Amsterdam Dance Event Completes Program for 22nd Edition

2017 to feature 2500 performers, an all-time record number, and 550 speakers in over 160 locations around Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the world's largest club festival and the most important business conference for electronic music, has completed its program. Between the 18th and the 22nd of October a record-breaking 2,500 artists and 550 speakers will perform at 450 + events over 5 days in Amsterdam. The organisers expect to welcome over 375,000 visitors for the 22nd edition.

ADE, an initiative of Buma, has grown rapidly in recent years. In 2016, the event played host to over 2,200 artists and 550 speakers in 140 locations. In addition to the growth of the extensive night program, the organisation is also focused on the further expansion of its daytime and early evening activities. The day program this year has added technology conference ADE Tech and the ADE Hangover to its growing array of daytime activities.

ADE Director Richard Zijlma is looking forward to the future: "The global electronic music scene is growing enormously, especially through various crossovers with other styles like classical, jazz and hip hop. During ADE, all these styles come together for five days all over Amsterdam, making the city a breeding ground for cultural and technological innovation. It's great to see that more and more professionals and music lovers from The Netherlands and abroad find their way to Amsterdam."

Zijlma’s hardest task now is visiting as much of ADE as possible. But it’s an almost impossible ask, with almost a thousand events spread over the five days. "In particular, I look forward to the opening concert of Jameszoo & the Metropole Orchestra, the programs of ADE Tech and ADE Sound Lab and of course the Philip Glass concert and masterclass.”

The latest additions to the festival program include a special concert by Philip Glass and the ADE Hangover plus Dekmantel Soundsystem (NL), Ellen Alien (DE), Kriss Kross Amsterdam (NL), Lefto (BE), Philip Glass (US), Shanti Celeste (CL) and Sterac aka Steve Rachmand (NL). More info on the festival program here: https://www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl/news/2017/09/festival-program-complete/5214557/

As well as being an event to see the best DJ’s from all over the world in some of the coolest venues the ADE day program covers everything from music, art, gear, tech, film, talks, pop-up and conference and networking program. Speakers include; Boys Noize, Gary Numan, Hardwell, Irvine Welsh, Jorsi Voorn, Kenny Dope, Kiasmos, Modeselektor, Nadya Tolokonnikova, NIna Kraviz, Oliver Heldens, Philip Glass, Shelly Finkel, Soullwax, Riga and many more.

Dave Clarke teams up with Anika on second single from new album

With the first single already receiving support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Radio X and club plays from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Len Faki, Nicole Moudeber and Marcel Dettmann, techno and electronic music aficionado Dave Clarke unleashes the second single from this new album 'I’m Not Afraid’, featuring the sublime vocals of Anika.

With a love of punk and time spent as a political journalist, former Beak collaborator Anika is the perfect match for Clarke. The resulting track features a devastating bass guitar riff supplied by Keith Tenniswood (Radioactive Man) matched with Anika’s assured vocals and poignant lyrics.

After a 14 year hiatus, this will be the second release from Clarke’s eagerly awaited third album ’The Desecration Of Desire’ which epitomises what Dave Clarke sounds like and speaks about, in 2017.

Says Clarke: “I bought Anika’s album from Get Records in Amsterdam when it came out, Masters of War was the track for me and I have always thought about working together on a bass heavy track and her lyrics here are sublime and political”.

Clarke is famously opinionated and outspoken and his music has always been just as singular and standout. Whether remixing Depeche Mode, Placebo or Amazing Snakeheads, serving up his legendary White Noise Radio shows or impressing with his DJ’ing dexterity at the world’s finest clubs and festivals, when Dave Clarke speaks, everybody listens.

Remixes to follow from Surgeon and The Hacker.

About the acts

Bazzookas
The BAZZOOKAS have been a kind of mobile fixture, if not mascots, of the Reeperbahn Festival for many years. Also in 2017, the yellow school bus will be present again, this year, however, in the new Festival Village on Heiligengeistfeld. The evolution of the BAZZOOKAS is equal to the discovery of gunpowder: when the Dutch band got together to make music, their ska broke free like an explosive blend. Since then the eight guys around singer Bazz Barnasconi have taken care of rocking the land up and down. In the Netherlands as well as in Belgium, Germany or France: everybody letting themselves go for this squad, being dragged into ultimate pogo-dance as soon as the opening starts off, just like a Formula One race car. They make whole festivals go mad at once, when they bring their music to the people directly from the roof of their school bus. Then the vehicle starts wiggling, its axles scream, and inside and outside the bus ska-express is let loose, shaking the world to the core.

