European Festival Awards Announce Shortlists and Lifetime Achievement Award

THE EUROPEAN FESTIVAL AWARDS PRESENTS THE 2023 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - RUUD BERENDS
SHORTLISTED NOMINEES FOR THE EUROPEAN FESTIVAL AWARDS 2023 UNVEILED

With the 13th edition of the European Festival Awards set to take place on January 17th in Groningen, The Netherlands the European Festival Awards is proud to announce that this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Ruud Berends. He is the co-founder and Head of Agenda of IFF in London (GB) and advisor for Westway Lab in Guimaraes (PT), Canadian Music Week in Toronto (CA), and SoAlive Music Conference in Sofia (BG). From 2002 till 2018 Ruud was project manager of the various Dutch Music Export organisations and executive producer of the Dutch Impact Parties for Buma Cultuur. From 2002 to March 2023, he worked for Buma Cultuur & ESNS as Head of Conference, ETEP & CEETEP, international marketing and sales. In this position, Ruud Berends was crucial for the networking and interconnection of European artists and promoters alike – especially the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) at Eurosonic was his brainchild.

In a previous life, Ruud also was co-founder, dj, cook, promoter and toilet cleaner of youth Centre Débarak in Zutphen and co-founder and co-owner of International Booking Agency Paperclip who broke the new and alternative scene into the eye of the mainstream throughout the 80's and early 90's. The agency took loads of bands on tour all over Europe, too many to mention - but Soundgarden, Nirvana and Mudhoney and their contemporaries were all part of the hustle.

“Life is full of surprises. I did not know that I was up for an award. I am deeply honoured, humbled and grateful to have won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Especially, as it is at the European Festival Awards, an event close to my heart. It means a lot to get this award from this part of the music industry with many friends and music industry family in the room.” says Ruud Berends.

Congratulations to Ruud Berends and thank you for dedicating your professional life and beyond to connecting artists and the music industry in general!

Furthermore, we’re announcing the shortlists for 12 of the ceremony’s categories. Over 50’000 votes have been cast for the 2023 European Festival Awards in the main public categories. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of those who applied, voted and otherwise participated in the Awards this year.

Brace yourselves for an immersive experience across four riveting stages, each dedicated to a distinct facet of the night time economy:

The main stage will host a convergence of leaders from major cities, governance bodies, central government, and global night time economy experts. This platform aims to facilitate collaborative discussions on challenges and opportunities within the night economy, showcasing successful initiatives and fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue. Topics include urban safety, cultural enrichment, economic sustainability, and technology's role in enhancing the nocturnal experience. The main stage serves as a hub for thought leadership, driving actionable strategies for the evolution of vibrant night economies globally.

Hosted by Defected Records, Stage 2 promises to be an electrifying experience as it plays host to the first two day collaboration with one of the most successful labels in the UK. This stage will be a hub of innovation, featuring insightful conversations on crucial aspects of the electronic music industry, including management strategies, the role of agents, trends in publishing, effective promotional techniques, and the evolving landscape of record labels. With a lineup of experts and influential figures, Stage 2 is set to explore the cutting-edge developments shaping the future of electronic music within the vibrant night-time economy.

During Stage 3, Day 2, we further strengthen our global ties with Vibelab, a key player in the international night-time economy movement. Their unique perspective unfolds on the stage, highlighting innovations in safety, ergonomics, communication, data management, and advocacy. This collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering a safer and more efficient global nightlife experience.

Stage 3 on day 2 at the Night Time Economy Summit hosted by We are the Fair, the discussions surrounding independent festivals and events delve into the myriad challenges that organisers face in this dynamic sector. Independent festivals play a crucial role in shaping the cultural landscape, fostering creativity, and providing unique experiences. However, they often encounter obstacles such as financial constraints, regulatory hurdles, and logistical complexities. Balancing the need for safety and compliance with the desire to maintain the distinctive character of these events is an ongoing challenge. Moreover, the unpredictable nature of external factors, including weather conditions and public health concerns, further adds to the complexity. The summit serves as a platform for stakeholders to collaboratively explore innovative solutions, share best practices, and advocate for policies that support the sustainability and growth of independent festivals within the Night Time Economy.

