More Acts for OFF Festival Katowice 2016

This August weekend in Katowice is a celebration of alternative music in all its forms: where else but at the OFF Festival could you hear shoegaze, jazz, and grunge next to noise, techno, and rap?

Lush
You could try to define Lush using genre labels: fans of both shoegaze and Britpop eagerly admit to their fascination with this English band’s music. You could also talk about them in terms of time and place: they were, after all, the jewel in 4AD’s crown and a part of the alternative guitar revolution that took British music by storm in the late 80s and early 90s. Their ascent was cut short by the suicide of drummer Chris Acland, and it took a seventeen-year hiatus before the rest of the group could once again take the stage. Luckily Miki Berenyi, Emma Anderson, and Phil King have gotten back together (with Elastica’s Justin Welch on percussion), and we can once again enjoy their music, regardless of whether you prefer the hazy, dreamy debut album Spooky, or the cheerful, dynamic tracks off of Lovelife.

GZA
We at the OFF Festival love to invite artists that expand and defy genre boundaries, but we’re just as interested in the people who invented the genres themselves. The American rapper GZA, member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, actually fits into both categories. Now rightfully considered a classic, the Wu-Tang revolutionized the game back in the day, but GZA isn’t cashing in on that status as a solo artist: he’s constantly blazing new trails and seeking out new forms of expression. Which is why we impatiently await his appearance at the OFF Festival as well as his upcoming album Dark Matter, which features collaborations with such artists as… Vangelis.

Jaga Jazzist
The jazz renaissance that swept Europe at the turn of the century was largely the work of the Scandinavian scene, which made creative use of the classics in combination with fresher sounds. The Norwegian collective helmed by the Horntveth brothers is a prime example, with roots reaching back to John Coltrane and Aphex Twin alike. Jaga Jazzist works just as well in the context of modern electronic music as it does backed up by a chamber orchestra (as proved by their collaboration with the Britten Sinfonia), and the stage is their natural habitat: intense and exhilarating, their shows are known for breaking boundaries between genres and between the band and the audience.

Mudhoney
We admit that this band’s absence from our festival has cast a shadow on the long-standing friendship between the OFF Festival and the cult US label Sub Pop, but this year we’re catching up, and we’re proud and happy to announce the addition of Mudhoney to the 2016 lineup. From the release of their legendary 1988 EP Superfuzz Bigmuff to their latest album, Vanishing Point (2013), everything about their music screams, vibrates, and dances. After all, we’re dealing with the leading figures in the punk revolution from Seattle that fans and journalists call grunge. Join us in front of the stage if you’re not afraid to get dirty…

Andrew Weatherall b2b Roman Flügel
Weatherall is a British DJ/producer who grew up on the post-punk scene (he started out remixing such bands as Happy Mondays, New Order, and Primal Scream), but he’s equally comfortable in the realm of techno and house. Meanwhile, the equally versatile Roman Flügel is one of the top names in the world of German electronic music. This DJ, producer, and co-owner of the labels Ongaku, Klang, and Playhouse is just as familiar to regulars of Ibiza as he is at Berlin’s Berghain. This joint set by Weatherall and Flügel needs no endorsement: you already know where you’ll be spending part of one hot summer night at the OFF Festival.

Lightning Bolt
People often talk about which bands are and aren’t a good fit for the OFF Festival — we even argue about it here at OFF headquarters. And then you have artists that are not only completely uncontroversial, but actually appear to be made for us — and we for them. So when Lightning Bolt struck, everything was suddenly clear! This American duo has spent fifteen years getting us comfortable with the fact that you should never get too comfortable with anything; that music is an adventure, a surprise, and a challenge. Lightning Bolt is all about noisy sounds that bend genres and break conventions, unpredictable concerts in unconventional places, and an abstract sense of humor. We’ve been waiting for you, guys.

Yung Lean
He’s coming to Poland. In April. We know you know, but his show at 1500m² is already sold out. And no wonder: this Swedish rapper has been riding a swelling wave since the release of Unknown Death 2002 three years ago. To Americans, he’s a funhouse mirror admired with fascination and disbelief. To Europeans, he’s proof of that fact that you can record original and charismatic rap tracks with a global reach on this side of the pond. So Jonatan Leandoer Håstad is coming back in the summer, this time to Katowice. It’s about time stepped out of the clubs and onto a bigger stage.