Dakota
Do you know that feeling? That feeling of wanting to lay back on the couch, close your eyes and drift away to dreamy and hazy music? The Netherlands’ Dakota do just that. Dakota’s new project titled “Leda” blends Psychedelic guitar riffs with indie-pop roots, coming together into a neatly packaged 6 track EP. But don’t let this lo fi charm fool you, the live show of this four piece band gets you to the edge of your seat. They seamlessly blend California feels with Garage Rock and Dream Pop. Look out for Dakota as they make their way in the underground pop scene.

Dool
Emerging from underneath the fumes of Rotterdam’s vast industrial harbour comes DOOL. Dutch for ‘wandering’, DOOL takes their audience on an otherworldly journey through dark, melancholic songs, allowing only the faintest glimpse of hope and light to penetrate the listeners’ minds. When formed out of the ashes of Dutch rockbands Elle Bandita and The Devil’s Blood in late 2015, DOOL quickly gained a following after releasing their first song and accompanying video ‘Oweynagat’, resulting in both a highlighted showcase at Roadburn festival as well as a record deal with German ‘Prophecy Productions’.  Their praised debut album ‘Here Now, There Then’ was released in February 2017, followed by two succesful European tours in the same year. All Those Who Wander Are DOOL.

Iguana Death Cult
Rotterdam’s rousing Iguana Death Cult has claimed its own dominion inside the Dutch port’s concrete jungle. The foursome’s high-octane protopunk and acid-drenched psychedelics create havoc not unlike a ferocious horde of bees. Iguana Death Cult is likewise hyperproductive, not to mention stronger as a whole that the sum of parts. And once you poke their nest a bit too hard, the band’s sheer propulsive force engulfs you from all sides and angles.‘Territorial’ might be the best way to describe Iguana Death Cult. Naturally, debut album The First Stirrings Of Hideous Insect Life is a perfect match for their well-documented dynamo-like thrusts and melodic squalls, which come as natural to them as a (Jelly)fish in the water.

Kuenta I Tambu
Inspired by Traditional Afro Caribbean Music from Curaçao and European Dance, Kuenta i Tambu has created a brand new sound! They cleverly found a balance between electronic sound samples, singing and chanting and the infectious rhythms played by ritual tambú drums. Live, Kuenta i Tambu are a non-stop Carnival, a riot of beats and rhythms that take the audience deep into the Caribbean. Above all, though, it’s obvious that the musicians enjoy playing the music and the live percussion thunders through the air. They already played at stages like: Glastonbury, Bestival, Womad, Best Kept Secret Festival, Body & Soul Festival, Europvox, Pole Pole, Pohoda Festival, The Great Escape, Eurosonic/Noorderslag, Amsterdam Dance Event, Electrochoc Festival, SXSW

Loren Nine
Loren started playing the piano at the age of two and by 9 she wrote her first song, in English too, entitled Lavender Fields. By the time she was 13, she had learned the guitar and signed her first publishing deal as a singer songwriter. Loren made her debut on Dutch national radio to be followed by and appearance on Holland’s biggest Talk show ‘De wereld draait door’. With a self-released song and, barely 16 Loren was chosen to star in the Bose Commercial which was broadcasted in the Netherlands, Italy and the USA. Having recently graduated from the Dutch Herman Brood Academy, Loren now has the time to focus solely on music. Partners and interested labels haven been very flattering likening her style as a singer to Norah Jones and Adele and her talents as a writer are unique and very versatile. Loren is best described as a creative soul with a passion for music, which is contagious to anyone who works with her.

