Leading industry report reveals extent of UK festival and events diesel emissions and impact on public health.
With diesel emissions becoming an increasing public
health concern, World Environment Day on June 5th is focused on air pollution.
Award winning environmental sustainability management company Hope Solutions
and power management specialists ZAP Concepts have brought together key events
industry experts to produce an action research report. Thanks to the
collaboration of hundreds of major UK festivals and events, the report marks
the start of a major industry backed initiative to reduce diesel emissions and move
to sustainable energy sources to help fight toxic air quality.
With data from A
Greener Festival, Julie's Bicycle, Powerful Thinking and over 20 million data
points of electronic monitoring analysed by ZAP Concepts, the accompanying
factsheet is a snapshot of the impact of diesel use for power generation at UK
events and how it contributes to a very real climate crisis and public health
emergency.
This is a problem that can easily be solved, as reduced diesel use is financially better for the events and venues and significantly better for the environment. The events industry are working to understand and reduce their diesel dependence and call upon other industries to do the same. #beatairpollution
Key points from factsheet
- The UK event industry uses an estimated 380 million litres of diesel annually - That’s equivalent to over 150 Olympic swimming pools full of diesel
- Diesel use in generators at events equates to nearly 1.5% of total UK diesel use and over 8% of all ‘red’ diesel use
- 1.2 million tonnes of CO2e is released from diesel emissions in generators - Approximately the same level of emissions as Malta annually
- Emissions from static diesel generators at events are equivalent to adding 220,000 additional cars to the road every day
- It would take a forest four times the size of the West Midlands planted every year to offset these emissions
View factsheet here: https://www.hopesolutions.services/resources
Says Luke Howell CEnv MIEMA Founder & Director Hope Solutions: "Our findings show event sites in green spaces have worse air quality than inner-city areas, indicating a huge hidden contributor to the growing public health epidemic from air pollution. We are releasing this report to open up the conversation with the industry to effect positive and practical change without diminishing customer experience. For the organisers, every litre of diesel not used is saving money and contributing to the fight against climate change."
Says
Rob Scully MSc, Head of Operations, ZAP Concepts UK:"On average the UK event industry could reduce diesel consumption by 40% without risking any loss of power, any blackouts or any detrimental effect on the quality of the events. Venue managers and event managers should take professional advice in order to properly direct their power contractor and ensure that available power is matched to actual demand and where possible introduce renewables and other alternatives. The show must go on but it could go on in a far more sustainable manner, without risking people's health and without risking the planet."