Exit Festival Adds Cock Sparrer, Anti – Flag, At the Gates and Borghesia To The Bill!

The undisputed leaders of heavy punk and metal sound, rooted in today's world's underground are heading over to Exit Festival's live music temples, Fusion and Explosive stages! The best live punk band and one of the most influential street punk acts of all time, Cock Sparrer, will be headlining Fusion Stage on Saturday, 9 July. Another representatives of the sound, the American anti-establishment advocates Anti-Flag are coming to Serbia for the first time to defend their cause on the first day of the festival, no less than at the loud Explosive Stage! The same stage will also welcome pioneers of the Gothenburg metal sound, At the Gates, on Friday, 8 July, while on the last day, the uncompromised heavy sound is brought to Fusion Stage by the regional innovators of the EBM, electronic dark rock sound, Borghesia from Ljubljana, Slovenia!

One of the most prominent punk names in the world, Cock Sparrer, are finally coming to Exit Festival! The very beginning of '80s saw the release of the eponymous “Shock Troops”, one of the most influential punk albums of all time. Their major rise came during the ‘90s with the release of “Guilty as Charged”, whereas today they are one of the most wanted punk rock bands always increasing their horde of fans who remember the band’s gigs for the rest of their lives!

Cock Sparrer - Live at Brasil: https://youtu.be/GlXzTARCoMA

Controversial, activist punk rock band who use the inverted American flag as their symbol, Anti-Flag, are coming to Serbia for the first time! Formed in Pittsburgh, and inspired by political messages and innuendos of Dead Kennedys and The Clash, they created a big bang on the world's music scene in the beginning of the '90s, with their later albums “For Blood And Empire“ (2006), “The Terror State“ (2003) and “Underground Network“ (2001) inspired worldwide audience to engage in the idea of socialism, anti-war movement, as well as the most recent Occupy movement, while they themselves are advocating radical changes, social awareness, freedom of expression, fight against capitalism, war, as well as mindless nationalism, which is the topic of their latest, tenth album “American Spring“,  released last year.

Anti-Flag - Fabled World: https://youtu.be/1sEYvdG1wiM

The music phenomenon known as the Gothenburg Sound (or the Gothenburg Metal Scene) has altered the world of metal music during the 1990s by combining the melodies and riffs of British heavy metal with the elements of death metal, including fast-paced drums and growl vocals. Swedish At The Gates are considered the pioneers of the sound and have been an iconic entity on the scene since they were (re)formed. This summer, they are coming to the Fortress to swing against the audience at Exit’s Explosive Stage!

At The Gates - Death and The Labyrinth: https://youtu.be/hzjshF0TFm8

One of the names that pop up when mentioning the EBM sound is definitely Borghesia, hailing from Ljubljana, Slovenia. The band have been one of the major representatives of the rock movement in the region, alongside Laibach and Pankrti, by starting off a whole new sound unfamiliar to the wider audience at the time. The band were, as many state, ahead of their time in terms of sound back in 1982, calling out for the reaction of the public, until their disbandment in 1995. In 2009, the band reformed, also refreshing their playing style with great new motives and new ideas.

Exit Festival will be held this year from 7 to 10 July at the Petrovaradin Fortress, after which Exit Adventure moves to the Adriatic Sea for the third annual Sea Dance Festival, held from 14 to 16 July. Confirmed acts for Exit Adventure already include Ellie Goulding, Wiz Khalifa, Bastille, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Stormzy, Lost Frequencies, Solomun, Robin Schulz, Nicky Romero, Ms. Dynamite, Zomboy, Wilkinson, Mind Against, Disciples, Dub Pistols, Kensington, FederSam Feldt, DJ Hype, Andy C, Anti-Flag, At The Gates, Cock Sparrer, Modestep – DJ Set, Ivy Lab, Sub Zero, Hernan Cattaneo b2b Henry Saiz, James Zabiela, Borghesia, Tommy Four Seven, Antigone, Francois X and Shlømo.

