Festival Friday – Where to see the best selectors this summer
This #festivalfriday is all about #selectors. Their extensive record collections and eclectic mixes have made these music selectors some of the most buzzed about DJs in recent years. Don’t miss their sets at some of the best summer festivals in 2016.
TIM SWEENEY AT BILBAO BBK LIVE
Starting off the list is Tim Sweeney, a true selector. One of the rare DJs who is known only for selecting as opposed to producing music of his own, he’s been hosting his famous “Beats in Space” show since he was a student at NYU in 1999. This year he’s in charge of making the crowd dance at Bilbao BBK Live. Set atop the Kobetamendi Hill with breathtaking views across culture-rich Bilbao, the 2016 edition of Bilbao BBK Live will showcase acts including Arcade Fire, Pixies, Foals, New Order, Underworld, Tame Impala, Four Tet, Erol Alkan, Ame, Red Axes, M83, Years & Years, Hot Chip, Wolf Alice, Courtney Barnett, Soulwax & more. SECRETSUNDAZE AT ELECTRIC ELEPHANT
Secretsundaze (Giles Smith & James Priestley) have been dominating dancefloors for over 15 years, with their London party series of the same name having firmly established itself as one of Europe’s most distinct voices in underground electronic music. Renowned worldwide for their impeccable selection skills, the duo have toured extensively, performing at some of the world’s most influential clubs such as the Robert Johnson, Output, Fabric, Space, Panorama Bar, The Rex and Trouw to name just a few. Don’t miss them at Croatia’s Electric Elephant Festival this summer, where they will perform twice, including a Secretsundaze Boat Party with Brooklyn’s finest DJ duo Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter a.k.a.”Mister Saturday Night”. SARAH FARINA AT EXIT FESTIVAL
Sarah Farina blends bass-heavy footwork and futuristic beats effortlessly with UK funk and R’n’B grooves, bringing some of the best vibes to Berlin’s clubs and beyond. Her eclectic style should go over well at Exit Festival, which mixes indie rockers like Bastille and The Vaccines with some of the biggest names in techno and electronic music such as Dimitri Vegas, Dave Clarke, Marco Carola and Nina Kraviz. DJ KOZE AT OFF FESTIVAL
Where to even begin with Koze? Legendary mixer, producer and contributor to the DJ Kicks series – Koze always stays true to his commitment to out-there, bordering on weird sampling techniques and productions. His release “XTC” was voted #5 on Resident Advisor’s “Best tracks of 2015” list. Seeing as he has roots in the Hip Hop scene, he will fit brilliantly into OFF Festival’s mix of other artists such as Flatbush Zombies and grindcore legends Napalm Death. &ME AT SZIGET
Part of the charming Berlin-based Keinemusik collective, &ME is a local hero and club kid favorite. His musical selections will please those with a soft spot for deep house with soulful vocals. At Sziget he’s sharing the bill with some of the biggest names in music, with heavy hitters like Rihanna, Noel Gallagher, Muse, Sia, Jake Bugg, Bloc Party, Chvrches and The Last Shadow Puppets. MIDLAND AT WOODED
Since coming up in 2010, Harry Agius aka Midland has delighted dancefloors with a flirtatious mix of techno, disco and UK sounds, quickly making him one of Britain’s most beloved selectors. He’s also hilarious on Twitter. This year he’ll be bringing his record collection to WOODED, the festival founded by Polish DJ duo Catz ‘N Dogz at the stunning imperial castle CK Zamek in Wrocław. STUDIO BARNHUS AT MYSTERYLAND
Stockholm’s Studio Barnhus founders Axel Boman, Kornel Kovacs and Pedrodollar will perform together as Barnhus at this year’s Mysteryland festival in The Netherlands! Amongst them they’ve clocked up releases on Pampa, Border Community, Numbers and Smallville, winning a legion of fans along the way. The enigmatic trio behind the turntables at Mysteryland is sure to be a festival highlight. With over 346 acts, criss-crossing house, techno, disco, African beats, vinyl-only, hardstyle, hip hop and feel-good bands, there’s something for every electronic music fan at Mysteryland. This year’s line-up also boasts Diplo, Seth Troxler, Martin Garrix, Karenn and Tom Trago to name just a few, and the extensive lifestyle and culture programme also features theatre, movies, live art, interactive installation art, street performers, hidden raves in the forests and spectacular shows. YOUNG MARCO AT WECANDANCE
Amsterdam-based DJ and certified dude Young Marco hops over to the neighboring country of Belgium for WECANDANCE. In Zeebrugge he joins DJ Tennis, Eduardo Castillo, Jamie Jones, Maribou State, Recondite, Roy Davis Jr, Pachanga Boys, Vaal and more. Food, Art and Fashion are also a big part of the #WCD16 experience, with an international range of signature dishes developed by premium restaurants and chefs, expert mixologists and roaming sommeliers, plus Belgium’s rising fashion stars and impressive art installations from some of Belgium’s most respected artists. OBJEKT AT OASIS
Objekt is one of the most technically skilled DJs out there. His performances at Boiler Room in Berlin and at Dekmantel demonstrate his ease behind the decks wonderfully. Creating only the best of vibes on the dancefloor, he’s a club favorite in his adopted city Berlin and beyond. This year, he’ll join the likes of Bicep, B.Traits, David August, Dixon, Derrick May, Dubfire, Helena Hauff, Hunee, Job Jobse, Tale Of Us, The Black Madonna and Virginia at Morocco’s Oasis, one of the most exciting festivals for enthusiasts of the art of DJing. Ryan Crosson EP Out This Week on MDRNTY Records
Don’t miss this 3 track EP from Ryan Crosson marking the first release for the new MDRNTY imprint.