My Baby
It hasn’t taken long for Amsterdam based psychedelic, shamanic trio MY BABY’s swampy blues and funk-inflected sound to cast a formidable spell, taking the world by storm. Over the past 3 years, Dutch brother-sister-duo Sheik (drums) and Cato van Dyck (vocals) and New Zealand guitarist Daniel “daFreez” Johnston have had their mojo working overtime and apart from touring relentlessly, they managed to  release a new album calledPrehistoric Rhythmthis year. MY BABY’s music has been influenced by the power of spiritual music (gospel and voodoo spirituals) and the entrancing hypnotic quality found in music accompanying shamanic rituals.  With the release of their new album, MY BABY endeavours to take the audience on a shamanic influenced musical journey. The new album brought the band some noteworthy achievements, like: First Dutch band to perform at the mainstage of the legendary Isle of Wight Festival, second time playing at Glastonbury Festival, airplay on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 as well as sold out European club shows.

Naaz
Inspired by the likes of Bruno Mars and Demi Lovato, Naaz is a singer/songwriter from the Netherlands who seeks to inspire people with her music. She began writing songs when she was six, but it took a while to convince her Kurdish family to allow her to make her music public. After posting cover versions of pop songs to her YouTube channel, she released her debut single, "Nobody Said," which she co-wrote with her brother Yaad, in 2013. In 2015, she appeared on Yellow Claw & Flux Pavilion's "Catch Me," and released another pair of singles, "Sadboy" and "Escape," in 2016. The following year, the track "Words" arrived in advance of the debut EP Bits of Naaz.

Navarone
Navarone is a Dutch rock band that combines elements of soulful seventies rock with influences from grunge and alternative rock. Think of the classic rock, blues and progressive rock of the 70's (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) mixed with the poppy grunge/alternative of the 90's (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana), topped off with more modern influences like QOTSA, Muse, Foo Fighters and Wolfmother. Add this along with an enormous live reputation and you understand why Navarone has grown into one of Europe's best, most versatile and appreciated rock bands in recent years. With their newest album Oscillation also internationally released in 2017, Navarone are now ready to take on the rest of Europe.

Paceshifters
Inspired by the grunge movement decades ago that shook the foundations of alternative music, PACESHIFTERS bring an innovative twist on the genre whilst also boasting the complete unadulterated attitude that it was renowned for. PACESHIFTERS are notorious for bringing an audience to its feet in full appreciation. Having previously rocked festivals such as Woodstock (Poland), Groezrock, Zwarte Cross, Pinkpop, Exit, Rock for People and SXSW the trio have honed their sound to perfection in the live arena and have evolved into a very devoutly passionate Rock band with a sound that is sure to enthrall any listener who enjoys the heavier side of Nirvana with doses of powerful Incubus-esque melodies and riffs along with the grit and energy of Chevelle.

Sue the Night
Sue The Night is the stage moniker of Dutch artist Suus de Groot. The sultry sound of Sue's melodies is guaranteed to get you hooked to its spiraling layers of melancholy with a shimmering feel-good summer vibe. Since the release of debutalbum ‘Mosaic’ (2015) the six-piece band has been on a ride; airplay for singles The Whale and Top of Mind, 3FM award nominations for Best Band and Best Videoclip (Mind Dear), sold out clubshows and playing big festivals as Best Kept Secret, Indian Summer, Zwarte Cross, Eurosonic Noorderslag. In August 2016 the band was asked to be a monthly musical guest at the biggest Dutch Daily Talkshow ‘De Wereld Draait Door’. New singles ‘the World Below’ an 'Mind Dear' became hits on both Dutch radio 2 & 3. With the release of the second album ‘Wanderland’ (april 2017) Sue's ride continues, bringing an unique sound to new countries outside the Netherlands as well.

The Cool Quest
Dutch band The Cool Quest has played over 500 energetic live shows. In 2014 a major step was taken by focusing on writing and producing their debut album “Funkin’ Badass” which took the band to national radio and TV.  2015 became a very hot year for the band, starting with an appearance on Europe’s largest showcase festival Eurosonic in January. Their hit single ‘Shine’ was added to the playlist of Dutch national radio 3FM and the band won a Radio 6 Award for 'Best Group'. Since saxophone sounds have been replaced by guitar sounds The Cool Quest has developed a more electric sound. Their latest single ‘Coastline’ was added to several Spotify playlists in Benelux, France, Germany and UK. With a rapidly growing fanbase, The Cool Quest plays more than 45 festivals in Europe this Summer!

