Eurosonic Noorderslag presents European Borders Breakers Charts

The European Music Platform, Eurosonic Noorderslag, is launching, in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union and with the support of the European Commission, the European Border Breakers Charts. This weekly set of airplay-based charts will monitor new European artists who are enjoying radio airplay outside of their country of origin.

The European Border Breakers Charts will be launched on January 14 at Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen, The Netherlands. These charts are an extension of the European Border Breakers Awards, which are awarded to European artists whose first international album experienced the greatest cross-border success across the European Union. The airplay is monitored by Radiomonitor from a panel consisting of 48 stations from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) across 32 countries.

Artists/tracks who qualify for the charts must meet the following requirements:

  • Emerging European acts only (artists with a maximum of one international album release)
  • Only European airplay outside their home country is taken into account
  • Only tracks that are a maximum of two years old

The charts are published each Friday since January 1, 2016 on a dedicated website (www.europeanborderbreakerscharts.eu). From off January 18 the charts also will appear on the websites of media partners such as Music Week, the leading music trade publication in Europe, German trade magazine Musikmarkt and Entertainment Business in The Netherlands.

Peter Smidt, Creative Director of Eurosonic Noorderslag, commented:
“As the hosts of the European Border Breakers Awards, this is a really exciting new tool for us. We all know how difficult it is for new talent to break through. We believe that these charts and the sub charts will help everyone to discover border breaking European talent in an early stage. The European Border Breakers Charts will provide very valuable information to labels, publishers, bookers, journalists, broadcasters and consumers alike. We are very proud to count Music Week and Musikmarkt already as our partners in this ambitious project. We hope lots of journalists, radio stations and publications will follow”

Dave Roberts, publisher of Music Week:
"New artists with the potential to break out internationally are the lifeblood of the industry, and so to monitor their progress in a regular and methodical manner is a fascinating and important development. We look forward to seeing this chart every week and, of course, to sharing its insights with the rest of the industry at musicweek.com"

Laurent Marceau, in charge of Pop Music at the European Broadcasting Union says:
"The European pop music scene is absolutely buzzing these days and "border breakers" have become something to be reckoned with on the music and media landscapes. The European Border Breakers Charts will be a great tool for professionals and provide great information to music professionals, thereby helping the circulation of emerging and promising acts from all corners of Europe."

Facts on the European Border Breakers Charts:
The European Border Breakers Charts are based on airplay monitored by British radio airplay specialists Radiomonitor, from a panel consisting of 48 stations from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) across 32 countries.

Artists/tracks who qualify for the charts must meet the following requirements:

  • Emerging European acts only (artists with a maximum of one international album release)
  • Only European airplay outside their home country is taken into account
  • Only tracks that are a maximum of two years old

The various charts are:

  • The Top 100 European Border Breakers Chart, listing the songs that have achieved the most airplay outside of the country of origin of the artists and a set of Top 10 sub charts, highlighting interesting developments within the chart (and outside):
  • Top 10 new entries in the Top 100
  • Top 10 tracks bubbling under the Top 100 (ranked by country, with only the highest climber per country under the Top 100 taken into account)
  • Top 10 top tracks per country (featuring only the highest charting track per country)
  • Top 10 ETEP artists (a monthly chart, based on the number of ETEP festivals selected artists played outside of their country of origin in the month before publication)

The airplay charts are based on impact rather than plays. Tracks are ranked according to the number of people reached by the stations playing the songs. The methodology of the charts was put together by journalist Emmanuel Legrand, co-founder of the EBBAs, and music industry consultant Werner Schlosser.

Robin Schulz, Nicky Romero, Solomun and Concrete DJs join EXIT Festival Line Up

Saturday’s at the Dance Arena have always been one of Exit Festival’s defining monuments, a time when a full-blown swarm of cheerful visitors go home after the sun had long ago reached an impressive altitude. This year will be no exception as the biggest dancefloor in this corner of the world welcomes some of the hottest electronic acts.

German superstar Robin Schulz brings some of the biggest dancefloor hits of the decade which earned him high ranking chart placement, performances at world’s leading festivals as well as clubs all around the world. This year saw his latest album “Sugar”, that includes collaborations with a large number of prominent names, e.g. Moby, J.U.D.G.E, Ilsey, soFLY, Graham Candy, Akon, DJ Moguai – just to name a few, as well as a Grammy nomination. Schulz will be performing at Exit’s Dance Arena on Saturday, 9 July. He will be joined on the same evening by David Guetta’s protégé, Dutch DJ, producer and Protocol recording label owner, Nicky Romero, who has been named one of the world’s best DJs by DJ Mag! He has won an MTV EMA award for the Best Dutch Act and he is one of Ibiza’s biggest clubs resident, headliner to some of the leading world festivals, including Tomorrowland and Ultra.

