ve just waved goodbye to a government that seemed to have little time for culture and the arts, so we’re hoping the newly elected one will have much more. Night clubs are more than sound systems and wristbands. They’re vital organisations that provide careers, create friendships, inspire generations of artists, and truly give people a place to celebrate their eclecticism as one after-dark family. This work is a bittersweet celebration of the Night Club community and a warning that that community might fracture sooner than we think”.
The devastating impact of prolonged economic challenges, increasing regulatory pressures, and a lack of meaningful support has driven thousands of businesses into insolvency. Once-thriving hubs of creativity, social connection, and cultural expression are disappearing at an alarming rate, leaving a gaping void in our society.
In light of this impending crisis, the NTIA is making critical demands from the government:
- Continuation of Support for the Sector: The night-time economy requires sustained and meaningful financial support to weather the ongoing economic storm within the budget, starting with extending business rates relief beyond April 2025. Temporary relief measures are no longer sufficient; the sector needs long-term strategies to stabilise and foster growth.
- Recognition of Nightclubs & Venues as Cultural Institutions: Venues such as Fabric, SubClub, and Ministry of Sound are not mere entertainment spaces—they are cultural landmarks. The NTIA calls for these iconic clubs and others like them to be recognised as National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs) on par with galleries and museums. These venues deserve the same considerations, protections, and funding as other cultural institutions, acknowledging their crucial role in the UK’s cultural heritage.
- Policy Reform and Regulatory Support: The government must urgently review policies and regulations that disproportionately impact night-time venues. This includes revisiting licensing laws, business rates, VAT, and planning policies to create a more supportive environment for the industry.
The NTIA calls upon the government, local authorities, and the public to recognise the urgency of this situation. The loss of these businesses is not just a commercial failure but a cultural tragedy. The time for action is now—before the lights go out on the UK’s nightlife for good.
Notes to Editors:
The campaign was created by McCann London’s senior creatives, Adam Taylor-Smith and Stephen Yeates, with design directed by Kerry Roper and Lisa Carrana, Head of Design.

The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) is thrilled to announce that the Night Time Economy Summit 2025 will take place in Birmingham at Hockley Social Club from Wednesday, February 5, to Friday, February 6, 2025. This year's summit is held in collaboration with a diverse range of partners, including the West Midlands Combined Authority, shesaid.so, Earth Percent, Skiddle, ACS, Institute of Hospitality, GigPig, Defected and VibeLab plus many more.
This year's summit, in partnership with the International Nightlife Association, will feature representatives from across Europe, Japan, the U.S., Canada, South America, and Australia. The event will foster exciting new partnerships both domestically and internationally, elevating the summit's offerings to new heights. It will include dedicated stages for international speakers, hosted by VibeLab, and platforms aimed at expanding the cultural footprint of the Night Time Economy. Key themes will include queer spaces, sustainability, placemaking, well-being, security, theatre, cinema, comedy, live and electronic music, and more.
Among the most anticipated additions is a full Queer stage, developed in partnership with Gay Times and Stonewall, which will address challenges surrounding diversity and inclusion. Earth Percent and AGF will lead crucial discussions on sustainability, with each admission contributing to the work Earth Percent is doing to advance the UKs sustainability efforts in the nightlife sector.
The summit will kick off with the *shesaid.so* Brunch, a celebrated event featuring a very special keynote speaker, offering early insights into equality within the industry and key trends. This year's summit will deliver insights from key influencers and artists across the West Midlands, celebrating the region's rich and diverse cultural tapestry, coupled with some of the amazing work being done in London around Black Lives In Music in the plight to end the discrimination in music, while GigPig will explore the live and electronic grassroots music challenges and why supporting homegrown talent is more essential than ever.
We are proud to officially launch the Listen for Life Campaign at the summit next year, a groundbreaking initiative in hearing conservation supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). This campaign introduces our new Charter and Training Program, designed to set global standards for hearing conservation in entertainment venues. By prioritising safe listening environments, we aim to protect staff and patrons' hearing health while promoting sustainable nightlife. Together, with industry leaders and WHO, we are raising awareness, implementing best practices, and safeguarding auditory wellness for future generations.
Electronic music will be delivered by the formidable voice of Defected, with additional label partners Hospital Records, and other key players leading discussions on the value of this genre within the Night Time Economy. A benchmark report on the contribution of electronic music will be unveiled, providing critical insights into its economic impact.
