Salvador Sobral and Sigrid announced as winners of 2018 European Border Breakers Awards

Salvador Sobral and Sigrid are confirmed as winners of a 2018 European Border Breakers Award (EBBA), the European music award for emerging artists who have seen outstanding success across Europe. For health reasons, Salvador Sobral could not be present at Manhãs da 3 when DJ Luis Oliveira announced the news. His manager Ana Paulo, represented him on the radio. Sigrid was surprised by DJ’s Tor-Otto Mjelde and Kjartan Ericsson live on Stjernepose at Nrk P13. Sigrid is also confirmed to play at Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) festival.

Salvador Sobral
Being the winner of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev, you would think it could only get better from there for Salvador Sobral. But life has dealt the Portuguese singer some very different cards. A serious heart condition forced him to interrupt his career in September. At an emotional last concert the 27-year old singer stated: "It is, unfortunately, time to hand over my body to science and to abandon my life of concerts and music." Sobral achieved a record win at the Eurovision competition, and the first ever for Portugal, with his ballad Amar Pelos Dois, written by his sister Luísa Sobral. In 2016 the singer had already released debut album Excuse Me, which underlines his great song writing talent.

Sigrid
Norwegian pop singer/songwriter Sigrid signed a worldwide label deal at just 20 years of age. With her rich, powerful, versatile voice, and elfin looks, she seems ready-made for pop stardom. Sigrid delivered on the promise in February 2017 with her anthemic single Don't Kill My Vibe. It became BBC Radio 1 "Hottest Record in the World" and was streamed over 37 million times, with new single Pilot Twist following the same path. Sigrid is influenced by artists like Mø, Adele and Sia.

EBBA ceremony
Earlier, Alice Merton from Germany, Skott from Sweden, Off Bloom from Denmark and Blanche from Belgium were also announced as winners of an EBBA. A total of ten artists will be awarded an EBBA over the coming weeks. The winners will receive their award in a ceremony hosted by TV personality and musician Jools Holland at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in Groningen, Netherlands, on 17 January 2018. The ceremony will also feature performances by the winning acts.

Public Choice Award
All EBBA winners are also in the running to win the Public Choice Award. Fans from all over the world can vote online from the end of November up to Christmas for their favourite emerging artist. The winner of the Public Choice Award will be announced during the EBBA ceremony at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in Groningen. Up to ten voters, chosen at random from different countries, will be invited to the award ceremony. Each winner will be able to bring a friend with the flight and hotel costs covered by Eurosonic Noorderslag.

To be eligible for the 2018 awards, the artists must have achieved border-breaking success with their first international release in Europe between 1 August 2015 and 31 July 2016 and come from a country participating in the EU's Creative Europe programme.

Alice Merton is the latest artist to be confirmed as a winner of a 2018 European Border Breakers Award (EBBA), the European music award for emerging artists who have seen outstanding success across Europe. Alice Merton was surprised with her award during rehearsals at Black Box Music in Berlin.

Alice Merton could very well be the next big popstar in Europe. With her powerful voice, her EP and the catchy song 'No Roots', the 24-year-old holds all the cards. The sentence "I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground" seems to sum up the life of the English/Canadian singer- songwriter who lived in four countries. No Roots charted high on iTunes, Spotify, Shazam and Hype Machine in France, Switzerland and Austria. In Germany, the song reached platinum status and #2 in the single charts. International success is imminent.

SURGEON AND THE HACKER REMIX DAVE CLARKE’S ‘I’M NOT AFRAID’ FEAT ANIKA

Techno and electronic music icon Dave Clarke last month released The Desecration of Desire, his first album in fourteen years, through SKINT. Today, Clarke releases two new remixes by Surgeon and The Hacker for the single ‘I’m Not Afraid’, which features the sublime vocals of Anika.

The first remix comes from legendary DJ Surgeon, who has been at the forefront of UK techno since the early 1990s and has a past history of working with Clarke. The second comes from another veteran of the techno world, French electroclash and techno producer The Hacker who has been making his own music in the classic Detroit style since 1995.

Listen here: https://DaveClarke.lnk.to/AfraidRMXPR

Says Clarke: “I bought Anika’s album from Get Records in Amsterdam when it came out, Masters of War was the track for me and I have always thought about working together on a bass heavy track and her lyrics here are sublime and political”.

Over the last three decades, Clarke has proved a singular voice in the underground dance world. As well as turning out essential tracks such as his famous Red Series, he has also hosted his influential White Noise radio show, which has just surpassed 600 episodes and remixed an array of artists including Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, A Place To Bury Strangers, Placebo, Underworld and Soft Moon.