Step into the spotlight of Stage 4 at the Night Time Economy Summit during the nocturnal hours, where the spotlight is on Advocacy, Accessibility, Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability. Delve into an exploration of innovative strategies dedicated to making the night time economy universally accessible while fervently championing diversity and inclusion. As the night unfolds, contribute to a dynamic conversation centred around sustainability, collectively steering toward a greener, more environmentally responsible nocturnal landscape. Join us in engaging in conversations that transcend the night, shaping the future of our after-dark world in ways that truly matter.

As a beacon of innovation, the summit will feature insights from government officials across the UK, including the esteemed partnership of Greater Manchester Combined Authority, ensuring that public policies evolve in tandem with the dynamic needs of the night time economy. ESNS Exchange will host several events and panels during ESNS in January. ESNS Exchange is funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission and is organised in collaboration with Yourope, the export offices and the media partner EBU.

ESNS shifts its focus to the Netherlands on Saturday. Industry delegates will return to De Oosterpoort for a third day of the music conference on Saturday, making it the main business hub for the European music industry during the entire three-day music conference. Starting at 3 PM, the full-day conference programme blends seemlessly into a buzzing music event for the annual Noorderslag festival, where Dutch acts traditionally showcase their talent. Amsterdam Dance Event looks back on exceptional edition and announces dates for ADE 2024

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) welcomed a record number of 500,000 visitors throughout its Festival and Conferences, which took place over five days and nights.  Next year’s edition of ADE will take place October 16—20, 2024.

The 28th edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event has come to an end, hosting 2,900+ artists at over 1,000 events and initiatives taking place in over 200 locations across the city, and welcoming a record number of 500,000 global visitors and 650,000 sold tickets.

ADE has grown to become the most important and influential breeding ground for electronic music culture and talent. This year’s program showcased a wide array of electronic music subgenres, live music and cultural crossovers throughout its Festival and Arts & Culture programs, focusing on a diverse and inclusive offering both in terms of artist roster and audiences. Standout events included the opening event at Rijksmuseum by upsammy, Metropole Orkest & Tinlicker, a one-off b2b between KI/KI and Armin van Buuren, and social impact events by Music Moves. Familiar staples such as Speedy J’s STOOR, Audio Obscura, Martin Garrix’ 18+ and All Ages events, also saw their return to ADE, alongside new collaborations such as Andalusisch Orkest x Mary Lake and Het HEM x Horst.

ADE Pro Conference

In addition to the enormous variety of sold out festival events, the ADE Pro Conference extended its programming to four days for the first time this year. The conference welcomed global artists and influential companies to Felix Meritis to  cover the strategies, opportunities and responsibilities that define the music industry.

Global industry leaders and tech experts at Google, TuneCore, SEG and more envisioned the enormous impact of Artificial Intelligence, and platforms including Spotify, TikTok, YouTube and Beatport offered real insider knowledge to attendees. The new ADE Startups also kicked off a year-long development platform for innovative startups, and international event organisers gathered for a deep discussion on the future of festivals. In addition, the conference invited world class artists on stage, including DJ icon Grandmaster Flash, The Blessed Madonna, Röyksopp and Max Cooper - with the latter two also hosting one-off live performances for all conference attendees.

ADE Lab, the talent development gathering for young artists and professionals, saw a hugely successful sophomore edition, nurturing and supporting the next generation in electronic music. Over 2,000 young artists, producers and aspiring professionals learned from world class artists including Reinier Zonneveld, Mama Snake, Saoirse, Héctor Oaks and A-Trak, create music together with newfound connections, receive feedback on their work, and compete in demo drops.

The Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to nurturing electronic music, its culture and its industry worldwide. The organisation devotes itself to stimulating development, innovation and talent, gathering the global industry and laying a foundation for future generations.