Sam Feldt has reached his peak with the hit “Show Me Love“ that ranked high on most of the European charts in the last few years. Feldt continues his success frenzy with hits such as “Midnight Hearts“, at the same time sharing the stage with some of the biggest DJ names: Kygo, Robin Schulz, Thomas Jack, Alle Farben, Kölsch. Hadrien Federiconi, also known as Feder completes the list of deep house giants for this year’s Dance Arena. The winner of “Best New French DJ“ award at NRJ DJ Awards had his breakthrough in the world of deep house with his incredible remix of Rodriguez’s song “Sixto“, after which he released “Goodbye“ that hit number one on iTunes.

House music royalty and one of the leaders of today's electronic scene, Solomun, returns to Exit Dance Arena on Thursday, 7 July with a much bigger status on the world scene compared to his debut at Exit in 2010. He was named Best DJ and Producer of the Year at DJ Awards, while he is currently working on his theme night "Solomun +1". One of the unofficial kings of Ibiza has been standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Richie Hawtin (Enter) and Marco Carola (MusicOn), and is also the proud owner of his "Diynamic" label, as well as the well-respected alternative label "2DIY4".

No Sleep Novi Sad, the second biggest electronic music stage of Exit Festival will be presenting its new program concept with some of the biggest world clubs and labels next summer during four festival nights behind the famous tunnel leading away from Dance Arena. The first club to confirm their presence at Exit Festival is the Paris based boat party Concrete, who will host their non-stop party on Saturday, 9 July. The show will be headlined by techno wunderkind, the star of a new generation Tommy Four Seven, followed by the leading Concrete residents and current leaders of the Paris techno scene, Antigone and Francois X, as well as one of the rising stars Shlømo who will bring his intense live performance to the No Sleep Stage!

Tommy Four Seven is a British producer that moved to Berlin in 2008, and in a short while established himself as one of the leading representatives of the ultimate and very competitive techno scene. Antigone is considered the leader of the French avant-garde techno scene that is once again on the rise. "Forbidden Work", released for the Construct Re-Form label, together with "Menace of the Species", and "Astral Traveller" have attracted the attention of some of the most important names, securing him a residency at Concrete. Francois X is a world-renowned DJ and producer, and one of the key factors of the French electronic scene. Francois X has been the leading resident of Concrete, alongside having a regular spot at Berghain and Fabric. His “Paris Boiler Room” mix is considered one of the best mixes from the venue. Shlømo is the youngest Concrete resident that will be performing on Saturday at the NSNS Stage. He founded Taapion Records in 2013, which featured names such as Birth of Frequency, Roman Poncet and Francois X. He became a part of the Concrete collective not very long ago, on 25 October, on the club’s 4th birthday; a party which is still being talked about after going on for three days and nights non-stop.

OFF Festival Katowice 2016: OFF WE GO!

After an amazing 10th anniversary edition we’re pleased to announce that the 11th OFF Festival Katowice will take place August 5–7, 2016, and will feature Napalm Death, Sealford Mods, Machinedrum, Beach Slang and more. Early bird priced passes are now on sale!

Instead of giving into the fall-winter blues, why not start planning your summer adventures now? Instead of giving your friends and family another reindeer sweater for Christmas, why not get them an OFF Festival Katowice pass? Like every year, we’re offering you three days and three nights of the best music in excellent company, with performances by furious Napalm Death, the painfully honest Sleaford Mods, visionary Machinedrum and cheerfully ear-splitting Beach Slang, from August 5 to 7.

OFF Festival Katowice 2016 passes are now on sale and are available at the reduced price of 230 złoty until February 29. For the first three weeks of ticket sales, the Early OFF special offer is available to our regular guests registered at the OFF Shop www.offshop.pl.

We realize that our audience needs no introduction to the artists we’ve invited, but just for old time’s sake, here it is:

Napalm Death
These grindcore pioneers have spent the last 36 years on the avant-garde wing of an already extreme genre. Their excellent 2015 LP, Apex Predator — Easy Meat, and their previous release, Utilitarian, featuring a guest appearance by John Zorn, testify to the fact the band is still in peak artistic form. But they’ve admittedly had plenty of fuel to drive their rage: the brutal, relentless sound of Napalm Death is no accident. It’s their weapon against social inequality, the corrupt world of politics and the predatory endeavors of multinational corporations. We’re looking forward to seeing them wage another battle in Katowice.

