Thirty fifth edition of ESNS becomes fully digital
The conference and showcase festival ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) in Groningen will now be a fully digital edition in 2021. Given the current situation and government guidelines organizing a physical edition is no longer feasible. This means that the program of both the festival and the conference will be presented as a digital platform from 13 to 16 January 2021.
The digital edition will continue the mission of ESNS; promoting and circulating new European music as well as offering many new networking opportunities and more reach through ESNS’ online channels and media partners.
Robert Meijerink, ESNS Head of Programme says:
“Although we are sad that the the acts, audience and music professionals cannot meet each other live in Groningen we think that's it's very important in these challenging times, to bring the people of the live music sector, artists, venues & festivals and media together during the digital edition of the ESNS and as the key exchange for emerging European music talent we will work hard to make sure we continue to provide that platform to new artists. ESNS Digital will consist of a Showcase Festival, The Conference focussing on the "Road to Recovery" and an online edition of the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards".
In the past months it has become increasingly clear how big the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are for the music sector. The world-wide shutdown of events represents an unprecedented blow to anyone working in the (live) music sector. As a result, the need to get together is greater than ever. With the digital platform, ESNS will provide opportunities to inspire each other, to enter into a dialogue and to learn from recent developments. With 'The road to recovery' as the theme of the conference, ESNS aims to bring the industry together, regain confidence, face the current crisis and make a constructive contribution to the future of the European music industry.
January 2021 is the perfect time to look ahead and discuss strategies around the re-opening of the live music scene as we know it and to evaluate where we are on medication, vaccine, and fast testing. Looking at the impact on mental health within the industry and finding solutions to sustainability will also be a focus as well as lobbying members of the European Parliament for support of the sector.
Speakers already confirmed for the upcoming edition include Keith Harris talking with Sammy Andrews about equality and racism in the music industry, Mark Mulligan (CEO and analyst at MIDiA Research), Tom Windish & Mike Malak (agents with Paradigm for Billie Eilish, among others) talk to Cherie Hu, Warner Music’s Scott Cohen interviewed by Muki Kulhan, Prof. Dr. Katja Ehrenburg in conversation with Holger Jan Schmidt on mental health, Raphaella Lima (EA Games) on music in games, and Claire O’Neil (A Greener Festival) will talk about the importance of sustainability.
Prior to ESNS 2021, more online discussions will take place in November: On Wednesday 11 November Dutch politicians will discuss policy regarding the culture and music sector and on Thursday 19 November, representatives of European clubs and venues talk about the impact of the pandemic.
The digital edition gives ESNS the opportunity to once again offer emerging European talent a large stage at Eurosonic and the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards ceremony on Friday. Dutch talent takes centre stage on Saturday; when Noorderslag presents the traditional barometer of Dutch pop music.

The ticket price for a digital ESNS is € 50,-.This includes access to the digital environment with live streams, on demand panels, keynotes, sessions and showcases, access to a networking platform and database.

EUROPE IN SYNCH GIVES/PROVIDES MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS
After concluding at Westway LAB in Portugal, the Europe in Synch project presents its findings, insights and recommendations with the aim of improving opportunities for European artists and composers.
An initiative of Music Moves Europe, the Europe in Synch project was set up to create an optimized synch business for all artists, composers and European SME’s, working towards territorially bespoke synch-business scenarios by bringing together the “Music” (European rights owners and composers) with the “Opportunities” (advertising and film production).
The Findings
The findings revealed that Europe in Synch could play an important role in the development of the synch business and that there was a great demand for knowledge building, curated networking, educating the advertising industry and a permanent organisation of senior professionals to provide a forum for advice and brokering.
The project also highlighted the need for permanent networking and a visible initiative rather than one-off events for professionals on the music side, due to the lack in follow ups after the sessions. The curation of these events was also an important factor with a wide and varying range of professional levels from basic to advanced, which meant the content and approach had to be adapted individually for each session. Recurring feedback and requests also included networking between film and music at an earlier professional stage, i.e. film schools.
Says project manager Markus Linde:
“What we definitely can deduce from the analysis of our work over one year, is that across borders, there is a big demand for an initiative like Europe In Synch.”
“On one hand, it is the educational aspect aimed at the young and less experienced professionals and markets. On the other, we will have to see our role as much more complex: grey-eminence-diplomatic, where we generate professional dialogues between the industries in the different territories, and definitely business-focused, when it actually comes to brokering synch-related deals and cooperations.
“In fact, the potential cultural relevance of Europe in Synch lies in the systematic bringing together of knowledge-building AND business-generating. Europe in Synch laid the groundwork to becoming a permanent institution rather than a one-off-project.”
Europe in Sync so far
So far Europe in Sync has prepared and hosted one-day workshops in co-operation with and at European music conferences (Westway Lab PT, SPOT+ DK, Live at Heart SWE, Sonic Visions LUX, MENT SLO) bringing together some 40 participants from the music side with selected senior experts from the world of advertising. As a follow-up on the next day of the conferences, the project and the findings of the sessions were presented in public panel.
During the 2019 Reeperbahn Festival, Europe in Sync initiated and co-hosted a proto-type Meet&Mingle event bringing together for the first time synch professionals from the music side with creatives and producers from the advertising sector - some 80 guests in total. A panel discussion introduced the parties and the EinS project and diagnosed the need and willingness for a creative dialogue.
The film/TV sector was addressed in a proto-type Film Brokering event digitally staged in Lisbon in September in partnerships with ICA, the Portuguese Film Institute. For the first time in Portugal, this film-music brokering-session brought together film-makers with music-professionals creating film-music or representing music catalogues and music supervisors.
The Future
The next step will be to analyze the findings thoroughly which will become the foundation and the framework for a larger long-term project. The three managers of the project have announced that reactions, input, demand and encouragement have been such, that it is safe to say that EinS will resume its mission beyond 2020.

