Night Time Economy Market Tracker Report: £153.91bn Industry Faces Growth Slowdown Amid Rising Costs & Tax Increases

The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) and CGA by NIQ have launched a quarterly Night Time Economy Market Monitor. This new report series highlights the economic impact, challenges, and evolving consumer trends in the hospitality industry.

The New Night Time Economy Market Tracker Report highlights both resilience and significant challenges in the UK’s night-time economy. While consumer spending has shown growth similar to pre-COVID-19 levels, the overall pace of recovery has slowed, underscoring the ongoing difficulties faced by the sector.

The NTIA calls on policymakers to recognise the fundamental role the night-time economy plays in the UK’s broader economic and cultural landscape and to take decisive action to safeguard its future.

Key Growth Trends:

  • The Night Time Cultural Economy has shown a stronger growth rate of 3.2%, outpacing the total market growth of 2.3%.
  • Despite this, growth across all sectors has slowed since 2023, emphasizing the broader economic pressures on the industry.

Gross Value Added (GVA) Insights:

  • GVA, a key measure of industry productivity used by HM Treasury and economists, indicates stagnation across the leisure and night-time economy subsectors in 2023.
  • Rising business costs, including labour, food, and drink, have significantly impacted profitability despite increased consumer spending.

Employment Trends:

  • Employment in the UK’s night-time economy showed slight overall growth in 2023, demonstrating resilience.
  • However, employment in key areas saw sharp declines:
    • Licensed club employment fell from 88,300 in 2022 to 68,200 in 2023.
    • Pub and bar employment dropped from 540,400 in 2022 to 474,300 in 2023.
  • Conversely, jobs in sporting venues, clubs, and gyms grew significantly from 409,900 in 2022 to 452,800 in 2023, indicating a shift in leisure employment dynamics.

Overall Market Performance:

  • Pre-2020 Growth: The Out-of-Home Culture & Leisure Economy saw steady annual growth of 2.8% to 6.4% between 2010 and 2019.
  • Pandemic Impact: A severe contraction in 2020 saw a 37.2% revenue decline, with the Night-time Economy plunging 42.2%.
  • Post-Pandemic Recovery: Strong rebounds in 2021 (28.9%) and 2022 (34.4%) restored much of the sector’s lost ground.
  • 2023-2024 Stabilisation: Growth slowed to 4.5% in 2023 and 2.3% in 2024, signalling market stabilisation.

Sector-Specific Highlights:

  • The Night-time Economy remains the largest segment, reaching £153.91bn in 2024, with growth slowing to 2.5%.
  • The Day-Time Economy saw modest growth, reaching £69.6bn in 2024 with a 1.8% increase.
  • The Night-time Cultural Economy reached £42.71bn in 2024, maintaining a 3.2% growth rate.

Employment Landscape:

  • The Out-of-Home Culture & Leisure Economy employed 3.16 million people in 2023, showing long-term growth despite fluctuations.
  • The Night-time Economy reached 2.11 million jobs in 2023, while the Night-time Cultural Economy employed 471k.

Key Takeaways:

  • The UK’s night-time economy remains a major economic force, but growth is slowing due to rising operational costs.
  • Despite a post-pandemic rebound, employment figures in key areas such as pubs and clubs have declined, highlighting structural shifts within the sector.
  • The industry continues to demonstrate resilience, but economic pressures require urgent attention to sustain long-term growth.

Statement from Michael Kill, CEO, Night Time Industries Association:
“The findings of this report clearly illustrate the immense challenges our sector continues to face. While the night-time economy remains a £153.91bn powerhouse, we cannot ignore the fact that growth is slowing and operating costs are rising at unsustainable levels. Many businesses, especially small medium enterprises and the cultural sectors, are struggling to maintain profitability despite consumer demand.”

“Adding to these concerns is the uncertainty presented by the impending tax increase cliff edge, the rise in National Insurance contributions for employers, the increase in the National Living Wage, and the reduction in business rates relief. With no sign of a U-turn on these critical policy changes, the financial burden on businesses is set to increase further, threatening jobs and “livelihoods across the sector.”