Dave Clarke Presents Whip It: A new Electro club night at Melkweg

Expect the unexpected with the grand baron of techno, Mister Dave Clarke. The renowned dj and producer is an ever expanding encyclopedia on everything dance related, with ‘Whip It’ being one of his most recent endeavors. The new electro club night is the only one of its kind in the Dutch dance scene and to get the clubbers dancing, Clarke has whipped up a line-up that’ll have electro music lovers cheering. You can expect Dave Clarke himself, as well as a live set by Detroit-based breakbeat-electro-funkduo Aux88, Dj Stingray 313 and Sonic Boom resident Brutuzz!

When a music connoisseur thinks of the name 'Whip It' it might serve as an indicator of what to expect: it's also the title of the famous song from new wave / synthpop band Devo. Whip It is a nod to the song, but also a reference to the snare drum in electro.

As the curator of the 22Tracks electro-channel and as responsible for the groundbreaking 'Electric Boogie' compilation albums, Dave Clarke has always been a pioneer in the world of a genre that has always been rougher than its counterparts.

Says Dave: "Techno is in comparison much more about hedonism. With electric you have to deal more effectively with song structures and have a much more focused bass. Clubbers on electro nights should be more experienced and feeling with a darker sound that has a rich heritage."

On the night, the baron himself will make play a special electro set, but how about AUX88? The Detroit duo has been around since 1993 and has ever since been fixed value within the scene.Their sound is famous; the typical Motor City sound but with a more breakbeat electro-funk feel.Songs like "Play It Loud" and "Break It Down" absolute, bass-heavy bangers that will set the floor ablaze. For Whip It, the duo will do a live set.

And then there's Sherard Ingram AKA half of Urban Tribe AKA DJ Stingray 313. The DJ who rarely without balaclava or other type of mask is seen, but it has always been one of electro's supporting forces. His nickname he got from the legendary James Stinson electro-act Drexciya when Ingram joined the collective on tour. But it is his debut album 'The Collapse Of Modern Culture' at the famous Mo'Wax label that still made the most impression. On the plate Stingray is working with include Anthony Shakir, Moody Mann and Carl Craig and demanding from Detroit succeeded to mix beats with socially critical lyrics. An exceptionally good performance.

And finally, there is a galaxy's more familiar faces to the line-up finish. Sonic Boom resident Brutuzz will do an electro set and thus goes back to his roots as techno and electro bass DJ.

Prior to the clubnight the documentary 'AUX 88: Portrait of an electronic band' will be screened, with a special Q&A with AUX 88 and Dave Clarke by DJ Broadcast editor Eelco Couvreur. More info here: http://on.fb.me/1TxZ4wO

Deeper notes on the Arena on Friday are reserved for a rare act, a "back2back" duo consisting of the Argentinian maestro Hernan Cattaneo together with the Spanish innovator Henry Saiz, preparing all of us, as well as the venue to a state of overload, when the impeccable mix virtuoso, James Zabiela, takes control over the deck! OFF Festival Katowice 2016: House, hip-hop, and hard rock

Get ready for a shot of energy that will keep you going till the summer — or at least until the next round of OFF announcements: GusGus, Brodka, Clutch, Daniel Avery and Flatbush Zombies have confirmed that they’ll be dropping by the festival.

GusGus
They’re from Reykjavik and they know how to have fun. They also know how to get others to have fun: a GusGus concert combines house, trip-hop, techno, and nu-jazz into one big explosive, electro-pop tinged whole, seasoned with the meticulous set design you’d expect from a musical fireworks show of this caliber. “Mexico, it turns out, is a place you definitely want to visit, and maybe, just maybe, you might want to stay there,” reads a PopMatters review of the Icelandic band’s latest album. But putting down roots isn’t the way to go, considering how frequently GusGus like to shapeshift and surprise us: they’re likely to release yet another album, their tenth, before arriving in Katowice. We can’t wait for either event.

Brodka
Brodka can’t stand monotony. Having achieved early success as a teenager, she reinvented herself in 2010 and released the catchy and mature album Granda, only to return two years later with the dance music mini-album LAX. She could have just coasted from there, but instead she decided to change everything, turn it all upside down, and take risks. Her latest album, which she wrote from start to finish and recorded in Los Angeles, is coming out in the spring and is completely different from her earlier work. We’re impressed with her uncompromising attitude and we’re happy that Brodka’s coming to the OFF Festival this summer to play her new music.