Sea Star festival sends a strong peace message from the Croatian seaside
The third edition of the Sea Star Festival promoted by the award-winning EXIT team, and set in the lovely seaside town Umag in the picturesque Croatian province Istria, has ended on Sunday, gathering over 40,000 visitors from around 40 countries. Memorable performances by Wu-Tang Clan, Nina Kraviz, Sven Vath, IAMDDB, Mahmut Orhan, Ilario Alicante and Enrico Sangiuliani, as well as dozens of prominent regional acts, had Sea Star festival serve as a proper launch of the long summer season of major open-air events in Balkans including its biggest, the EXIT Festival in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The rap gods Wu-Tang Clan brought the turquoise Stella Maris lagoon to a boiling point with raw energy, rocking their greatest hits "C.R.E.A.M", "Triumph", "Gravel Pit" and many others. The emotional peak of the concert was the influential group’s call of for peace, which added to the overall message of love and tolerance in the Balkans region, sent from the festival's organizers.
Sea Star Festival 2019 - Day Two Highlights: https://youtu.be/mQCXzB0lHfA
On the night before, one of
the world’s leading electronic acts Sven
Vath and Nina Kraviz masterfully
led the audience all the way until the sunrise. The German father of techno,
Sven Vath, raised the energy up to the highest point with an ease of a true
master, leaving the command in the hands of the highly energetic Nina Kraviz who
gave an extremely inspired set, galvanizing the audience to chant her name for
two encores at the very end for a sight which can be seen only at stadium-sized
rock shows! The mighty Russian artist reminded everyone of her famous closings
at the epic Dance Arena stage of EXIT Festival, bringing that magic all the way
to the Adriatic Sea!
Sea Star Festival 2019 - Day One Highlights: https://youtu.be/leKGFPC9XfA
The summer fun started on
Thursday with a warm-up party at three stages, while on Friday the lagoon shone
in its full capacity and, among the first, welcomed to the stage the new rap
sorceress, IAMDDB, who charmed
everybody with her attitude and her fusion of trap and jazz music and popular
hits such as “Shade”, “Kurr£ncy” and “Drippy”. It was appropriate that the
introduction for her at the main stage that day was made by regional hip-hop
stars High 5, Fox and Vojko V, bringing the audience to a
delirium.
Sea Star also presented top-notch local and regional stars, such as Krankšvester, Hazze, Buntai, Phat Phillie, Smoke Mardeljano, Frenkie, Bajaga, Hladno Pivo, Nola, Mahmut Orhan, as well as fiery sets, brought by techno masters such as Enrico Sangiuliano, Marko Nastić, Petar Dundov, and DJ Jock.
Exit’s #ShareLove movement sends out a message of peace in the region
On the third day of the Sea Star Festival, at the exact time as the most beautiful sunset on the Adriatic, the #ShareLove panel sent out messages of love and tolerance! The founder of Exit Festival, Dušan Kovačević, Umag mayor Vili Bassanese and “brothers from Atlantis” – local artists from formerly opposed countries, Momčilo Bajagić Bajaga of Bajaga i Instruktori from Serbia and Hladno Pivo’s Mile Kekin from Croatia, once more showed unity to numerous visitors and journalists, highlighting that there is no room for nationalism and intolerance if we aim to create a normal, civilized society.
The next great stop in the
festival calendar is EXIT festival,
to be held from July 4 to 7 on the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad. This
year’s edition is the strongest ever and the main reason is the impressive
music program lead by the rock titans The
Cure, the currently most talked about rock act Greta Van Fleet, the unofficial king of the grime scene Skepta and the new hip-hop diva IAMDDB, the greatest name in DJ history
Carl Cox, the officially most
popular DJ tandem Dimitri Vegas &
Like Mike, as well as such hitmakers as DJ Snake, The Chainsmokers, Desiigner, Lost Frequencies, Sofi Tukker
i Tom Walker, bass heroes Chase&Status and Dub FX, electronic aces Solomun, Tale of Us, Maceo Plex, Paul
Kalkbrenner, Charlotte De Witte, Boris Brejcha, Peggy Gou, Jeff Mills, Amelie
Lens, Dax J and many others, on over forty stages and music zones all
across the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad. More info at exitfest.org.
Amsterdam Dance Event announces France as 2019 Focus Country
The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the world's leading festival and business conference for electronic music has appointed France as its main focus country for 2019.
During ADE there will be a range of activities focused on France. Director Mariana Sanchotene states: “France has been one of the most important and influential music territories for decades, and in more recent years a really innovative market when it comes to electronic music and its sub-genres, in both the popular genres and more underground sounds such as electro and hip-hop. On top of that the French technological scene has been a successful breeding ground for music and culture related start-ups. During ADE we aim to showcase the best of the new players as well as pay homage to the rich culture that France has to offer.”
The Amsterdam Dance Event has grown into the world’s largest club-based festival and most important conference for electronic music. The event continues to develop each year, with last year’s edition featuring over 2,500 artists and 550 speakers in almost 200 venues. The five-day event runs from October 16th through to October 20th and attracts visitors from over 100 countries and features every conceivable aspect of electronic music culture, with dedicated conference programming and an extensive day- and nighttime art, film, gear, live music and pop-up program spread across the city of Amsterdam
The ADE Guesthouse to welcome scène in French Electronic Lab
Besides multiple events in ADE’s extensive conference and festival program, a major part of the 2019 focus will be the French get together at the ADE Guesthouse. On Thursday October 17th, De Balie will be transformed into the place where key players of the French electronic scene gather, to detail and celebrate the renaissance of one of Europe’s house and techno powerhouses. De Balie, situated 200 meters from ADE’s main venue the DeLaMar Theater, is hosting a day of workshops, panels, keynotes and presentations featuring France’s most active and relevant players from the interlinked worlds of labels, streaming, publishing, event planning, marketing and distribution.
“It’s now 20 years since the French Touch, so we'll be presenting the new generation of producers and DJs; the emerging stars, and examen what has changed in the clubs and in the festival & live event scene. We will also outline key contacts for all of those sectors,” Technopol’s Tommy Vaudecrane, co-organiser of the French Electronic Lab commented. “Our aim is to guide visitors towards optimising their business exchanges both in France, and with French companies abroad. Ultimately we hope to provide people with the tools to maximise their import and export activities and to facilitate networking and engagement with new talent.”
The French Electronic Lab is part of ADE’s 2019 celebration of France and the French scène, which is part of this year’s extensive Country Focus program in both De Balie and the DeLaMar Theater.

Brothers.