The decline in employment across vital sectors such as pubs and clubs is deeply concerning, signalling the need for urgent government intervention and support. If these pressures are not addressed, we risk losing critical elements of our cultural and social infrastructure.”

“We call on policymakers to recognise the fundamental role the night-time economy plays in the UK’s broader economic and cultural landscape and to take decisive action to safeguard its future.”

Reuben Pullan, Senior Insight Consultant, CGA by NIQ:

“The value of the night time economy cannot be overstated, not just for the financial throughput it generates, but also the cultural richness that it brings to consumers’ lives.

However, the industry is under threat. The COVID crisis and relentless pressure on costs have created enormous challenges for hospitality businesses in the last five years, and late-night clubs and bars have been hit hardest of all. However, many other segments have been remarkably resilient, and the growth in new types of venues like competitive socialising bars shows the evening economy isn’t disappearing—it’s just changing. With the right support from the government, night-time businesses can power not just hospitality but Britain’s economic growth and job creation.”

The NTIA remains committed to working with industry stakeholders and policymakers to address these challenges and support the future of the UK’s night-time economy.

NTIA Electronic Music Report Highlights £2.4 Billion Contribution to UK Economy and Calls for Government Recognition

NTIA Calls for the Department for Culture to Recognise the Value of Electronic Music, As 2025 Electronic Music Report Highlights £2.4 Billion Contribution to UK Economy

    • The third annual UK Electronic Music Industry Report details the genre's vast value, potential, and need for Government recognition.
    • The genre contributed an estimated £2.4 billion to the UK economy in 2024, and accounted for £215.2 million in recorded music publishing and exports.
  • The report also highlights that 80% of the top 30 global artists in 2024 have been significantly influenced by electronic music, while 29% share of artists performing at UK festivals in 2024 were electronic—the highest of any genre.

The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) proudly presents the third edition of the UK Electronic Music Industry Report, in collaboration with Audience Strategies and supported by Amazon Music. This groundbreaking report highlights the undeniable economic, cultural, and community value of the electronic music industry in the UK.

The 2025 report underscores electronic music’s significant contributions to the national economy, detailing its impact across recorded music, publishing, and the vibrant live music sector, including concerts, events, and festivals. It also highlights the essential role of electronic music nightclubs in fostering community, inclusivity, and tolerance - values that are deeply embedded in the genre’s DNA.

Despite these contributions, electronic music continues to be sidelined from policy discussions and excluded from key support mechanisms within the Department for Culture. This marginalisation undermines not only the industry's economic potential, but also its ability to nurture creativity, innovation, and future talent. The NTIA calls on the Government to acknowledge electronic music’s rightful place in the cultural and economic landscape, ensuring that it is no longer disregarded in national conversations about music and the arts.

A key focus of the report is the importance of education in securing the industry's future. Addressing gaps in the talent pipeline is essential for sustaining growth and fostering the next generation of artists, producers, and industry professionals. By investing in education, innovation, and community engagement, the UK can continue to be a global leader in electronic music.

There are both challenges and opportunities ahead, but with Government recognition and meaningful support, the electronic music industry can thrive, creating jobs, driving economic growth, and enriching cultural life across the country. The NTIA urges the Department for Culture to embrace electronic music, provide it with the platform it deserves, and work collaboratively to unlock its full potential.

Key Highlights from the 2025 Report:

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, commented:
"Electronic music is one of the UK’s most significant cultural exports, contributing an estimated £2.4 billion to the economy in 2024 alone. Yet, despite its undeniable influence and growth, it remains hidden and marginalised by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. This report reinforces the importance of electronic music having a seat at the table—DCMS must recognise this sector as a truly valuable commodity, not an afterthought."

"From the rise in UK festivals embracing electronic music—310 in 2024, drawing over a million attendees—to its growing global influence, this genre continues to shape contemporary culture. 80% of the world’s top 30 artists have been significantly shaped by electronic music. The numbers speak for themselves: this is not just a niche genre, but a driving force in the creative economy."

"For too long, the electronic music industry has been overlooked when it comes to policy and support. It is time for the government to engage meaningfully, acknowledging its vast economic and cultural impact. This is not just about music—it is about jobs, communities, and the UK’s standing on the global stage."

