European Festival Awards Announce Shortlists

The votes have been counted and we can now reveal the finalists in this year’s European Festival Awards. This year – the 7th edition - saw over 800,000 votes cast by fans from 50 different European countries for their favourite festivals and artists.

The public-voted accolades saw music festivals of all shapes and sizes competing for titles including the Best Major, Medium, Small, New and Indoor Festivals as well as the Line-Up Of The Year. The titles for artists include Headliner Of The Year, Best Newcomer and Anthem Of The Year.

New Stereo Mc’s Feat. Terranova Connected EP

This EP marks the debut release on Connected – a new label based between Brixton and Berlin… run by Terranova and Stereo Mc’s – distributed by Kompakt Records

Available both digitally and on vinyl, the EP follows on from their much acclaimed collaboration, “Tell me Why” (released earlier in 2015) and comes ahead of a highly anticipated album.

About the EP:
Opening cut ‘Deeper’ is aimed squarely at the dance floor with its rugged, grainy see-sawing bass and spooky spoken word vocals (which were actually recorded at a live set in the club earlier this year). Icy hi hats and coarse claps add to the mix as the unending, angsty groove rolls on and on, sucking you ever deeper in to its darkly seductive core. A belief in capturing the moment is put before recording regulations here – Terranova working the sound with a unique combination of computer and vintage studio outboard technology from 50’s valve compressors and mixer , to 70s analog and 80s digital outboard & effects.

On the flip, ‘Turnaround’ is a kinetic and hypnotic roller that pairs flying pitchshifted /harmonized rim shot orgies with a deep vocal performance on fluid heavy grooves. An urban, reflective sense of melody also litters the tune as Rob’s psychedelic vocal on ‘Turnaround’ (recorded on an iPhone while taking a shower!) adds a sense of intrigue and menace. This is a fulsome, hugely absorbing cut that will send out in any set.. The vinyl version of this release features a bonus mix picking up on original House 12” Traditions by re-introducing the lost art of acappella versions— ‘Turnaround (acapella)’ will be of great use to DJs who want to get hands in the air.

The Connected 002 release is another carefully considered package that gets the best out of both parties and makes it obvious why Terranova and Stereo MCs have been so close for so long.

“Big Fan of Terranova, great collaboration with the MC’s” Joris Voorn

“I’m lovin’ this!” Tiefschwarz

“These new Stereo MC’s tunes are massive! Love it” Dave Seaman

“Turnaround sounds SICK!” Reboot

“WORD! This is on point!” Hector Romero

2016 European Border Breakers Award for Seinabo Sey

Swedish songwriter Seinabo Sey was unveiled this evening as the seventh winner of the 2016 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA), the European music awards for emerging artists. The announcement was made during the Kulturnyheterna show on national television.

Seinabo Sey became a household name when Kygo's remix of her song ‘Younger’ became a viral hit. The Stockholm-based pop phenomenon, known for her powerful voice and captivating stage presence, inherited her immense talent from her father, West African musician Maudo Sey.

Initially influenced by the likes of Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys, Seinabo has developed her very own R&B /electro sound. Her much-anticipated debut LP Pretend was an instant success after being released in October and she has just announced a European tour in early 2016, with dates in Scandinavia, Finland, Germany, France, UK, Belgium and Switzerland.

Seinabo, who grew up in Södermalm and Halmstad, had academic aspirations but moved to the Swedish capital at 16 to attend a music school programme at Fryshusets. In an interview she recalled: "I was really academically tracked... I tried to push away the whole music dream and thought I had to do something more in line with that, like becoming a lawyer or something. But then I realised I couldn’t really [do that] so I moved to Stockholm.”

Background
The winners are selected on the basis of data from Nielsen Music Control research, the European Broadcasting Union, EBU radio stations, and from festivals participating in the European Talent Exchange Programme.

The winners will receive their awards in a ceremony hosted by TV personality and musician Jools Holland at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in Groningen, Netherlands, on January 13, 2016. The ceremony will feature performances of the winning acts.

One of the winners will receive a Public Choice Award based on votes cast on the EBBA website from December 1, 2015 until January 1, 2016. Up to 15 voters, chosen at random from different countries, will be invited to the award ceremony: each will be able to bring a friend and the prize includes their flight and hotel costs.

The EBBA, now in their 13th year, is organised by Eurosonic Noorderslag in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), with support from Buma Cultuur, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Province of Groningen, the City of Groningen and Music Week.

SOAK announced as winner of 2016 European Border Breakers Awards

This morning, at RTÉ in Dublin, the Irish artist SOAK was announced as the sixth winner of the 2016 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA), the European music awards for emerging artists.

SOAK is the alter ego of singer-songwriter Bridie Monds-Watson. She is only 19 but she already knows what she wants in life: to make music. She was barely out of school when she released her acclaimed debut album, ‘Before We Forget How To Dream’ through the music label Rough Trade. Despite her age, SOAK radiates maturity on a collection which showcases the beauty of her intimate, folk-tinged vocals.