Clutch
Gutsy, hard rock riffs, an ironclad rhythm section, and a bluesy feel: this isn’t the combination you’d expect to hear at the OFF Festival, but we just couldn’t ignore a band as rootsy as Clutch. Especially since the quarter-century-old quartet is currently reliving its youth, releasing such phenomenal albums as Earth Rocker (2013) and Psychic Warfare (2015). Their concerts are no-nonsense rock and roll: raw, loud, and effective. We’d like to apologize in advance to the entire neighborhood.

Daniel Avery
Released in 2013 on Erol Alkan’s label Phantasy Sound, Avery’s debut LP was met with wide critical acclaim. One NME reviewer described it as being “in a league of its own,” while Mixmag called it a “hypnotic debut.” “Underground dance music with this much ambition hasn’t been heard in quite a while,” raved Resident Advisor. Compliments were often accompanied by statements of concern: how would Daniel Avery make it in a market driven by rules and trends that he had no intention of abiding by? We now know the answer: he’s doing just fine, performing in the best clubs and at the world’s finest music festivals. We’re happy to welcome him to the OFF Festival.

Flatbush Zombies
Hailing from Brooklyn, Flatbush Zombies are Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick “Arc” Elliott. This New York crew burst onto the scene with their 2012 mixtape D.R.U.G.S. (Death and Reincarnation Under God’s Supervision). Fast-forward a few mixtapes, EPs, and collaborations (alongside such artists as A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, Skepta, and Joey Bada$$), and we’re now dealing with a band whose debut album, 3001: A Laced Odyssey, slated for release in March, is one of the most highly anticipated hip-hop records of the year.

Ellie Goulding joins Wiz Khalifa and Bastille at Exit Festival 2016

Pop superstar Ellie Goulding comes to this year’s Exit Festival to headline the opening night! With more than 17 prominent awards, multi-platinum releases and 3 billion YouTube views, the 29-year-old is considered to be one of the most wanted female performers of today.  Exit’s Main Stage at the colossal 17th century Petrovaradin fortress will echo with some of Ellie’s hottest tracks including "Burn", "Love Me Like You Do", "Lights", "I Need Your Love", "Outside", "Starry Eyed" and many others, against a traditional, grandiose firework display.

House music  royalty and one of the leaders of today's electronic scene, Solomun, returns to Exit Dance Arena on Thursday, 7 July with a much bigger status on the world scene compared to his debut at Exit in 2010. He was named Best DJ and Producer of the Year at the DJ Awards, while he is currently working on his theme night "Solomun +1". One of the unofficial kings of Ibiza has been standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Richie Hawtin (Enter) and Marco Carola (MusicOn), and is also the proud owner of his "Diynamic" label, as well as the well-respected alternative label "2DIY4".

The Dance Arena on Saturday night has been one of Exit Festival’s monumental moments for a long time now, a time when a full-blown swarm of cheerful visitors goes home after the Sun had long ago reached an impressive altitude. This year too, the biggest dancefloor in this corner of the world welcomes some of the hottest electronic acts. German superstar Robin Schulz brings some of the biggest hits of the decade which earned him high ranking chart placement and performances at clubs all around the world. Schulz will be joined on the same evening by David Guetta’s protégé, Dutch DJ, producer and Protocol recording label owner, Nicky Romero, who has been named one of the world’s best DJs by DJ Mag! He has won an MTV EMA award for the Best Dutch Act and he is one of Ibiza’s biggest clubs residents. Also performing on the same night will be Sam Feldt, who reached his peak with the hit “Show Me Love“ that ranked high on most of the European charts in the last few years. Hadrien Federiconi, also known as Feder completes the list of deep house giants for Saturday’s Dance Arena lineup. The winner of “Best New French DJ“ award at NRJ DJ Awards had his breakthrough in the world of deep house with his incredible remix of Rodriguez’s song “Sixto“, after which he released “Goodbye“ that hit number one on iTunes charts all across Europe

No Sleep Novi Sad, the second biggest electronic music stage of Exit Festival will be presenting its new program concept with some of the biggest world clubs and labels next summer during four festival nights behind the famous tunnel leading away from Dance Arena. The first to confirm their presence at Exit Festival is the Parisian club Concrete, who will host their non-stop party on Saturday, 9 July. The show will be headlined by techno wunderkind, the star of a new generation Tommy Four Seven, followed by the leading Concrete residents and current leaders of the Paris techno scene, Antigone and Francois X, as well as one of the rising stars Shlømo who will bring his intense live performance to the No Sleep Stage!