ADE Green Secures First Part of Program and Announces Pussy Roit's Nadya Tolokonnikova

Conference advocates meaningful solutions for the future in the music and events scenes
Wednesday 18 October, DeLaMar Theater

How do we make an event fully circular? How does nightlife contribute to the LGBTQ+ community and vice versa? And which innovations will define the forthcoming festival season? These questions and more will be answered on 18 October, during ADE Green 2017. Held at DeLaMar Theater, this one-day conference plays a leading role in finding meaningful solutions for the future in the music and events industry. Today, the organisation announces the first part of its internationally-oriented programme, which includes Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova as the headliner.

For the fifth consecutive year, ADE Green – brought to you by ADE & Absolut - brings the most important thinkers and visionaries in the fields of innovation, sustainability and social change, together with the electronic music community. The aim of the event is to exchange ideas, inspire each other and create opportunities for collaborations in order to rejuvenate the sector.

“During ADE, Amsterdam is the hub of the international electronic music scene, bringing together more than 9,000 influential players and 375,000 festival visitors. The industry has a global reach and impact like no other, and ADE Green wants to tap into that influence so as to drive the social and sustainability transition on a large scale. What’s more, festivals and events are excellent testing grounds for innovation when it comes to logistics, waste, energy, mobility and water management,” says Richard Zijlma, director of ADE.

Art for Social Change The rich programme includes panels, workshops and in-depth discussions. In addition to sustainability and innovation, social change is also an important theme this year. In that context, ADE Green is pleased to confirm that conceptual artist, political activist and member of the infamous Russian punk rock collective Pussy Riot, Nadya Tolokonnikova will headline. As a result of their provocative performances about feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, and opposition to President Putin, Pussy Riot’s three band members ended up in a penal colony in 2012, after which Tolokonnikova wrote the autobiographical book, How to Start a Revolution. In an intimate interview, she describes the spirit of resistance and shares her views on the role that artists should play in the start of a revolution.

In-depth programme In addition to this, Unlocking Engagement: How Experience Fuels Responsibility is a panel in which Teresa Moore – director of A Greener Festival, and researcher in the field of public attitudes and conduct – discusses two significant cases: ‘10,000 HOURS’, the volunteer organisation with a mission, and ‘The Eco Coin’, an alternative currency for ecological value. The panel Designing Out Waste: How To Become a Circular Festival reviews the design and use of products in order to minimise waste and the impact on the environment. Speakers include sustainability specialists of Metabolic, DGTL, Lab Vlieland and Roskilde. Paul Schurink (Green Events Netherlands), also known as ‘Mister Green Energy’, will host a workshop on the development of a smart energy plan, and this will be followed by a lecture from climate communications expert George Marshall, in which he focuses on how we can get a wider audience in motion to do something about climate change, and break through the ‘collective silence’ he claims there is around this acute problem. Another hot topic is plastic. During The Plastic Panel, Teddy Vrijmoet (Vierdaagsefeesten), Chris Johnson (Shambala), Tijl Couzij (ITGWO) and Melinda Watson (RAW Foundation) and will discuss the global scope of this issue, resulting in hands-on solutions for combating plastic use.

Elevatorpitch The social and sustainability challenges of festivals require inventive solutions. During the PechaKucha-style panel, Festivals Leading The Way To A Sustainable Future, ADE Green will offer a platform to the most interesting, remarkable and promising new initiatives in this field. There is still availability for one more wildcard: Ideas submitted via adegreen@amsterdam-dance-event.nl have the chance of securing a place to pitch on the stage. Previous game changers who took part and became a success after ADE Green include KarTent (sustainable festival tents made from cardboard), Gerrard Street (circular headphones) and ICEK (extremely economical cooling systems). Additional programme elements are still to be announced.

“The transition to a new economy requires new thinking. It is crucial to highlight and adapt existing processes in our sector via the collective use of each other’s knowledge and technologies. Sustainability, innovation and social change must form an integral part of today’s festival and events policies. The fact that this can be done – without concessions to the visitor experience, or any finger- pointing – has now been proven,” says ADE Green organiser, Carlijn Lindemuller.