Sleaford Mods
What do you call music made in the most wretched neighborhoods of English cities, forsaken by both god and the government? A forty year old would tell you it’s punk rock. Someone from the younger generation would call it hip hop. Both would show up at a Sleaford Mods gig. This Nottingham duo is captivating in its eclecticism: who says you can’t combine the Wu-Tang Clan, Guns N’ Roses, rave and black metal on a single album? These guys embody the zeitgeist: nowadays music is made the same way it’s listened to. Sleaford Mods’ added value lies in their discerning eye and their frustration and anger. If you’re wondering why they’ve been such a hit, the answer is simple: the band’s gritty minimalism is 100% real.

Machinedrum
Travis Stewart, known to the world as Machinedrum, rose to fame as a producer for his work alongside Azealia Banks and Jamie Liddel. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This Berlin-based American’s musical output is impressive both in terms of quantity (which is hard to calculate, considering the myriad configurations and names he’s worked under, but Sepalcure is one act you can’t miss!) and quality. Suffice it to mention the excellent album Vapor City and the follow-up LP Vapor City Archives, on Ninja Tune.

Beach Slang
With bands like Beach Slang still around, it’s hard to lose your faith in rock’n’roll. This Pennsylvania quartet’s unpretentious punk rock hymns have to be listened to at full blast, preferably while screaming along with the vocalist. If you see them live, you have to get sweaty, and you have to identify with their witty yet uncomplicated lyrics (“Too young to die, too late to die young”). It’s funny that the title of their full-length debut, released in the fall of 2015, is The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us: all you really have to do is come to Katowice. OFF you go, Beach Slang!

European Festival Awards Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented to Jean-Louis Brossard and Béatrice Macé from Les Trans Musicales (France)

Honour will be presented amongst a host of awards from Best Major Festival to Headline Performance Of The Year and many more in Groningen, The Netherlands

On Wednesday 13th January 2016 the annual European Festival Awards will see one of France’s most distinguished event organising duos receive the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, presented by Yourope.

Jean-Louis Brossard and Béatrice Macé have been the driving forces behind Les Rencontres Trans Musicales throughout its rich 36 year history – a festival that set out to support local performing artists in its hometown of Rennes in France and ended up enriching the musical landscape of the entire country, attracting such artists as Lenny Kravitz, Ben Harper, Björk, Daft Punk, Too Many DJ’s, Stromae, Jungle, Kate Tempest to make their first appearances in France.

Today Les Trans shines as one of Europe’s most important and vibrant international showcase festivals. The dust is still settling on this year’s epic edition which took place across 5 days from 2nd to 6th December with over 55,000 people watching over 130 performances by artists from more than 20 countries.

As well as running the annual festival, the Association Trans Musicales, led by Jean-Louis and Béatrice, also manages the Ubu venue, a leading proponent in Rennes’ music scene which helps to develop original new talent and celebrates cultural diversity.

Steve Jenner, Festival Awards Director and Co-Founder comments: “New talent is the lifeblood of the live music industry. Through Les Trans Musicales, Jean-Louis and Béatrice have 37 years of their lives promoting it and Europe’s musical landscape is all the richer as a result. We are extremely proud to put a spotlight of recognition on this pair of heroes to the live music industry. This award is overdue.

Jean-Louis Brossard says: “When Les Trans were born in 1979, we couldn't imagine dedicating our entire lives and careers to the festival. 37 years later, that's what we actually did. We would like to thank the jury for this remarkable recognition. It is an honor to us as well as les Trans and we will share this fruitful pleasure of a well-achieved job with the whole team.”

Béatrice Macé adds: “When we got the email announcing that we would receive the Yourope Lifetime Achievement Award, we were really surprised and it left us speechless for a while. We didn't ask for it. This is why it has a special value and it means a lot to us!”

The EUROPEAN FESTIVAL AWARDS, presented in association with YOUROPE and Eurosonic Noorderslag, will return in the New Year to celebrate the successes of Europe’s music festival industry. The gala award show will open Eurosonic Noorderslag in style on Wednesday 13th January 2015 at De Oosterpoort in Groningen, The Netherlands.

Throughout the evening titles spanning from ‘Best Major Festival’, ‘Artists’ Favourite Festival’, ‘Promoter Of The Year’ to ‘Anthem Of The Summer’ will be handed out to the great and good of the festival world.

Decided by a combination of public vote and industry juries, the European Festival Awards are the only pan-European body solely dedicated to recognising the contributions and achievements of the event organisers and performing artists that generate billions of Euros for local economies and brighten up the summer for tens of millions of festival-goers each year.

This year’s European Festival Awards featured over 350 festivals from 50 different European countries, with over 800,000 votes cast.

Tickets to the event are on-sale now at eu.festivalawards.com/buy-tickets