Rufy Ghazi, Audience Strategies:
“As a lifelong fan of electronic music and a DJ, my love for this genre has grown even stronger through this research. The UK’s electronic music scene is a beautiful testament to resilience and creativity, especially during tough times. Adapting to economic pressures, artists and venues have discovered ways to connect with audiences, embracing fresh ideas and new formats to keep the music alive and thriving.

We spoke to 30 experts from the scene, and our research has revealed just how important this community is. It drives real economic value, from small grassroots venues to massive international festivals. These spaces are more than just places to dance; they foster a sense of belonging and ignite cultural innovation that enriches neighbourhoods across the country.

Despite challenges like venue closures and rising costs, we're seeing exciting growth in areas like hybrid spaces, community-owned venues, and creative programming that reaches diverse audiences. The industry’s influence isn't limited to the UK; it resonates globally, and the genre's export value is undeniably strong.

With the right support mechanisms and policies, the UK can solidify its position as a leader in electronic music. The evidence is clear: supporting electronic music isn't just about preserving nightlife – it's about investing in one of Britain's most dynamic cultural and economic assets.”

Dame Caroline Dinenage, Chair of the DCMS Select Committee:
“Electronic music is a vital part of the UK’s rich cultural tapestry, showcasing our nation’s creativity and innovation on the global stage. It has grown from grassroots communities into a world-renowned industry, generating significant economic and cultural exports.”

“Protecting and nurturing grassroots electronic music is essential—not only for supporting emerging talent but also for safeguarding this vibrant and influential part of our cultural heritage. It is a cornerstone of our creative identity and must be valued as a key contributor to the UK's soft power and global reputation.”

Wes Saunders, CEO Defected Records
“In the kaleidoscopic world of electronic music, where the sounds of tomorrow are constantly being shaped today, we stand at an extraordinary intersection of culture, technology, and commerce. As we venture into 2025, it's essential to recognise the profound impact and transformative power of the electronic music industry - not just within the borders of the United Kingdom but as a pivotal force on the global stage.”

“Electronic music thrives through the interplay of live performances, digital streams, and the unyielding spirit of its creators and fans. From the underground clubs to massive festival stages, from the private studios of bedroom producers to the public playlists of global streaming platforms, electronic music weaves a tapestry of cultural exchange and economic opportunity.”

Steven Braines, Co-founder, HE.SHE.THEY, Board Member, NTIA:
“As an advocate for equality, diversity, inclusion, and innovation within electronic music, I am honoured to contribute to this year’s Electronic Music Report. The genre has always been at the forefront of cultural change, breaking boundaries and bringing people together through the universal power of sound. From the underground rave culture to the global festival stages, electronic music has continuously evolved, pushing the limits of what’s possible and inspiring countless communities across the world.”

“As we look ahead, I am filled with hope for the future of our scene. The next generation of artists, producers, and fans are shaping a more inclusive, creative, and dynamic environment. Let us all work together to nurture this growth, ensuring that the future of electronic music is brighter, more inclusive, and more innovative than ever before.”

A Greener Future Reveals Europe’s Greener Arenas

Arenas from across the UK and Europe have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability and successfully certified events in 2024.  These include ABBA Voyage London and The O2 Arena In London, Glasgows’ OVO Hydro, Uber Arena in Berlin and Forest Green Rovers Football Club.

AGF (A Greener Future) is a pioneer in helping the global live sector become greener. AGF Certification is the world's first and most comprehensive standard for sustainability in the live events sector, for festivals, events and arenas, reducing waste, emissions, and enhancing equality and biodiversity.

AGF CEO Claire O’Neill said:
“We’re really happy to see the increasing uptake of venues aspiring to be greener. What is most important are the actions these venues are taking to improve touring and their impacts on the local and global environment. These venues have a significant platform which can influence and speed up the green transition of the event sector, something that we so urgently need to do.”

To be certified, venues undertake a thorough assessment based upon the AGF Framework, including self-assessment, site visits, and post-event evidence and data submitted to AGF assessors for an independent auditors’ report. The AGF Framework includes 11 key themes, including local environments & community, travel, food, energy, water, waste, EDI, and governance.