Ticket sales and info ADE Green will take place on Wednesday 18 October, 2017 from 10:00 to 17:30 at the DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam. Entrance tickets cost €35 and are available via amsterdam-dance.event.nl. ADE Green is also accessible to ADE Pass and ADE Conference Pass holders.

Dave Clarke drops new single featuring Mark Lanegan and announces new album

After a 14 year hiatus, techno and electronic music icon Dave Clarke drops a brand new single'Charcoal Eyes (Glass Tears)’ featuring the vocals of former QOTSA member and Gutter Twins legend Mark Lanegan which will be the first release from Clarke’s third full length album titled, The Desecration of Desire.

Mark’s gritty vocals sit perfectly over Dave’s incisive, floor driven drums as the track builds to an intense conclusion with the words “I have fucked with the past, now it is time to dance with the future” this essential release epitomises what Dave Clarke sounds like and speaks about, in 2017.

Listen to 'Charcoal Eyes (Glass Tears)’ and pre-order the album here: https://DaveClarke.lnk.to/TDoDPR

Over the last three decades, Clarke has proved a singular voice in the underground dance world. As well as turning out essential tracks such as his famous Red Series, he has also hosted his influential White Noise radio show, which has just surpassed 600 episodes and remixed an array of artists including Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, A Place To Bury Strangers, Placebo, Underworld and Soft Moon. In this new album, the long-time pioneer once again showcases his studio skills and musical vision across 10 tracks that go well beyond the dance floor.

The Desecration of Desire follows 1995’s collection of singles Archive One and 2003’s Devil’s Advocate, which came produced under various outside pressures. As such, this new album is Clarke’s first fully formed musical vision as he would want it. “I decided to write it as I would a book, so the track order you have was also the order in which they were also written, like chapters,” he says in the accompanying sleeve notes.

The album itself contains very little techno. “Not because I don’t like it—I live and breathe it every single week—but I wanted to make an album that was not a collection of club tracks. I listen to many types of music all the time and I felt free for the first time to implement this approach for my own project.” As such it comes coloured with the perspectives of “some delightful, intelligent and deep people who inspired me in their own way” such as LOUISAHHH, Mark Lanegan, Mt. Sims, Anika, Gazelle Twin and Keith Tenniswood.

The Desecration Of Desire begins with the arresting and abrasive sounds of “Exquisite”, with industrial textures and heavy broken beats immediately grabbing your attention. ‘Is Vic There?’ is a cover of the Department S classic that meant so much to Clarke when growing up, a dark, heavyweight, slow motion slice of new wave with LOUISAHHH’s simmering vocals finishing it in style. On ‘Frisson’, Dave teams up with Matthew Sims AKA Mt. Sims, bringing more moody post-punk tension with its cold and stark drums and rumbling bass, before the driving ‘Plasmatic’ is the closest the album comes to hinting at Clarke’s ‘day job’. On ‘Charcoal Eyes (Glass Tears)’, Dave invited former Queens Of The Stone Age and Screaming Trees legend Mark Lanegan to Amsterdam, where the pair recorded the single that has already proved such a hit.

Lanegan also features on ‘Monochrome Sun’, a brain twisting track full of fizzing feedback and distorted drums, while ‘Cover Up My Eyes’ is a paranoid and post-human techno track with vocals courtesy of Anti-Ghost Moon Ray’s Gazelle Twin barely perceptible between the twisted rhythms and dense electronics. Another stand out track on the album is ‘I’m Not Afraid’, with vocals by Anika and bass by Keith Tenniswood AKA Radioactive Man making for an irresistible blend of industrial funk before the grit of ‘Death Of Pythagorus’ makes for a bleak and cinematic end.

This is a coherent and cohesive album that is autobiographical from start to finish: it distills Clarke’s life long love of punk, new wave, noise and industrial into something truly original and wholly spellbinding.

Sziget Festival: At the beginning of a new 25 years

Sziget Festival, the Island of Freedom, has ended with the total number of 452.000 Szitizens attending the 7-day non-stop music & arts festival. The 25th Sziget had two sold-out days with an amazing crowd arriving from more than 100 countries.