The Desecration of Desire follows 1995’s collection of singles Archive One and 2003’s Devil’s Advocate, which came produced under various outside pressures. The album itself contains very little techno. “Not because I don’t like it—I live and breathe it every single week—but I wanted to make an album that was not a collection of club tracks. I listen to many types of music all the time and I felt free for the first time to implement this approach for my own project.” As such it comes coloured with the perspectives of “some delightful, intelligent and deep people who inspired me in their own way” such as LOUISAHHH, Mark Lanegan, Mt. Sims, Anika, Gazelle Twin and Keith Tenniswood.

“The ‘baron of techno’ conjures a brooding, medieval mood with songs that loom in murky light.”- Financial Times

Baron of techno Dave Clarke’s first album in 14 years is worth the wait.”– Line of Best Fit

Blanche announced as winner of 2018 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA)

Today in Liège, Belgium, Blanche was announced as a winner of the 2018 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA), the European music awards for emerging artists with outstanding success across Europe. Blanche was surprised at Pure Like On Stage, organized by PURE FM.

Blanche
Blanche stepped into the spotlight when she represented Belgium at the first semi-final of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev. It's hard to imagine a better version of the folky song City Lights, but she did it again in the final. It earned her a 4th place ranking. The young Belgian singer has a soothing, husky voice that reminds of Lorde and London Grammar's Hannah Reid. Blanche is signed to PIAS, and with just this one song released so far, that has racked-up over 20 million streams, it is safe to say the world is eager to see and hear her next move.

ESNS announce keynote interview with Harvey Goldsmith

Legendary English rock promoter Harvey Goldsmith is confirmed for a keynote interview at the ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) Conference, moderated by renowned British journalist Allan McGowan. Goldsmith is widely recognised and highly respected as a visionary producer, manager and promoter of rock concerts, charity events and television broadcasts. He has worked with the world's biggest artists and ran two of the largest music events ever, Live Aid and Live 8. His current projects include UK concert tours by Jools Holland, Andrea Bocelli and Hans Zimmer.

Goldsmith joins the conference alongside the previously announced industry heavyweight Scumeck Sabottka (MCT-Agentur, DE) who will take part in a keynote with Emma Banks, making this years line up strong from the outset and not to be missed. ESNS will take place in Groningen (The Netherlands) from the 17th to 20th of January 2018.

Biography Harvey Goldsmith
Born in 1946 in the north London district of Edgware, Goldsmith founded live music venue Club 66 while a pharmacy student in Brighton. By the end of the sixties the young student had already organised large live events at the Brighton Metropole as well as creating and producing rock events like the Crystal Palace Garden Parties. Clearly it was time to move to bigger events and larger stadiums, and in 1976 he promoted a show for prog-rock act Yes at Queens Park Rangers' football ground. His first global TV event as a promoter was The Concerts for Kampuchea in 1978 at Hammersmith Odeon, London, featuring artists such as Paul McCartney, Queen and The Who. In 1985 he and Bob Geldof set up Live Aid, a seventeen-hour live TV event watched in over sixty countries that also raised £140 million for charity. Goldsmith has received numerous awards including a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1996, and more recently a Diamond Award for his contribution to The Arts. In July 2012, Goldsmith received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Brighton.

Other previous winners include Dua Lipa, Stromae, Gabriel Rios, Hozier, Of Monsters and Men, Mumford & Sons, Aurora, Disclosure, John Newman, C2C, Tokio Hotel, The Script, Years and Years, Robin Schulz, Carnival Youth, MØ and Selah Sue.

From the group of enthusiastic gig-goers out on the weekend to the industry dedicated to making the music you love, Music Moves Europe. The EBBA are one of the EU's ways of celebrating European popular and contemporary music, by bringing the artists, the industry and the fans together to celebrate European music.

15th edition of EBBA
Every year, 10 European artists receive an EBBA to recognise their success in countries other than their own. This success is measured by: airplay, sales, live performances in Europe, position in the  European Border Breakers Charts

To be eligible for the 2018 awards, the artists must have achieved border-breaking success with their first international release in Europe between 1 August 2015 and 31 July 2016 and come from a country participating in the EU's Creative Europe programme.

The EBBA, now in their 15th year, is an EU Prize, organised by Eurosonic Noorderslag in partnership with the European Commission (Creative Europe) and the European Broadcasting Union, with support from Buma Cultuur, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Province of Groningen, the City of Groningen and Music Week.
