Groningen and Seattle connected by music at ESNS23

Now confirmed: Keynote interview with founders of legendary grunge label Sub Pop, Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt at ESNS Conference and the Live on KEXP sessions during ESNS Festival.

Groningen and Seattle, December 1st: The two cultural hotspots on their respective continents may be 8,000 kilometers apart, but they are closer than you might think when it comes to music. The ESNS23 announcement of an exclusive keynote interview with Sub Pop founders Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman by music journalist Everett True and Live on KEXP sessions underpins the fact that music lies at the heart of the connection between these seemingly faraway cities. And you can experience all this first-hand at ESNS 2023.

Sub Pop keynote at ESNS Conference

One of the highlights of the ESNS Conference is the exclusive keynote interview with Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt, the two founders of the legendary Sub Pop Label. The Seattle record label signed bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney, being key players in the heyday of the grunge movement. In 1995, the owners of Sub Pop sold a 49% stake of the label to the Warner Music Group. Music journalist Everett True will dive deep into this story, an area of expertise for True since he followed the emerging grunge scene from its earliest moments in the late eighties.

KEXP live sessions at ESNS Festival

Based in Seattle and with a shared focus on championing music from all around the globe,

non-profit music organization KEXP has confirmed its attendance at ESNS 2023. The international radio station will host a number of its globally popular sessions during the festival from the legendary venue Vera, with exclusive performances and interviews from emerging and established artists. Stay tuned for programme announcements.

NTIA & AFEM Say New Report Shows Government Underestimates True Value of Club Culture in the UK

With recent reports stating that 1 in 3 Nightclubs are at risk of closing in the coming months, the NTIA and AFEM are concerned that the UK faces losing the world-renowned club network, the breeding ground for the artists, DJs, and entrepreneurs which shape this amazing movement.

The pandemic has shown that the Government does not recognise the importance of the sector, and has limited knowledge of its value, particularly its value outside of simple economics, but Electronic Music and Club Culture in the UK also has community and cultural importance as this new report shows.

Dance music shapes our communities and our culture across the UK. Clubs and festivals improve the health, well-being, friendship and happiness of millions, year in year out. They are positive, unifying and inspiring forces in an increasingly divided world.

The creativity of the scene powers every corner of popular culture. Whether they’re gloomily-lit dark rooms or flamboyant, otherworldly fantasylands - clubs have become an increasingly fundamental part of modern social infrastructure.

Night Time Culture Economy accounts for 1.6% of GDP – or £36.4 billion – and 425,000 jobs across the UK.

These quantified benefits are often presented when urging the wider public to tolerate what some only perceive as noise-polluting local venues. However, nightlife’s contribution to the UK economy far exceeds the revenue it generates, and is significantly underestimated by the UK Government in its lack of consideration and direct support.

By focusing exclusively on their commercial value, the Government and key stakeholders overlook both the roles individual clubs play within their local communities and the broader socioeconomic context within which nightlife operates.

Electronic Music and clubs have been self-sufficient for the best part of 40 years, steering clear of conformity or politicization, the industry was purely about the music and creativity and galvanizing communities.

The report below quantifies the community and cultural importance of Electronic Music and Club Culture in the UK. https://www.dropbox.com/s/z9jhw4ipypuz8bn/Dance%20Music%27s%20Impact%20on%20Communities%20and%20Culture.pdf?dl=0

Michael Kill CEO NTIA says
“Dance music and clubs drive culture to the heart of communities - from the lone teenager listening to beats on a laptop in a bedroom, to groups of kids on an estate spitting lyrics and bars over an electro beat from the 1980s on a mobile phone, to the soul, jazz and funk instrumentals that underpin modern productions.”

“Electronic Dance music has inspired millions of people, and given them a hunger to dig deeper into music heritage to find new sounds, a new rhythm to listen to, create and produce. Reaching people from all walks of life, without prejudice or bias, crossing cultural boundaries and creating pathways for expression.”

“Aided by this report, wider society will grow to recognise electronic music and club culture as one of the most important economic and cultural movements of the future."

Silvia Montello CEO AFEM says
“Those of us who live and breathe dance music have always known the incredible community value that club and rave culture has brought to our lives and our global audiences.”

“It is great to see the collection of academic evidence of these benefits outlined clearly in a report, which can contribute towards a broader understanding of the importance of our music and scene to millions of people, alongside the clearly defined commercial and economic benefits. “

“The need to dance, to express, to commune and to build friendships that know no
barriers of race, class, gender or creed are fundamental.”