Performances at the magical Exit Adventure 2016, including Exit (7-10th July 2016) and Sea Dance (14-16th July 2016) have been confirmed by the biggest hip-hop star currently in the world, Wiz Khalifa, indie rock sensation Bastille, one of Europe's most wanted rappers Stormzy, Belgian hitmaker Lost Frequencies, cult-status music collective Dub Pistols and the most wanted Dutch band Kensington. They are followed by an impressive list of bass performers from Petrovaradin to Jaz Beach, the first ones among them being the fathers of their genre, drum’n’bass champions DJ Hype and Andy C, together with some of the biggest dubstep stars Modestep and Zomboy. They will be joined by the most prominent names of this generation, Wilkinson, Ivy Lab and Sub Zero, whereas a special slot in the Main Stage program is reserved for the amazing Ms. Dynamite.

30 years strong, Eurosonic Noorderslag still at the forefront of European Music

Last night the four day birthday party of 30 year old Eurosonic Noorderslag ended in the city of Groningen, The Netherlands. Taking place from 13th  - 16th January, the European Music Platform stayed true to its ethos of stimulating the circulation of European Music by showcasing 345 European acts, among which 34 were from the 14 countries within the CEE focus region. During the day 4,124 international professionals from 40 countries participated in the Eurosonic Noorderslag conference and European Production Innovation Conference (EPIC) in order to network and discuss all the latest developments in the European music industry.

Founder and creative director Peter Smidt is proudly looking back at 30 successful years of Eurosonic Noorderslag. “In 30 years time the European and the Dutch music sector have grown immensely as well in quantity as quality.”

Breaking Borders
Eurosonic Noorderslag kicked off on Wednesday evening with the European Border Breakers Awards. This award ceremony was opened by the European Commission's First Vice-President Frans Timmermans, who also presented the EBBA Public Choice Award to the Latvian band Carnival Youth.

On Thursday January 14 Eurosonic Noorderslag, in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union and with the support of the European Commission, launched the European Border Breakers Charts. This weekly set of airplay-based charts will monitor new European artists who are receiving radio airplay outside of their country of origin.

Festivals and European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP)
In 43 venues in the city of Groningen 345 promising acts presented themselves to an audience of music professionals and other music lovers. At the conference today the ETEP festivals presented their first selection of acts to be booked for their upcoming events. The acts with the most mentions were: Blossoms (UK), Dubioza Kolektiv (BA), Nao (UK), John Coffey (NL) and Liima (DK/FI).

Christoph Hubert of Yourope:
“Last year we asked all European festival members of Yourope, which new acts were highlights from last years festival season. The list consisted of 85% of acts that played at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2015.”

Conferences
During the conference of Eurosonic Noorderslag the present state of the European music industry was covered from several perspectives. The European Production Innovation Conference (EPIC) handled relevant topics such as safety, sustainability, sound pollution and productional innovations. Buma Music meets Tech featured high profile keynote speakers and dealt with topics such as video content, video streaming services, start-ups in tech and music and the highly promising Blockchain system.

Media
The anniversary edition also gained huge attention in the media. The showcase festival and conference was attended by 425 journalists from all over the world. Due to the partnership of the European Broadcasting Union 37 public radio stations from Europe participated in the event. The festival was covered by public radio stations from 10 countries, making 20 live broadcasts with a total of 20 hours. The EBBA show will be broadcast by a proximally 15 European publication television stations.

Focus 2017
Next years edition of Eurosonic Noorderslag will focus on music from Portugal.
Sais Nuno Saraiva from WHY Portugal: “Being focus country at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2017 is the best opportunity to bridge the gap between the new music made in Portugal and other new music markets, introducing the wealth of musical genres currently made in Portugal to a much wider audience.”

Crans-Montana Calling! Caprices festival announce more unmissable artists

From 7 to 10 April, Caprices 2016 will transform Crans-Montana into an unmissable destination in the world of electronic music.