UKF Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary at EXIT Festival with Chase & Status, Dub FX and Dozens More!
UKF, the music media giant and number one
global bass label, will celebrate its 10th anniversary at EXIT, the Serbian
festival which has been one of their favorite spots in the past decade! This anniversary was reason enough for multi-award-winning,
platinum-record-selling producers, writers and musicians Chase & Status aka Will Kennard and Saul Milton, to answer the
call. They are bringing their new show RTRN
II JUNGLE to EXIT's Main Stage, featuring Kabaka Pyramid and Brockie
& Det. The show is named after their long-awaited new album, set for
release at the end of May, marking another jubilee, the fifteen years since the
band began releasing music and touring worldwide. Their show at EXIT will also pay tribute to the
late frontman of The Prodigy, Keith
Flint, and the great impact he and the band made in Serbia and througout
the Balkans! Pharrell Williams of
N*E*R*D once hailed Chase&Status as ‘The most exciting producers in the
UK’, while Rihanna considers them ‘the backbone’ of her record ‘Rated R’. Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, as well as Andy C and
Pendulumall consider themselves
fans. Bringing his specific sound and extraordinary talent to the Main Stage, Dub
FX, will also be one of the UKF artists coming to Petrovaradin Fortress.
His unique approach to music, as well as his tracks such as “Love Someone”,
“Flow”, “So Are You” and “Love Me or Not”, are well-known worldwide. On top of
this, EXIT will present a brand new stage, X-Bass
Pit, dedicated only to bass music, with fresh British artist 1991, the
talented DJ duo Technimatic, the energetic
Turno and the increasingly popular
Russian d’n’b duo Gydra topping the
bill, whilethey will be joined bysome of the most popular local bass artists!
OFF Festival Katowice 2019 From Tęskno to Techno
Start out with a set of acoustic dreamscapes and top it off with
an industrial techno whipping: jarring contrasts are the building blocks of our festival. Today we add seven new artists to the OFF Festival lineup.
Tęskno
Rare is the band whose name complements its music as perfectly
as Tęskno, which is Polish for “wistfully.” They could also have settled
for “blissfully” or “warmly.” Or perhaps even “magically.” Vocalist Joanna Longić and pianist Hania Raniszewska harness their exceptional musicality and sensitivity to forge an entirely original musical atmosphere that defies genres and is incomparable to any other act on the Polish
and international scene. Tęskno’s debut album Mi is rightfully considered one of the most important Polish releases of 2018.
Veronica Vasicka
A DJ, producer, the founder of Minimal Wave Records and Cititrax,
and a music activist who reintroduced the world to the obscure pioneers of 80s electronic sounds. She can often be seen performing in New York, her hometown, and heard on the air of the East Village Radio, which she co-founded. She’s been around the world with her DJ sets, which combine post-industrial electronics and underground techno.
Juan Wauters
The new wave of Latin music is officially upon us, and if you thought Rosalía taught you everything you needed to know about the culture, this concert will change your mind. More than just a showcase of songs, this set is a close encounter with a fascinating personality. Born in Uruguay and raised in New York, Juan is a singer-songwriter of the everyday experience. He started out with The Beets, smoothly blending garage rock with a folk sensibility. His solo work tilts toward the latter. This year’s La Onda de Juan Pablo—a musical journal of the artist’s journey through Latin America—is the first album on which Wauters performs entirely
in Spanish. These are songs about a humdrum life—and that’s the essence of their beauty.
Dr. Rubinstein
Marina Rubinstein was born in Russia but grew up in Tel Aviv, where she immersed herself in the local club culture, it only truly spread her wings after moving to Berlin. Performing as Dr. Rubinstein, Marina provides
a steady supply of acid techno to venues like Berghain and ://about blank.
VTSS
A familiar name to regulars of Warsaw’s Jasna 1 and Brutaż events, Martyna Maja is taking her raw, high-octane techno to new heights, conquering Berlin, recording for Intrepid Skin and Haven, and teaming up with New York’s Discowoman collective. What is it that’s propelling Martyna’s career to dizzying heights? Come and find out—and feel it with every cell in your body.
Tuzza
Benito and Ricci are coming to us all the way from… Warsaw. Tuzza
is more than just an excellent new-school hip-hop duo: they’ve got
an original concept and carry it out with impressive consistency. The artists behind Fino Alla Fine pilfer clichés from American mob movies and assemble them into original, brilliant and sarcastic depictions of life in contemporary Poland.
The Real Gone Tones
Here’s something that’s been missing from the OFF Festival: authentic, full-blooded rockabilly. We’re catching up this year with The Real Gone Tones, the shining star in the catalog of Barcelona’s El Toro Records. This Warsaw-based ensemble’s sound also features blues and country, and delivers it all with feeling and style, driven by the vocal duo of Marla Marvel and Simon Paco Núñez.
This year’s OFF Festival also features the previously announced acts: Foals, Suede, Jarvis Cocker introducing JARV IS…, Stereolab, Neneh Cherry, Aldous Harding, Superorganism, Hania Rani, Perfect Son, Electric Wizard, The Gaslamp Killer, The Comet is Coming, Daughters, Lotic: Endless Power, The Body, Dezerter performs Underground Out of Poland, slowthai, Black Midi, Masecki Jazz Trio, OM, SAMA’, Jakuzi, Phum Viphurit, Durand Jones & The Indications, Lebanon Hanover, Loyle Carner, Pablopavo i Ludziki z Naprawdę Dużym Zespołem, Emerald, Octavian, EABS feat. Tenderlonious, Ammar 808, Tirzah, Soccer Mommy, P.Unity, Wczasy, Entropia, Boogarins,
Bamba Pana & Makaveli, and the Śląsk Song and Dance Ensemble.
The 2019 OFF Festival Katowice will take place August 2–4 at Three Pond Valley, its regular venue. Three-day passes are now available
at the OFF Shop for 360 PLN. This price lasts until June 9 or until
the second round of tickets is sold out! Campground tickets are also available for 80 PLN.