The Summit emphasises the critical role of collaboration, bringing together over 30 trade associations to shape the future of the sector. Key partners like BBPA, Institute of Hospitality, UKHospitality, UK Cinema Association, UK Crowd Management Association, IPSA, and the Live Comedy Association, alongside many others, will unite to share insights, address challenges, and drive innovation. Their combined expertise ensures a holistic approach, fostering a stronger, more resilient night-time economy through partnership and shared commitment.
Following the overwhelming success of last year’s Mayoral panel, we are excited to welcome back key representatives from the region to discuss their ongoing work and the vital role nightlife plays in our local economy, hosted by Richard Parker, Mayor of West Midlands. This year’s Night Time Economy Summit will feature an engaging lineup of regional mayors and political leaders, showcasing their commitment to supporting nightlife as an essential part of our communities. With nightlife serving as a driving force for culture, tourism, and employment, this discussion will highlight the critical efforts being made to ensure its continued growth and sustainability.
Michael Kill, CEO of NTIA and VP of the International Nightlife Association, expressed his excitement about the upcoming 2025 Night Time Economy Summit, which will take place in Birmingham.
"We are excited to reveal that next year’s summit promises to be one of our most diverse events yet, with dynamic insights that will resonate throughout the industry. This gathering will unite influential voices to discuss a variety of important topics, addressing both long-term objectives and immediate challenges."
"What truly sets this event apart is its commitment to accessibility, ensuring that everyone can take part. It’s about fostering knowledge and expanding networks while providing attendees the chance to assess the current state of the industry. This will enable us to reflect, debate, and exchange ideas and best practices aimed at creating a safer and more successful night-time economy for the future."
Richard Parker , Mayor of West Midlands and Chair of the WMCA said:
"Our night-time economy is a key part of what makes the West Midlands a vibrant place to live and visit, employing nearly 100,000 people. From world-renowned music scenes to top-tier food and entertainment, our nightlife is central to the region's appeal.
“As we navigate the challenges this industry has faced in recent years, I want to support our high streets and the people who bring them to life. Hosting this conference here highlights our commitment to growing this vital sector and showcasing the best of our region.
Sacha Lord - Chair of the NTIA and Night Time Economy Advisor to Greater Manchester
“We were proud to have hosted the Night Time Economy Summit in Greater Manchester in 2024. Last year's event saw record breaking attendance from a wide range of operators, suppliers and policy-makers from across the sector and the discussions which took place were critical to ensuring its future direction.
“I'm incredibly thrilled to see that the next Summit will be taking place in Birmingham, an area which, like Greater Manchester, is experiencing rapid growth. Our two city regions understand the importance of a thriving night time economy and Birmingham has taken many steps to secure its future. With representatives and Mayors coming together from all over the UK and further afield, the summit will be one of the most important events on our sector's calender an dI look forward to meeting everyone there.”
Lyle Bignon - Night Time Economy Ambassador for Birmingham
“The role of Birmingham and the West Midlands in the UK’s arts, culture, hospitality, music, and NTE offer - both to domestic and international markets - has long been underplayed.
“In recent years, the self-deprecating Birmingham character has given way to a new found civic and cultural pride across our region, driven by creativity, community and innovation.
“Nowhere is this more evident than in our Night Time Economy, home to some of the most exciting and pioneering businesses and leaders in Europe.
“We look forward to welcoming professionals from across the world to our city, and showing off the people and places who make the West Midlands a truly dynamic NTE destination.”
The Night Time Economy Summit being a satellite conference that travels to a new city or regions each year is vital for celebrating and supporting the UK's diverse nightlife industry. By moving to different locations, the summit shines a spotlight on the unique cultural and economic contributions of local nightlife scenes, ensuring recognition for their creativity, vibrancy, and impact. This traveling format fosters greater collaboration between industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, building stronger networks across regions. It also offers cities an opportunity to showcase their nighttime offerings, attracting investment and tourism, and driving innovation, which ultimately strengthens the sector nationwide.
The annual UK Benchmark Reports on Night Time Economy & Electronic Music will also be released at the summit, with expert panelists discussing the current impacts and the true economic, community and cultural value within the current UK marketplace.