Yousef DJ - Circus says
“Dance music is the most significant cultural shift since the dawn of roll & roll. In the 1950s guitar heroes began blending black gospel, soul and juke joints, by the 1980s, DJs were blending disco with drum machines in warehouses, and both genres fought for their own expression beyond oppression.”

“In the subsequent decades, dance music has overtaken rock & roll as a popular form of youth culture, because it’s more spontaneous, more economical, more accessible and available to everyone, whether as a dancer or a producer, a DJ or a promoter. Nothing in musical history has ever been as easily accessible to so many people, making it one of the more important new global industries of the 20th century.”

Leigh Morgan b:electronic says
“The contribution of electronic music to communities and the wider cultural landscape globally should not be underestimated.”

“Powered by artists, DJs, labels, clubs, dancers, people of all ages and backgrounds, underpinned by shared values of togetherness, friendship and hope.”

“Electronic music broke social and economic barriers, imbued with a future-thinking spirit of innovation and it continues to do so.”

“This report, by collecting together peer-reviewed academic research, showcases this impact on society across many different areas.”

“The hope here is that the report will illuminate cultural and economic benefits for both governmental institutions and wider society to give this sector the respect and support it deserves.”

ESNS Exchange - From emerging European talent to major European success

With just over a handful of ESNS Exchange partner festivals left to go this season, 353 shows by 148 emerging European ESNS Exchange acts have been confirmed so far. We’re very happy to say that ESNS Exchange runs a successful comeback season as these numbers are in no way inferior to the numbers from before the pandemic.

Other great news is that UK acts will continue to be part of the ESNS Exchange programme for 2022 and 2023. Even though the UK is not part of the EU anymore, ESNS and the PRS Foundation make it possible for the UK acts to be included in the ESNS Exchange programme for at least 2022 and 2023.

ESNS Exchange results
While British minimalist rock group Yard Act remains a favourite amongst the bookers of European festivals, Swiss R&B singer Priya Ragu managed to catch up. The two artists have been going back and forth for the top position on the ESNS Exchange artist chart but settle for a shared first place for now. Irish singer CMAT, who is also booked to play at ESNS 2023 this January and is nominated for an MME Award, takes second place while both Alyona Alyona and Enola Gay reside at #3.

AGF Announce 15th Annual Green Events & Innovations Conference

The 15th annual edition of the Green Events and Innovations Conference (GEI 15) has been announced by AGF and ILMC. The leading and original conference for sustainability in events will take place on 28th February at a new venue, the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London.

Sustainability has been the hot topic at all event conferences this season, be that music and entertainment, sports or business. GEI 15 brings together leaders and innovators in the global live and events sector to network and accelerate environmental and social best practice to make impactful change.

GEI brings together industry leaders, experts, governments, and cutting-edge organisations, to identify, share and implement practical actions and holistic measures to help with this critical transition. The programme ranges from strategic senior level commitments, to “how to” case studies and workshops for operational implementation on the ground, and all important networking opportunities.

Sessions will cover topics such as transport, energy, food, equality & inclusivity, climate justice, reducing and calculating emissions, design & materials usage for circularity, the interface between the sector and politics, carbon removals and more.

The International AGF Awards also return to GEI 15 in 2023, celebrating the most innovative and worthy events, venues, organisations and individuals from events worldwide in the last 12 months.

AGF CEO Claire O’Neill said:
“Finally, the status quo is uncomfortable enough for change to happen fast. We have to reduce emissions by more than 50% in the next seven years – a phenomenal task that no single organisation or sector has the answers to nor the power to do alone. With many aspiring to a zero-carbon future, how the live sector moves towards a greener business model is now a critical issue. We look forward to welcoming the industry once again to GEI to reflect on the years progress, approach the difficult questions, and steer in the right direction for the year ahead”

GEI is AGF‘s flagship event and is organised in partnership with the ILMC. Limited super early bird tickets are now available, as well as sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities.

Join pioneers, activists and leading collectives in the space of greener events, festivals, tours, venues and entertainment, unite to discuss the key questions in an industry in the midst of transformation.

Out of 100 applications, two winners were awarded a €100.000 investment during the grand finale: data-focused music marketing solution Un:hurd and music education platform SYNKii.

ADE Lab, the conference for young artists and professionals, saw a hugely successful first edition, providing a talent development platform nurturing and supporting the next generation in electronic music. Over 2,000 young artists, producers and aspiring professionals attended the four-day program and learned from world class artists and industry brands, created music together with newfound connections, received direct feedback on their work and took part in masterclasses, demo pitches and competitions.