The main tools of #WeVoteForEurope are the video featuring 13 festival colleagues from 12 European countries and the campaign‘s thankful message.
This is our message:
„Today, we are told there is nothing left to fight for. And yet you fight. You fight for the climate. For
the end of sexism, for the right to love who you love, and be who you are. You fight for the end of gun
violence and injustices done throughout the world.
We, the festivals in Europe, try our best to keep up with you, and create spaces where everybody can
be free and enjoy each other and the music.
Thank you for engaging. Thank you for celebrating your freedom at our festivals. Thank you for
participating in the fight for a better world and voting in the European Elections for a future in which
we can continue to celebrate together at the European Festivals.
We want to show the effects of voting. We want to show the solidarity across Europe. We want to
encourage everyone to vote in the European Election. We are saying THANK YOU for voting!
We would not have freedom of speech, protection of the environment, human rights, a free press and
so many other achievements if it wasn’t for VOTING.
So, THANK YOU!“

#WeVoteForEurope is a campaign of the European music festivals to engage our audience to use
their right and vote in the European elections (May 23 – 26 2019). It was initiated by YOUROPE (the
European Festival Association), inspired by TAKE A STAND and realised with the great support of
Volume and Roskilde Festival.
#WeVoteForEurope is completely independent and privately funded. It is carried out on a voluntary
basis by its supporters.
A note from YOUROPE, why we do this:
„We are the European music family. Together festivals, artists and visitors create spaces in which
millions of people experience culture, music and arts every year. We are a great example of
international togetherness, solidarity, acceptance, open‐mindedness and cultural diversity. Our goal
is to be social, responsible and fair. This can only be achieved in a free, open and peaceful society.
Each and every one of us actively contributes to the magical moments of a festival or a concert ‐
before, on and behind the stage. We also actively contribute to strengthening our society by making
use of our voting rights. Because that is the basic idea of democracy: all of us decide together in what
kind of society we want to live. Be it at local, national or European level.
That's why we go to vote. For the future of Europe. For the future generations. For peace and a strong community ‐ not only in the festival sector, but throughout Europe.“

ETEP Festival Chart
Aiming to promote European music across the world,
ETEP supports the booking of emerging European talent at 129 festivals in 37
countries, alongside working closely together with these festivals throughout
the year.
The following festivals have confirmed the most ETEP
shows so far:
1. The Great Escape - (25 ETEP acts)

10. Roskilde (6 ETEP shows)
With 25 confirmed ETEP acts, The Great Escape is at
the top of the ETEP festival chart. The Brighton based showcase festival joined
ETEP in 2006, and has since booked a total of 285 ETEP acts. Showcase festivals
such as Eurosonic and The Great Escape are highly meaningful as career boosters
for many new artists, and, given that The Great Escape is happening this
weekend, ETEP asked booker Adam Ryan what makes these festivals so valuable for
bands:
“Showcase events are the best way to perform in front of so many music
industry bodies at once. Some of them may seem a little sterile as they’re not
open to the public and others might not give you a sound check, but one thing’s
for sure, if your live show is good you will grab someone’s attention and get
something out of it. Could be festival bookings, could be a live agent…it could
even be a big money sync for a chocolate bar advert.” – Adam Ryan, The Great Escape
