folk
Even though they hail from different latitudes, and they have trodden different paths, Frankie Chavez and Peixe are united in their work with the guitar.
Peixe popped up on everyone’s radar more than twenty years ago, as the behind the muscular and unmistakable guitar sound in Ornatos Violeta, the mythical Porto band. But that was only the beginning of a long and fruitful journey. Pluto followed Ornatos, as did the delirious experiences in Zelig, a host of collaborations, and two astounding solo records, exploring the possibilities of his favorite musical instrument – “Apneia” and “Motor”. Ever since his debut in 2010, Frankie Chavez has consistently proven himself to be one of the most exciting musicians of his generation. Inspired by folk and blues music, as well as the most classic rock and roll, he has been taking his music further and further – be it with a band or as a one-man-band –, standing on his unique relationship with something that’s been there from the beginning: a guitar.
Together and using the instrument that has become the natural extension of themselves, Frankie Chavez and Peixe take us all to places where no-one has been before. Their music is rich, without ever becoming excessive. It’s coherent, without ever becoming repetitive.
This is a road you drive calmly through, contemplating. A road that sometimes winds up all the way to the peak of the tallest mountain, and that at other times stretches on straight, in the lazy desert heat, carrying the sound of those strings vibrating inside different frames, electric or acoustic, the two playing as one.
Live, they perform over a background of images that are manipulated in real time; a “concert-film” that stands out by the mutual inspiration the dual universes of music and image play on each other and that audiences readily take in.

Lina_Raul Refree
Fado/electronic
Fado rewired and recast. Raül Refree - one of Europe's most innovative producers (Rosalía, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo) - meets Lina, a Portuguese singer renowned for her haunting interpretations of Amalia's classic repertoire. Analog synths and hushed sonics. Making history by breaking the rules. Shedding the skin. A fresh beginning. That’s what singer Lina and producer/multi-instrumentalist Raül Refree have given Portuguese fado on Lina_Raül Refree. They’ve sloughed off the old trappings and exacting traditions of the country’s national music and given it into a perfect fit for the 21st century. Gone are the chiming guitars that were the music’s instrumental trademark and in their place comes piano and analogue synths. Together, they’ve reinvented the music that holds a nation’s soul, and done it while keeping the rich beauty of the melodies and the aching poetry of the words that are such a vital part of the tradition. “I wanted to do something different with fado,” Lina explains. She already had a deep background
First single from the new album, out on Glitterbeat Records on 17th Jan https://youtu.be/-6wgBr7FUus
PONGO
kuduro
PONGO embodies the renewal of Kuduro, mixing her African, Langan & Zairian roots with EDM, bass music, dancehall & melodic pop. Her powerful, rhythmic, but equally fragile & sensitive voice draws us into her world, on the borders of dance & saudade, where no one has taken us before.
Supported via MMETA. Also selected by NME as one of their Essential New artists for 2020, praised by TLOBF and received a lot of play on 6 Music. .
Sensible Soccers
Pop/electronic
Sensible Soccers are a band from a seaside town in the north of Portugal. The band has come a long way since they released their eponymous EP in 2011. They’re famous for their hypnotic shows and for their sweet empathy with the audience. Their live shows granted them a sort of cult status, their reputation cemented by dreamy and moving albums like Aurora.
In their discography we can still find their second EP (Fornelo Tapes Vol.1), one single with a strange music video (“Sofrendo por você”) and their first long-play released in 2014. This record, called “8” (eight), had great reviews and good press coverage. The response from the public was also very enthusiastic and they had a long tour around Portugal, but also did some gigs in Spain and Paris.
In early 2016 they’ve surprised everyone and released their second album, “Villa Soledade”. Inspired by the local routes around Fornelo, a small northern rural village where the band have their headquarters. In 2019 they released their third album called "Aurora", focusing on the theme of memory and childhood holidays.
Sensible Soccers makes mostly instrumental music, with a wide range of musical approaches, which are sometimes more ambient-oriented, with thickly-layered synths, guitars masterfully work wrapping the arrangements, in an inventive-yet-coherent way but also bringing us thumping beats that range from shy wink to the dance floor, to the fragile emotional down-tempo.