‘Before We Forgot How to Dream’ is a snapshot of SOAK’s formative years, growing up in Northern Ireland, touching on themes of isolation, the joys and fears of adolescence, family troubles and the future. Already compared with the likes of Laura Marling and Beach House, SOAK has been a rising star in her hometown of Derry since the age of 14.

Long-term success already seems assured: as well as performing solo at venues including London’s Union Chapel, she has recently toured with indie folk act Bombay Bicycle Club, collaborated with Scottish electronic band Chvrches, and has also been nominated for the 2015 Mercury Prize for album of the year in the UK and Ireland.

Earlier this month Carnival Youth (Latvia), AURORA (Norway, Oscar and The Wolf (Belgium), KOVACS (Netherlands) and Alvaro Soler (Spain) were unveiled as 2016 EBBA winners. Four more winners across Europe will be announced and filmed in the coming weeks. The footage will form part of a unique ‘road-trip’ mini-movie, which will be shared via the EBBA social media account and website.

The EBBA are about breaking down borders and recognising emerging European rock, pop and dance artists who achieved success in countries other than their own. These unique European music awards are funded under the European Union (EU) Creative Europe programme. With the EBBA, the European Union wishes to highlight the success of 10 debuting European artists in selling albums and touring outside their home territory.

From Adele (2009) to Milky Chance (2015), the winners of the EBBA represent the full breadth of European talent and diversity. Other previous winners include Stromae, Emeli Sandé, Gabriel Rios, Hozier, Melanie De Biasio, Of Monsters and Men, Woodkid, Mumford & Sons, Caro Emerald, Lykke Li, Disclosure, Katie Melua, John Newman, The Ting Tings, C2C, Tokio Hotel, The Script, Zaz, Nico & Vinz, Saybia, Damien Rice, KT Tunstall, Alphabeat, Milow and Afrojack.

Europe's cultural and linguistic diversity is a strong part of its cultural appeal, but linguistic barriers sometimes make it harder for artists to work internationally and achieve cross-border sales success. The EBBA seek to help them overcome these obstacles.

To be eligible for the 2016 awards, the artists must have achieved border-breaking success with their first international release in Europe between 1 August 2014 and 31 July 2015.

One of the winners will receive a Public Choice Award based on votes cast on the EBBA website from the end of November to Christmas.

Octave One present Jazzo Reworks

With Octave One’s latest and great album, Burn It Down, still making a big impact on dance floors worldwide, the time has come for a top team of remixers to add their own spin on one of the tracks from it. That track is ‘Jazzo/Lose Myself’ and the remixers are Paul Woolford and Mat Playford, whilst new dubs and instrumental mixes are also included on this essential package.

Detroit’s Burden brothers Octave One are known around the world for their compelling live sets and have been for decades. That latest album was another broad proposition full of many analogue house and techno styles. The track that gets remixed here actually features vocals from Ann Sanderson, who also sung on Octave One’s multi-million selling hit, ‘Blackwater,’ so it has a nice sense of history to it.

Paul Woolford is first to go and is someone who has been turning out left of centre house and techno cuts on labels like Hotflush, Cocoon and Planet E For years. The Leeds based producer has a real understanding of his studio gear and always pack a real punch. That was never more evident that on this remix, which came about as Paul has said before that Octave One have been a huge influence on him. “My intention was to bring out the soulful edge of Octave One's sound and place it within the framework of a track that would work towards the end of the night." The result is a fresh and dynamic cut with rumbling bass, well treated vocal cut ups and a magnificent strong section that will have everyone reaching for the lasers.

Next up is Mat Playford, someone who has being doing his own thing for ten years plus on labels like Intimacy, Skint and his own Social Problem. As well as this he is a resident DJ and remixer for the much loved Hard Times crew and is a regard at places like We Love… in Ibiza. His rework is deep and melodic, with fat synth lines and smeared chords all adding up to a colourful and intense techno stomper, complete with joyous strings, for the peak time in the night.

As well as the original and an InstruDub from the 2014 vinyl release, this new digital package also includes the feel good, soul infused and party starting Ocapella version for DJs to use at their leisure. As such, this remix package is one everyone needs in their bag.

About EXIT:
EXIT started off humbly but bravely back in 2000 when it was a student movement fighting for freedom and democracy in Serbia. Evolving from the student protests of 2000, the expression of rebellious spirit of young people in Serbia and fighting for political change and freedom. In addition, EXIT has played a vital role in bringing together the new nations of former Yugoslavia, war-torn by the events at the end of last century. It is the social importance of the Festival that made it unique and globally recognized.

EXIT is a non-corporate event with a unique history, proving that music is a universal language that can connect and bring people together to make the world a better place. EXIT is more than just a music festival, where hedonism meets activism as EXIT continues to evolve and bring like-minded people together. Exit also supports many community and humanitarian missions.

Today, EXIT is globally acknowledged as one of the most popular European music festivals winning the highly coveted title of ‘Best Major Festival’ at the 2014 European Festival Awards and reflects how EXIT has grown over the years attracting a global audience of 2.5 million visitors from 60 different countries. What was once a movement is now one of the most prestigious music events in the world!