Dale Vince, Chairman of Forest Green Rovers said:
“Forest Green Rovers are pleased to have once again achieved Outstanding in our annual AGF certification - which is surely the toughest standard in the world today.  We were the first to achieve this level and are still the only one - we encourage all other arenas to up their game and join us in the stratosphere of greenness….:)”

Sam Booth, Director of Sustainability at AEG Europe commented:
“Finding sustainable ways to execute live events, that don’t compromise on the fan or artist experience, is essential to the future of our industry. AEG Europe has made huge strides in driving the sustainability agenda in the live industry forward on a global scale, from hosting the world’s first carbon removed arena events at The O2, to rolling out an in-house reusable cup system across our three German venues. We’re so proud to have our achievements across London’s The O2, Berlin’s Uber Arena and Uber Eats Music Hall, and Hamburg’s Barclays Arena recognised by A Greener Future, and are committed to innovating and building on this work as we continue on our path to net zero.”

Kerryn Duckworth, Head of Operations, first direct Arena commented:
It has been a hugely rewarding process working through AGF’s A Greener Arena certification. The detailed application process has helped all teams within the arena evaluate our approach to environmental sustainability. It has provided us with a better understanding of what we do well and what areas we can focus on to reduce our emissions and waste further. We can’t wait to get further initiatives in place in 2025 to help towards a more sustainable future.”

Arenas making the grade in 2024 are:

Greener Arena certifications - ‘Outstanding’

Forest Green Rovers - The New Lawn (UK)

Greener Arena certifications - ‘Commended’

ESNS Celebrates Music and Creativity at Successful 2025 Edition

The 39th edition of ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag), the key exchange for emerging European music, concluded last night (Saturday, January 18) with a phenomenal edition of Noorderslag at the Oosterpoort in Groningen, the Netherlands. ESNS reflects on a successful event where 333 new European acts from 33 countries showcased their talents to around 40,000 enthusiastic music fans and professionals worldwide. ESNS Festival tickets were completely sold out.

For four vibrant days, Groningen transformed into a career-launching stage for Europe's brightest emerging artists, with over 300 acts seizing their moment to shine. From nervous soundchecks to triumphant performances, each showcase embodied ESNS's vital role in propelling European talent onto the global stage.

Entire music ecosystem benefits from ESNS results
Anna van Nunen, Managing Director of ESNS, expressed satisfaction with the success of the 39th edition: "ESNS25 has once again proved that music is both our cultural heartbeat and an investment that pays dividends. Across Groningen this week, from intimate venue showcases to major performances at De Oosterpoort's main stage, and through inspiring sessions at the ESNS Conference, we've seen how our European music ecosystem thrives when properly supported - connecting grassroots venues with international talent agents, major festivals with sustainability experts, and emerging talent with industry professionals. To maintain this momentum, we must support the fundamentals: the rehearsal spaces, the small venues, and the talent development programmes across Europe. ESNS continues to show that when we invest in music's foundations, we create both cultural and economic prosperity."

"The diversity of European music was brilliantly showcased at ESNS25," says Program Director Robert Meijerink. "We witnessed outstanding performances from Daniela Pes, Big Mama and Bassolino from our Focus country Italy, MRCY (uk), Sylvie Kreusch (be), Maquina (pt), Meule (fr), CVC (uk), Personal Trainer (nl) and Kosmonauci (pl) among many others. It's especially exciting to see artists like Music Moves Europe Awards winners YAMÊ (France), Judeline (Spain) Kingfishr (ire), Naomi Sharon (nl), Night Tapes (ee), Uche Yara and nominees like Loverman (be), Woomb (bg) and Zimmer 90 (de) breaking through internationally.”

The immediate impact is clear. Anna van Nunen points out: “Artists are already securing festival bookings through the European Talent Exchange, and from the data we receive through ESNS Radar and Analytics, we see that their international fanbases are growing rapidly. ESNS remains committed to presenting not just future headliners but also those diverse sounds that make European music so rich and diverse.” Robert Meijerink adds: “This is exactly why festivals rely on us to discover their final programming pieces, whether for main stages or more intimate settings."

Applications for the upcoming edition—for all European artists—will open on May 1 via ESNS.nl