Music superstars, true legends and the hottest newcomers make the first 20 acts announced for the much-awaited EXIT Festival's big 20 years celebration festivals that will take place from 9 to 12 July 2020 at the spectacular 18th century Petrovaradin Fortress, overlooking the Danube to festival's hometown Novi Sad in Serbia! Combined together, they bring global hits with more than 20 billion YouTube views featuring various styles of electronic, rock, metal and hip-hop music in a diverse lineup that EXIT is known for. David Guetta, Tyga, James Arthur, Fatboy Slim, Boris Brejcha, Sepultura, Meduza, ARTBAT and Zhu, to name a few, will be playing one of world's most beloved and award-winning festivals that started as a peace and freedom movement back in 2000. Ever since its rebellious roots, EXIT won two titles of the Best Major European Festival at European festival awards, the Best Overseas Festival at UK Festival Awards and dozens of other awards and recognitions by some of the world’s most influential media.
Headlining
this first of many announcements is David
Guetta, one of the most successful music producers of the 21st century with
more than 50 million sold albums and singles, two Grammy Awards and over 100
million fans on social media. Guetta and EXIT go way back growing on a global
scene with each other, so it's no surprise the Parisian DJ superstar was topped
the recent wishlist of EXIT fans! Joining him on the Main Stage will be Tyga, a famed rapper straight outta
Compton, whose popularity is easiliy measured with over 30 million Spotify
streamings a month and regular top ranks on the Billboard RnB/Rap charts. Tyga
(Thank You God Always) is rightly considered to be one
of the leading rappers of today as, in addition to a whopping 74 singles, he
also has seven studio albums with this year’s Legendary turning platinum! EXIT
welcomes yet another streaming multibillionare, the popular English songwriter
with a booming voice James Arthur,
who lead the UK charts along with Billboard Hot 100 on more than one occasion!
Arthur is also among 20 UK artists to have sold over two million singles, while
his three albums over the past seven years birthed hits such as Impossible, Say You Won't Let Go, You
Deserve Better and many others.
Guetta will be joined by another legendary DJ and producer, as well as an extraordinary showman who is equally a big part of EXIT's 20-year long history, Fatboy Slim! After a major arena tour this year, he returns to EXIT's Main Stage to show once again why he rightfully headlines the biggest festivals and is considered to be one of the most important disc jockeys of all time. One of the most popular from the new generation of EXIT stars Boris Brejcha, also returns at a time of unprecedented popularity. The adored German DJ with a "joker" mask is known for his unique sets made exclusively of his own tracks and massive shows at EXIT's gargantuan Dance Arena stage. Another act that won the world with unbriddled power of their own music, the Ukranian hit DJ duo ARTBAT will debut at EXIT on its big 20th edition. Arthur and Batish do not cease to fascinate fans with exceptional sets such is the one for epic streaming platform Cercle, followed by EXIT's own pilot version of new LIFE STREAM project at the Amsterdam Dance Event. Joining this rich dance music selection will also be Meduza, considered a favorite of the upcoming Grammys for its global hit Piece of Your Heart that racked over 600 million streams, with platinum sales and the top of the US, UK and many other charts worldwide! EXIT will also see the return of the mysterious DJ and producer ZHU, hitmaker behind tunes such as Faded, In the Morning, Working for it and countless other singles, with remixes for Lana Del Ray or Calvin Harris.
The first EXIT wave would have not been the same without
handful of guitar titans, such as the powerful Brazilian Sepultura, a lelegendary
metal band with 14 albums and some of the riffs which have left a mark on rock
music in general. New York-born, heavy metal musician Billy Milano, with his
M.O.D. (Method of Destruction), will
also be at the gargantuan Petrovaradin Fortress next year, together with theRussian metalheads Moscow Death Brigade, rock guerrilla Crippled Black Phoenix, dark-wave heroes
She Past Away and the Brit deathcore
mainstays Bury Tomorrow.
EXIT’s 20th anniversary simply could not pass without the return of some of its first headliners, those who were brave, or simply crazy enough to be among the first to attend a new festival in Serbia, a place diametrically opposite to all they had heard about it, a place where they came face to face with the best possible audience in the world. Yes, the Bristol alt-rockers Kosheen and the trio of live bass music icons Roni Size and LTJ Bukem will be returning to the Fortress, for a special EXIT reunion.
Tickets for EXIT are available via exitfest.org. The official tourist agency of the festival, exittrip.org offers tour packages containing tickets, as well as accommodation and transport options.