MDRNTY Records is a brand new label from the celebrated Swiss party brand that is renowned for developing daytime electronic music events in the most outstanding locations of the Swiss Alps for the past 10 years. The first release comes from esteemed techno artist and Visionquest founder, Ryan Crosson, and is due out in April during the MDRNTY festival.
2016 marks the beginning of a new adventure with the MDRNTY Records imprint offering a platform to showcase a network of artists closely related to their events. Be it house, techno or anything in between, the label releases all share a common aesthetic: emotionally charged dance electronic music that fits in any alpine daytime Modernity Event set.
Ryan Crosson certainly knows how to make such music, given that over the last ten years the Detroit born star has put out a wealth of EPs on labels like his own Visionquest—also a touring live and DJ collective made up of Shaun Reeves and Lee Curtiss—plus Minus, Wagon Repair and Supplemental Facts. He has played every major club and festival going, has put out a mix CD and is a true star of the modern underground scene.
Up first is the excellent ‘Aphelion’, a slick and quick electro styled futuristic techno cut with wobbly, flabby bass synths fleshing out an arresting groove. Spaced out pads add depth and serenity in the background of this most emotive and well produced club cut.
‘Appalachia’ is then a much more carefully reduced brew of minimal beats and hits. It is pure electronic funk in its finest form with rubbery kicks, dehumanised vocals and airy hi hats up top, all of which draw you ever deeper into its bubbly rhythms.
Last but not least, ‘Bambi Hands’ is a hiccuping affair with whirring machines, alien synth daubs and playful sine waves all jostling for attention. It makes you want to move your every limb in appreciation and is third completely different cut that makes this EP as varied as it is vital, giving the perfect imagery of those endless dancing afternoons on the top of the Swiss Alps for which Modernity is famous.
This EP is a brilliant way to kick off what is sure to become an essential and carefully curated label for fans of fresh and original house, techno and plenty in between.

NR& – SPOKEN FOR EP (KEINEMUSIK)
Almost exactly three years after NR&, a project uniting &ME, Rampa and New York Disco-House-siren Nomi, dropped their debut EP, we finally can announce a new chapter in this ongoing transatlantic trio. The “Spoken For” EP is comprised of two new tracks, that again fuse songwriting with floor-demands and showcase the same crackling and pulse quickening passion that has become NR&’s trademark. So here’s the evidence – a long distance relationship is not necessarily doomed to get boring after a while.
“Taste Like” on A might be conceived as the club-affair of those two new joints. A tune indulging in self-control, extending the pre- eruptive moment of excitement to track length. There is Nomi’s unmistakeable sexed up oration, flanked by an affirmative thunderstorm of claps, then a bass heavy bridge, overflowing into a noise brushed finale. Altogether a tasty flavour carrier for an effective floor heating.
“Spoken For” is not only the title track, but also the hymn coming out of the flipside ambush. There is no kick necessary to underpin what Nomi’s charismatic croon is laying down. Therefore a wise choice to let the arrangement of interspersed field recordings, percussive details and piano- and synth-decoration exercise in unobtrusiveness. Safe to say, this tune will refine many future peaktimes.