Sheck Wes, Paul Kalkbrenner, Nina Kraviz, Honey Dijon and Solomun join EXIT Festival’s 20th Anniversary Line Up
Sheck Wes, Paul Kalkbrenner, Nina Kraviz, Honey Dijon, Paul van Dyk and Solomun, who will be bringing his special 4-hour set to the celebrations, have confirmed their performances at EXIT Festival’s 20th anniversary!
A long list of world and regional stars have already confirmed their performances, including David Guetta, DJ Snake, Tyga, Eric Prydz b2b Four Tet, Boris Brejcha, Sepultura, Metronomy, Marky Ramone, Laibach and many more.
The central event, marking the two decades of the two-time European festival awards champion, will take place in its famous full format, from July 8th to 11th at the Petrovaradin Fortress, with a lineup that inspired 82% of fans to show their love for the EXIT Festival by keeping their 2020 tickets for the next summer.
Says Dusan Kovacevic, Founder & CEO, EXIT:
"EXIT has always had a huge number of loyal fans, but we were overwhelmed by the very high percentage of those who decided to keep the ticket for the big celebration of the 20th anniversary of the festival next year. We are hugely grateful to the audience for love and support and this also gives us confidence to keep on booking new acts and create an awesome line-up for the 2021 edition and give fans something to look forward to.”
Along with the above mentioned headliners, 999999999 live, Juliana Huxtable, Francois X, Onyvaa live, Bokee, Monosaccharide, as well as VTSS b2b SPFDJ, will be arriving to the Fortress next summer to perform on the three biggest stages at EXIT - the Main Stage, the Dance Arena and the No Sleep Novi Sad.
The new group of performers for EXIT 2021 is led by exciting key players of the world electronic and trap scene. The young New York rapper Sheck Wes, whose “Mo Bamba” is considered one of the biggest hip-hop hits of the last few years, will be arriving to Serbia for the first time. Sheck's talent was recognized by Travis Scott and Kanye West, who signed his releases, and he already has collaborations with hip hop stars like DJ Snake, 21 Savage, Lil Pump, Offset and Gucci Mane. Honey Dijon, born and raised in Chicago, the home of house music, which is deeply rooted in her style, will also be performing for the first time at the Festival's 20th anniversary celebration. After numerous performances in some of the most famous clubs around the world, this exceptional musician, producer, fashion icon and activist will be bringing her unique sound to the Petrovaradin Fortress. She will be joined by Nina Kraviz, the techno girl who has, on several occasions, closed the EXIT Festival and the famous mts Dance Arena and who recently had the unique opportunity to record a live set on top of Mount Olympus in Greece, which is available on her online platforms. Paul Kalkbrenner, whose 2019 EXIT set was voted one of the best from that summer, has also confirmed his arrival. His biggest hit, “Sky and Sand”, has spent as many as 129 weeks on the German charts, and thus found itself at the top of the official chart of the Day of the German Unity, which included hits from the previous 30 years. On his European solo tour in 2019, Kalkbrenner sold more than 100,000 tickets, which brought him closer to the status enjoyed by the rock stars.
Solomun, another EXIT veteran and favorite of EXIT Festival’s fans, will be bringing a 4-hour set to Novi Sad next summer, which will surely include songs from his new album, which is set to be published at the beginning of 2021. The introduction to his new release is an excellent single titled “HOME”, with which he wanted to draw attention to the power of music and how necessary it is for it to return to the clubs and spaces that are considered its home, so that we can experience music in the right way.
Paul Van Dyk multiple winner of the best DJ in the world award and a Grammy Award winner, who recently performed virtually at Exit's Life Stream event, will perform live at the Fortress next July and present his latest album called “Guiding Light”.
The celebration of the 20th anniversary of the EXIT Festival will be held from July 8th to 11th, 2021 at the Petrovaradin Fortress, with performances by David Guetta, DJ Snake, Tyga, Eric Prydz, Paul Kalkbrenner, Nina Kraviz, Boris Brejcha, Four Tet, Sheck Wes, Solomun, Sepultura, Metronomy, Dax J, Kobosil, Denis Sulta, Honey Dijon, Laibach, Juliana Huxtable, Francois X, 999999999 live, Onyvaa, Monosaccharide, Bokee, VTSS, SPFDJ, Marko Nastić, After Affair, Kristijan Molnar, Bokee, Coeus, Goblini, Ilija Djoković, Lag, Insolate, Layzie, Massimo, Reblok, Runy, Space Motion and Thundermother.
All tickets purchased for EXIT 2.0 (50% off compared to the 2021 final price) are also valid for the 2021 edition. Those 82% who decided to keep their 2020 tickets will even have the chance to win some cool prizes: a Lifetime ticket for EXIT, a stage pass for the mts Dance Arena, VIP upgrade of a regular ticket, EXIT fashion packages and T-shirts. And the ones out of luck will also get their consolation: a 20% discount on EXIT T-shirts and souvenirs of their choice.
A limited number of tickets for the EXIT Festival 2021 is on sale at a promo price of 109 Eur + b/f and 40%discount compared to the final price. Tickets can be purchased via the official EXIT Festival’s webpage as well as through the Gigs Tix sales network. Fans who have requested a refund, but have changed their mind in the meantime and want to save their ticket and thus gain numerous benefits, can cancel the refund process by sending their personal data to tix@gigstix.com.