ESNS2020 Conference Update: ESNS Tech, Beercrate Sessions, EPIC, Focus on Switzerland, New Panels and MMETA's
With six weeks 'till ESNS and we'd like to get you up to speed on the conference, festival and the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards. It's all in this newsletter with a great new outline of the Saturday, new panels, sessions, the Tech programme, the European Production and Innovation conference and our focus on Switzerland.
A new Saturday Outline
On the Saturday of the event, ESNS Conference moves to a brand new conference centre: Forum Groningen. This allows the Saturday conference to be extended with a couple of hours. The conference is directly followed by Noorderslag Festival, which is taking place in the Oosterpoort as usual.
At the Oosterpoort there's a special early entrance for delegates who are visiting Noorderslag festival, which is giving them the opportunity to enter the venue before doors open for the regular Noorderslag audience. During Noorderslag, there's a special 'networking hub' in the heart of the Oosterpoort, where music professionals can meet up, hang out and network. This is exclusively accessible for conference delegates.
Two New Beer Crate Sessions...
Maria May - CAA (GB)
Maria May's roots in dance and electronic music run deep, with 22 years under her belt representing DJs and producers including David Guetta, Frankie Knuckles, Paul Oakenfold, David Morales and Soulwax. The veteran agent currently sits on the board of advisors of the Association For Electronic Music (AFEM). At CAA, May and her expanding global team have developed her division into a crucial player with a powerful roster including Black Eyed Peas, The Chainsmokers, Nicky Romero, Alle Farben and Paul Kalkbrenner.
Sophie Hunger (CH)
Since her last album, 2015’s Supermoon, Sophie Hunger has made major changes. She moved to Berlin, got passionate about analogue synths and electronic music – Berlin’s heartbeat. She exchanged her classical instruments for drum machines and computer software and decided to write a full English album. Recorded almost entirely solo, it’s a twilight journey through the mind of an artist who’s long been loved by musicians and continental connoisseurs, and is about to plant her flag in the Anglophone world.
Planet HipHop - Challenging the Unwritten Laws
Artists in the hip hop genre have chosen their own unique way of communicating with their audiences. They are challenging all the unwritten laws of the pop and rock industry. What can we all learn from the urban approach to music, booking and promoting a show, selling tickets and performing live? With Maarten van Vugt - Mojo Concerts (NL), Julian Gupta - Melt Bookings, Splash (DE), Anna Brink - Live Nation (DK) moderated by Beckie Sudgen - X-ray Touring (GB).
Festivals & Ticketing...
The Boutique Festival Panel
Consolidation at the top end of the festivals business is placing many of Europe’s best known events in the hands of corporate owners, but just what effect is this having on the smaller, boutique events? With many artists now signing festival tour contracts with specific festival groups, is there a need for boutique event bookers to re-think their programming strategies? And while statistics suggest fans are more willing to visit smaller festivals, is there a danger that the powerful corporates are trying to squeeze out the competition in the boutique sector? With Rui Torrinha - Westway Lab (PT), Christof Huber - OpenAir St.Gallen (CH), Emma Zillmann - Bluedot | Kendall Calling (GB) and Dimitris Voglis - Release Athens (GR), moderated by Gordon Masson - IQ Magazine (GB)
Face-value European Alliance for Ticketing (FEAT)
Despite numerous measures to curb ticket scalping, it remains a sticky issue that just won’t go away. Bringing together a spectrum of industry and political figures across Europe, FEAT’s panel will look to debate the effectiveness of different approaches and whether it’s possible to reach a consensus on what a Europe-wide solution might look like. The panel will also look beyond legislation to more contentious issues, such as fans rights to resell their tickets in all circumstances, stock allocation and the role of the primary market. With Neo Sala - FEAT / Dr Music (SE) and Peter Kwint - Socialist Party (NL), moderated by Sam Shemtob - FEAT (GB)
Inspirational Sessions...

A truly unique insight in the complexity and the immense mediascope for European music.

