Over 90 different radio shows broadcasting 456 hours of radio from 21 different countries
Taking place from 21st August to 7th September in Zurich, the 5th edition of the International Radio Festival (IRF) once again united radio stations from around the world and showcased some of the best music programmes and formats available today, broadcasting them LIVE ON-AIR on FM across Zurich, Online around the world, and on the participating guest radio stations back home. Broadcasting live from the infamous Kaufleuten, the IRF, featured over 90 different radio shows broadcasting 456 hours of radio from 21 different countries to an audience of many millions, offering those tuned-in the rare opportunity to “Listen to how the World Sounds”. Swiss Radio Day
This year’s event also incorporated the Swiss Radio Day for the first time, attracting a record 400 plus delegates including the director general of SRG/SRF Roger de Weck, Laura-May Coope, Social Media Manager BBC Radio 1, and Herbert Visser, owner of 100% FM & 10NL in The Netherlands. Swiss radio stations taking part included; Switzerland’s number one station Radio24 Zurich, SRF Radio Virus, Radio GRRIF, Radio Fiume Ticino and Radio 105.
IRF Competition Winners
As well as the showcasing radio stations from around the world, the IRF is also ran several competitions worldwide to find the best radio talent to broadcast their music radio show ‘live on air’ at the event.
First up was the 3rd ‘Sound of India’ contest winner “MyFM”, organised by Radioandmusic.com together with The International Radio Festival and Mixcloud.com. RJ Meenakshi emerged as the winner in a competition, which had over 100 entries from more than 70 private and public FM radio stations all over India. The bubbly Meenakshi hosts the morning show ‘Salaam Chandigarh’ on 94.3 MY FM from 7 to 11am, which starts with a motivational story, followed by national, international, sports and Bollywood updates with funny entertaining takes and trivia.
Alex Calder Spinelli was the winner of the IRF ‘Best US/Canada Campus Radio Contest’ with his Thursday evening show on WSPN ‘Recess: with Spinelli’. WSPN is one few college radio stations in the US solely made and run by students. The station being on air 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, playing primarily Alternative Rock, is not only available on the campus of Skidmore College, but is also extremely popular among citizens of Saratoga Springs, New York. Together with their partners iBiquity Digital, CMJ and Mixcloud IRF welcomed Alex to Zurich to showcase his talent to a worldwide audience.
Mixcloud also joined forces with the IRF to launch the inaugural ‘Online Radio Awards 2014’ with the objective of recognising outstanding curatorship, production and creative talent within the online radio industry. With over 14,000 entries from all over the world, 60 Radio Shows and 25 Radio Stations were shortlisted and passed on to a panel of industry judges which included Tony Prince (DMC), Brad Wete (Billboard), Karen Pearson (Folded Wing) and Phil Catchpole (British Council). Over 20,000 votes were recorded and the overall winners for ‘Best Online Radio Station’ and ‘radio show’ were NTS Radio and Solid Steel respectively, who won the opportunity to broadcast live during the International Radio Festival. IRF Parties The IRF also presented three special parties which were broadcast live on-air around the world. On Thursday night Radio Sonica Ibiza took to the decks at Zukunft Club, DJ Premier joined KissFM Berlin at the Kaufleuten Club on Friday night with IRF’s own Gabby Sanderson & DJ Dan bringing Propaganda the UK’s biggest alternative clubnight to Zurich with XFM at Kaufleuten Festsaal
IRF Parties
No event is complete without a party and this year the IRF presented three special parties which were broadcast live on-air around the world. On Thursday night Radio Sonica Ibiza took to the decks at Zukunft Club, DJ Premier joined KissFM Berlin at the Kaufleuten Club on Friday night with IRF’s own Gabby Sanderson & DJ Dan bringing Propaganda the UK’s biggest alternative clubnight to Zurich with XFM at Kaufleuten Festsaal.