The full programme for the Night Time Economy Summit and venue will be released over the coming months, with speakers and panelists approaching a huge range of topics from Politics, Business, New Government, Comedy, Diversity, Harm Reduction, Drug Testing, Electronic & Live Music, Safeguarding, Women's Safety, Health, Well Being, Access to Funding, Grass Roots Music, Placemaking, Events & Festivals, Security, Cinema, Gambling, Licensing & Planning, Supply Chain Energy, Cost of Living Crisis, Reports, Research, Technology, Mental Health, Live Music, Grass Roots Music, Events plus much much more.

Dancefloor Devastation: 65 Nightclubs Already Closed in 2024 as Crisis Intensifies, Reports NTIA
The latest statistics from CGA Neilson reveal a devastating decline in the number of nightclubs across the UK, with staggering closures that underscore the urgent need for support and intervention.
Between June 2020 and June 2024, the UK lost 480 nightclubs, averaging 10 closures per month—or 2 per week. Alarmingly, the pace of closures has increased in 2024. Between December 2023 and June 2024, 65 nightclubs shut down, equating to 11 closures per month—or 3 per week. This rise in closures is devastating the UK’s late-night economy, particularly the dance music spaces that are the lifeblood of the scene.
Over the past four years these vital spaces, which are essential to the UK’s globally renowned dance music culture have been disappearing at an alarming rate, jeopardising not only jobs but the very heart of nightlife and culture in communities across the country.
The numbers are alarming:
- Central Region: From 200 nightclubs in 2020, only 118 remain in 2024, marking a catastrophic loss of 41%.
- East: A decline from 67 to 41 venues, representing a 39% reduction.
- Lancashire: Once home to 178 dance floors, only 104 survive, a 42% decrease.
- London: The vibrant heart of dance music has seen its dance floors reduced from 200 to just 143, down 29%.
- North East: A decrease from 61 to 49 venues, equating to a 20% decline.
- Scotland: From 125 venues to 83, a troubling 34% drop.
- South & South East: A reduction from 92 to 70 venues, down 24%.
- South West: The number of nightclubs has halved, from 111 to 64—a staggering 42% loss.
- Wales: From 66 to 39 venues, reflecting a grim 41% decline.
- Yorkshire: The hardest hit, with a loss from 132 to just 73 venues—a shocking 45% reduction.
Regional Disparities and Cultural Impact
The impact on northern regions is particularly severe. Yorkshire's 45% reduction and Lancashire's 42% decline illustrate the steep cultural and economic toll on these communities. In contrast, London, while also affected, shows a smaller reduction of 29%, reflecting the capital's stronger economic base.
However, this doesn't diminish the growing risk to the capital's iconic nightlife culture.
Devolved regions like Scotland and Wales have also seen significant setbacks, with 34% and 41% reductions respectively, raising concerns over the sustainability of dance music culture in areas that rely on these venues for their local identity and economic activity.
Call for Immediate Government Action
The closure of nightclubs reflects a broader crisis in the UK’s night time cultural economy. The Night Time Industries Association urges the Chancellor to extend business rates relief in the coming Autumn budget to ease the financial burden on venues and ensure the survival of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and cultural spaces that support nightlife culture. Further, the government must recognise the importance of supporting creative spaces beyond traditional bricks-and-mortar businesses, including pop-up events, music festivals, and other cultural initiatives that contribute to local economies.
Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, said:
“The nightclub and dance music sector is facing an unprecedented crisis. Since June 2020, we’ve been losing two nightclubs every week, but in the last six months, this has escalated to three per week. This rapid decline is devastating for our economy, culture, and communities.
Despite contributing millions in taxes, we are burdened with rising costs and a lack of essential public services. Late-night transport is unreliable, police presence is scarce, and venues are forced to spend on security and cleaning—services that should be publicly provided. Additionally, bureaucratic systems around licensing and planning are inconsistent and definitely not conducive to growth, weighing us down at every point.
Our sector is treated like an afterthought, yet it supports jobs, tourism, and hospitality. These venues aren’t just places to dance; they are vital spaces for community and creativity. Without urgent government intervention, we risk losing a key part of the UK's cultural identity in dance music. We need immediate action to prevent further closures. Long-term reform won't matter if there are no venues left to benefit from it.”
While long-term reform is welcome, it will come too late for many businesses unless immediate support is provided to reverse the accelerating closure rate. The UK's nightclubs are irreplaceable, and urgent intervention is needed to ensure they remain a vibrant part of our cultural identity.
Add that despite going millions in tax, and being somewhat weighed down at every point, also include bureaucratic systems around licensing and planning are inconsistent and are definitely not conducive to growth.