On Thursday evening the Swiss will give you a warm welcome in the Stadsschouwburg with food, drinks and a very special show of Sophie Hunger & Julian Sartorius. On Friday, the panel ‘Diversity Roadmap’ will present good arguments, simple recommendations and potential measures for accommodating diversity and equality in clubs and at festivals, and a Beer Crate Session with Sophie Hunger.

During the SAY HI! Soundwalks on Thursday and Friday morning, groups of 10 to 12 persons will be guided through some very special locations in Groningen where various Swiss artists will offer intimate insights into their musical activities. Sign up here.
Swiss vs Dutch Cheesecontest
The Netherlands and Switzerland – two countries famous for their cheeses – invite you to a sound & flavour experiment: a Gouda vs. Gruyère contest. Open your mouth and your heart, and vote for your favourite cheese! More information here
New Panels Added at the Tech Programme
The (Almost Free) Tech Tools You Can Use to Build a Career
There is today an incredible array of powerful tools available, offering world class data insights to build a fanbase, market to them and be in control of your career. This panel will discuss how building a successful business and career starts at almost free, and will also be examining the power of the classic strategic move. With Adam Perry - Bloodhound Gang (GB), Tom Burris - ie:music (GB) and Robby Towns - Good Cop Bad Cop (US), moderated by Gary Smith (GB)
Paying Songwriters Within 24 Hours Rather Than 2 Years
Can we really pay songwriters much faster than is currently the case? A recent industry pilot by Teosto, BMAT & Revelator showed that they were able to pay royalties within 24 hours to 19 different rights-holders. But how does that happen? Some of the leaders in this field discuss how the industry can work together to ensure that songwriters can get paid faster. With Mandy Aubry - Songtrust (GB), Turo Pekari - Teosto (FI) and Sammy Andrews - Deviate Digital (GB), moderated by Chris Carey - Media Insight Consulting (GB).
Radio Models Making Sense in a Changing World...
Radio Models in 2020
Key factors in the development of successful radio models might be Digital Audio Broadcasting replacing FM broadcasting, adapting new ways of communicating and diffusing content to attract listeners and internet radio. How can the medium radio remain the simple and direct way to capture the hearts of its listeners? Glenn Peoples from Billboard Magazine (US) will quiz Marta Salicru - Radio Primavera Sound (ES), Sharid Alles - 3FM (NL), Millie Carter - BBC Introducing (GB) and Kevin Cole - KEXP (US) about their strategies
All for One… Thing: Supporting New Music
All for on thing, and for an important thing: we’re all for supporting new emerging artists. Indeed, public service broadcasters have been key in unearthing, supporting and promoting up-and-coming bands and artists over the years. What’s the score today? Others are doing it too, but the on-air and online reach of radio channels remains unique. with Tom Billington - BBC (GB), Rachel Davies - BBC (GB), Jurriën Haverlag - NPO (NL), Sam Vuillermoz - mx3 (CH) and Joris Jonckheer - VRT (BE), moderated by Menno Visser - VPRO (NL)

their careers outside their home countries, aiming to have 11 non-European
festival participants in 2020.
About ETEP
The European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) was introduced in 2003 to stimulate the exchange of European artists across Europe, and would not be possible without the funding of the support programmes for culture by the European Union. ETEP has been one of the very first programmes to support popular music on a European level. Currently ETEP receives funding by the sub-programme "Culture" as part of Creative Europe. To find out more about Creative Europe, please check https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/creative-europe/node_en
An initiative of
ESNS, ETEP facilitates the bookings of European acts on European
& international festivals outside their home countries and generates
extensive media exposure for these artists in cooperation with the European
Broadcasting Union (EBU) public radio stations, as well as national and
international media. Additionally, ETEP actively cooperates with 16 music
export offices. This way, ETEP aims to give a boost to the
international careers of European artists and highlights the
participating ETEP festivals.
Since the start of the programme ETEP has facilitated 4.392 shows by 1.609 acts in 38 countries, and we are very proud to have contributed to the careers of so many talented European acts. Many acts that received support from ETEP at the start of their careers have grown out to be very successful. Over the past 17 years, acts such as Agnes Obel, Ásgeir, Ben Howard, Benjamin Clementine, Calvin Harris, Franz Ferdinand, James Blake, MØ, Noisia, Selah Sue, The Editors, The Kooks, The XX, Within Temptation and Years & Years have greatly benefited from the support of the ETEP programme.