Maceo Plex, Tale of Us, Ricardo Villalobos, Âme, Rødhåd, Sven Väth, Jamie Jones, Mind Against and many more. From 7 to 10 April 2016, the 13th Caprices festival will call together leading artists from the world of electronic music. With over half of Caprices' 30 or so artists ranked amongst the top 30 by Resident Advisor in 2015, the Crans-Montana festival is set to be one of Europe's must-see events of the year for discerning clubbers.

Bringing together big names and innovative, high-profile artists, Caprices will whip up the crowds at the Valais ski station for four days and nights.

The festival will begin on Thursday, 7 April. Head to The Moon for Nina Kraviz, Magda, KiNK, DJ Tennis and Kūn. Ranked number 1 in Resident Advisor's top 20 live acts, Bulagrian artist KiNK will open the 13th Caprices Festival. "The Moon will start with one of the best live acts that I've had chance to experience. It was extremely important for us to include him," explains Maxime Léonard, director of Caprices. "KiNK's theatrical performance is so entrancing through his interaction with the audience that it's sure to be a feast for the ears and eyes of every night owl at the Moon from the very first evening,". The Moon Room, set up at the bottom of the slopes especially for the festival, is once again destined to be the meeting place for every clubber intending to dance the night away.

From 12:00 pm on Friday, 8 April, ascend to 2208-m altitude to the Violettes cable car departure station in the Barzettes car park and dance to the tunes of Jamie Jones, The Martinez Brothers and Nastia on the MDRNTY stage. Together with the festival’s other star attraction, the breath-taking views over the Alpine mountain range that stretches from Cervin to Mont Blanc, Caprices offers clubbers a mind-blowing experience combining visual and sound sensations in one unique setting.

Come nightfall, a quick cable car ride will transport you straight to the Moon's dance floor, for what is expected to be an unforgettable evening: Tale of Us, Âme, Rødhåd, Recondite, Mind Against and Michel Cleis. "An impressive line up with no less than four artists from Resident Advisor's top 10," exclaims Maxime Léonard. "Those who come to Crans-Montana to party with friends are sure to be carried away into the early hours of the morning."

There's no time to get bored; you'll have to make your way back up to the peaks for Saturday 9 April to hear Ricardo Villalobos, Raresh and Preslea. Exiled to Berlin and a Crans-Montana regular, Chilean native Ricardo Villalobos will make his 11th appearance at the Caprices Festival. His innate sense for breaking the laws of time and endless creativity make each of his sets a truly unforgettable experience! Return to the station for the Cocoon Night showcasing Sven Väth. Alongside this artist, Maceo Plex, Eats Everything, Ilario Alicante and Tim Green will go all out in combination with a spectacular visual show for which only the Cocoon label holds the secret. "Sven Väth brought the 2015 Caprices festival to a close on the MDRNTY stage with his incredible mix in bright, sunny weather," recalls the Caprices director. "As electronic music's inspiration for more than three decades, he will take his place behind the Moon's turntables for a monumental evening that will also see the likes of American DJ and producer in great demand, Maceo Plex." Ranked number 2 in Resident Advisor's 2015 list, Maceo Plex will immerse Caprices in his world full of emotion and energy.

For the last day of the 13th edition of Caprices Festival, Guy Gerber, Mathew Johnson, Stimming and Ryan Crosson will run the show on MDRNTY’s stage in one final afternoon of music on the slopes. "This will be your last chance to enjoy the incredible views to the sounds produced by the best of the best in electronic music," concludes Maxime Léonard. But there's one last surprise before Caprices draws to a close: Swiss artists Adolpho & Franky, Nicolas Duvoisin and Alci will take to the Moon stage for one night free of charge from 6:00 pm to midnight.

Following the success of ‘Off’ festival parties in previous years, Caprices has since expanded. Although still stationed in the main street of Crans-Montana, this third stage will host an eclectic programme that pays tribute to Swiss culture. There will be an array of activities and food stalls open to a broad audience of all ages.

Caprices is a four-day festival that takes place on three different stages positioned on both the top and bottom of the slopes. This is set to be a tremendous electronic line up against the backdrop of a strikingly beautiful Alpine setting that promises to be a unique experience. From 7 to 10 April 2016 in Crans-Montana; don’t miss it.
