If you need a helping hand to decide what acts to check out at this years OFF Festival, check out the top picks from Ride, Young Fathers, Xiu Xiu, Colleen Green and more!

YOUNG FATHERS ARTIST PICKS

  • Golden Teacher we sang with Cassie (one of the two singers) with the William Onyebear show last year and she’s special. The group are rave clash with Krautrock clash with Silver Apples clash with funk…
  • Huun Huur Tu Persian four John Cales without Lou and co and with his old grandad singing about a girl he knew once, in Hamburg port, many years ago.
  • Mick Harvey doing Serge Gainsbourg he’s got to be verrrrry careful…
  • Ogoya Nengo & The Dodo Women’s Group just to see women of all ages being magnificent on stage.
  • Patti Smith a chance to see her doing an album that opened the door to female artists all the women who take the stage wanting to be more like Little Richard and Keith Richard rather than tits and nipples for ogling owe her.
  • Run The Jewels cos these guys are diamond geezers.
  •  Son Lux because he made a bona fide twenty teen classic with Easy which sounds immense live.
  • Sun Ra Arkestra Jerry Dammers V Sun Ra sounds like a wet dream. Does it work? We want to find out.BUFFALO DAUGHTER ARTIST PICKS

Sun Ra Archestra The legend! We just cannot miss and you know why.

  • The Residents Another legend!
  • Arto Lindsay Our bass player Yumiko just joined his Japan tour this June. He’s our musical hero and also a good old friend.
  • The Julie Ruin: ○ suGar says “We’ve been looking forward to Kathleen’s new band. I already bought their limited running tshirt!” ○ Yumiko says “I love Kathleen’s music and lyrics since Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. She is our living punk rock star. Looking forward to seeing her new project.”
  • Patti Smith Omg, too many legends on this year’s lineups. This is MUST see.
  • Sutari Ond of the greatest things to be a part of Off Festival is to discover music we’ve never got across. Traditional Polish folk music sounds very intriguing. We don’t want to miss it.
  • Xiu Xiu Plays Twin Peaks Our influence from Twin Peaks is too huge to explain. Looking forward to how they come up.
  • Ztota Jesien Looking forward to the noise rock quartette from Warsaw
  • The Dillinger Escape Plan They will rock our heads out.
Sunn O))) It would be great to let ourselves melt into the wall of loud yet ambient noise sound.RIDE ARTIST PICKS
  • Andy: Really looking forward to OFF Festival. There are some bands I don’t want to miss: Sun O))) / Sun Kil Moon / Peaking Lights. It will also be great to check out Patti Smith doing horses, as I didn’t get the chance to check her out at Field Day. I will definitely try and check out the Sun Ra Orchestra. I’m also interested to hear Mick Harvey interpret the work of Serge Gainsbourg. Should be a great festival.
  • Steve: I will be making my way to see Susanne Sundfør for some wonderfully moving vocals and retro synth-ness (A Night at Salle Pleyel). My life will improve 100% if Susanne performs both White Foxes and Running to the Sea.
  • Loz: The first record I ever owned was Serge Gainsbourg’s “JeT’aime Moi Non Plus” – an odd one for a 7 yr old – but I’ve been a fan ever since. So I look forward to hearing Mick Harvey perform songs that don’t get to be heard often enough!SON LUX ARTIST PICKS

Patti Smith – Really interested in witnessing her take on Horses now! I could not imagine what it wouldbeliketoperformsomethingImade40yearsago. Ihaveafeelingthatthereisavery specific magic that will be sparked in this situation.

  • Run The Jewels – If I were a sports star, Run The Jewels would be my walk out music. Also Killer Mike is one of the best MC’s alive. Not to be missed.
  • Young Fathers – I remember the first time I saw Young Fathers was at SXSW in 2013. I had never heard of them, but I remember leaving that show thinking “I have no idea what I just saw, but that was awesome.” It was a bewildering, visceral and sanctified experience.
  • Doldrums- I’ve been a fan of Doldrums since they released Empire Sound in 2011. They have a knack for moulding bizarre sonics into pop songs. I’ve also heard that they are wild live.
  • Ought- Caught a bit of their set at a festival once and was really impressed. Ecstatic, propulsive and tightly woven. Highly recommended.MICK HARVEY ARTIST PICKS

At OFF this year I would love to try and catch the shows by Patti Smith, Arto Lindsay and The Residents, but I suspect I will already have left the country in order to return to Australia.

THE JULIE RUIN ARTIST PICKS

H e r e ‘ s j u s t a f e w o f t h e b a n d s w e w a n t t o s e e :

  • PATTI SMITH performing Horses. “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine…” Maybe one of the best and most influential opening lines on a rock album, ever.
  • ARTO LINDSAY aka DNA which had one of the first girl drummers that inspired us. Plus, its fricken Arto Lindsay!
  • GIRL BAND. Sara says they have to be seen live to get them, and are her favorite live band of 2015. They are nice guys. Plus they admit their name sucks and they should’ve changed it…
  • BUFFALO DAUGHTER. Japanese 90’s disco dance. We’re especially smitten with the unbearable coolness of guitarist SuGar.
  • MICK HARVEY covering Serge Gainsburg (from Bad Seeds and BIrthday Party). Gorgeous guitar tones, not to mention he produced “Let England Shake” by PJ Harvey that Kathi and Sara both love.
  • OGOYA NENGO & The DODO WOMEN GROUP. All female group from Kenya.
  • SELVHUNTER Danish all female noise experimental jazz group (Sara listens to this kind of thing in her car. Maybe too often in the rest of the band’s opinion. Especially in bad traffic)
  • SONGHOY BLUES. The famous band from Mali that were banned by Islamic extremists. We’re struck by their unique nonwestern song structures.
  • SUN RA ARKESTRA. Afrofuturism? Yes.
  • BUDOS BAND. Ethiopian afrofuturism? Yes.
  • HALIU MERGIA. A star in the Ethiopian music scene in the 70’s. Now a cab driver in DC.?
  • KING KHAN Because, Garage Rock.