The first Life Stream kicked off EXIT 20th anniversary celebrations and reached 4 million viewers in support of the UN World Food Program
In the year in which the world music industry was brought to its knees, when most festivals in the world were either postponed or held only online, EXIT managed to realize Life Stream, a global project that will mark the festival 2020 in many ways. Instead of just the virtual world, Life Stream also offered a live experience, while recordings of the performances were then presented at an eight-day streaming festival to audiences around the world. In this way, Life Stream brought together over four million fans from around the world, with the numbers expected to exceed 10 million in the coming months.
This event also marked the start of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of EXIT festival, which will culminate from July 8 to 11, 2021, when the festival awaits us in its full format with some of the world's leading stars, such as Tyga, David Guetta, DJ Snake, Eric Prydz, Boris Brejcha and many others to be announced soon.

In partnership with the United Nations World Food Program, the largest humanitarian organization in the world, EXIT launched Life Stream to raise awareness about devastating environment crisis and also to help millions of people around the planet who have come to the brink of extreme starvation due to the pandemic.
Charlotte de Witte who performed twice, Carl Cox, Hot Since 82, Nina Kraviz, Adam Beyer, Black Coffee, Ben Klock, Paul van Dyk, Mahmut Orhan, Marcel Dettmann and many other, international and regional artists supported the project despite many obstacles and found their way to the fantastic stage of the mts Dance Arena at the Petrovradin Fortress, and to millions of fans around the world online.
The realization of the project took place in September, first with a live festival from the 3rd to the 6th, followed by the gathering of millions of fans who watched exclusive recordings of the sets on social networks and YouTube from the 17th to the 27th. A special challenge was the organization of the event itself, but even on such a demanding task, incomparable to anything so far, EXIT showed how a completely safe event can be organized even during a pandemic.
The Life Stream program also helped launch InfinitX on September 24, Exit's new project that will combine the biggest music names with the most beautiful locations around the world in destination promotion. The first InfinitX set, which was also an important part of the Life Stream program, was filmed by Charlotte de Witte at the Mogren Fortress near Budva and delighted over a million viewers around the world in just a few days. One of them is the legendary BBC music editor Pete Tong, who, during an exclusive interview with the techno heroine, called the Budva coast around Mogren one of the most beautiful places in the world.
After the Life Stream launch last year with a pilot event at the Amsterdam Dance Event, EXIT in 2020, in cooperation with WFP, introduced a new chapter and greatly expanded the scope of its activities in which, in addition to environmental protection. Video materials and messages were broadcast as integral parts of the recordings, which spoke about the ecological mission of the project and the work of the United Nations World Food Program. The days of Life Stream were dedicated to the basic elements - earth, water, fire and air - along with their environmental problems, but also the beauty and importance for the survival of life on Earth.
This year's project was also an introduction to the much broader cooperation between Exit and WFP in 2021, which will mark two exceptional anniversaries, the 60th anniversary of the World Food Program and the twentieth anniversary of the EXIT festival, which will feature some of the world's biggest stars as which are David Guetta, DJ Snake, Tyga, Eric Prydz and many others.
EXIT Festival was established in 2000 in University Park as a student movement for the fight for peace and freedom, both in Serbia and in the Balkans. Over the past 20 years, it has grown into one of the most eminent music festivals in the world, bringing to Novi Sad, its venue, as many as two Best European Festival titles won for 2013 and 2017. The Festival is organized at one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Social responsibility remains one of the key aspects of the Festival through the work of the EXIT Foundation, whose social activism is focused on youth development, peace promotion, creative industries and environmental protection.
EXIT. Where hedonism meets activism.