Tamás Kádár, CEO of Sziget Cultural Management and the person taking over the role of founder Károly Gerendai, will lead the following 25 years, promising to have vital changes happening already next year. He also added: “The 25th festival is a turning point in Sziget’s life: an era has ended, where we built a unique and popular multicultural festival, differentiating it from other festivals with its amazing atmosphere, cultural diversity, colorful program, high level of services and spectacular visuals. Today Sziget is seen as a great leader among other festivals and because of this we also have to change, so we don’t become just one in a million.”

The 25th Sziget hosted less Szitizens than last year’s record-breaking numbers, but still had 2 sold-out days and more than 450.000 visitors. Kádár thinks that the turn-out number could be a combination of many factors as the growing number of Sziget-like festivals and as he said “an unlucky line-up this year”. Regardless of these, he said that a wonderful and peaceful festival happened during the 7 days.

In 2017 Szitizens arrived from more than 100 countries, most of them came from The Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy, but Szitizens arrived from further parts of the world as Australia or Hong Kong. This year several Hollywood stars were spotted at Sziget as well. On the P!NK day Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Justin Theroux and Luke Evans visited the island, who also came back the following days. Ashton Kutcher and Mila visited the gig of Wiz Khalifa and The Chainsmokers, where they did not only check out the concerts, but also hang out with the artists backstage. Many performers crossed the ocean only because of their Sziget concert, like Iggy Azalea, The Chainsmokers or Macklemore, who unfortunately got hospitalized after the show.

The security system of Sziget was also a success this year: the check-in system introduced last year is considered a great way to tackle security issues and many festival organizers visiting Sziget had a big interest in this new system. The Head of Security had also positive news, the statistics were 30-40% better than last year.

Sziget Festival will be held in 2018 between 8-15 August.

Fun facts

  • Sziget welcomed its 8 millionth visitor: the girl arriving from Transylvania was shocked when Károly Gerendai, founder, gave her a “forever pass” for Sziget at the ticket booth.
  • One of the sensations this year was an Art Of Freedom project, where a mobile toilet led to a secret party.

About the acts

CUT_
Electronic duo CUT_ took off rapidly after their rendition of Stromae’s ‘Papaoutai’ went viral. CUT_ has since then played numerous shows, including performances at Lowlands, PITCH, ADE, Eurosonic and various appearances on Dutch national television. CUT_ released their first single on [PIAS] “Tune In Tune Out” (mixed and co-produced by Leo Abrahams), which was released late last year. Focusing on encompassing the full spectrum of artistry, CUT_ have made video and visuals an important part of their image, as well as trying to excel in their live shows. “We find that live shows are a way to really distinguish yourself as an artist nowadays, especially when, like in our case, the music is focused on electronic production. We make a point of doing everything live.” (Sebastiaan Dutilh: production & songwriting).

The Mysterons
The Mysterons are a very skillful 5 piece band named after the 60s series ‘Captain Scarlett And The Mysterons’. As is suggested by the name, the young band has a weak spot for that period; their hard-to-pigeonhole music incorporates psychedelica, Indian flavours, repetitive Philip Glass like mimimalism, Turkish influences and a careful listener may suggest they’ve given Portishead a few spins too. After recent high profile performances at festivals such as Lowlands, Into The Great Wide Open, Motel Mozaique, Paradiso and French showcase festival Transmusicales the band released their their debut full length album ‘Meandering' inFebruary via Excelsior Recordings. The Mysterons take you on an adventurous, edgy, beautiful and psychedelic trip. Enjoy the ride!

Rachel Louise
Rachel Louise is a singer/songwriter based in the Netherlands. She moved to LA when she was 17 to attend the Musicians Institute for vocals. After three Californian years she returned to her roots in the Netherlands to record an EP and show the Dutch what she had learned. After playing tons of shows, winning the "Utrecht Popprijs" and being "Serious Talent" (at the National Radio Station 3FM) she released her first full length album in October 2012. She writes together with her brother Colin Lee who is also the drummer in the band. Currently she is writing for her second album and also focussing on writing for and with others. You can also catch her playing percussion, keys and singing backing vocals with artist “Dotan”.
