OFF Festival Katowice 2017: Visionaries and Visions

PJ Harvey, Talib Kweli, Kwadrofonik i Artur Rojek, Helado Negro, Group A: the artists in this year’s OFF Festival lineup have almost nothing in common besides their courage and tenacity in pursuing their wildest visions.

PJ Harvey
She’s an outstanding composer, poet, multi-instrumentalist, and singer with a charismatic stage persona. She’s the one-of-kind Polly Jean, an artist whom we’ve admired for years in all her incarnations, from her early rough post-punk days to the more refined and intimate work on White Chalk and the inspired political folk-rock anthems on Let English Shake and The Hope Six Demolition Project. We’re impressed by PJ Harvey’s ambition to change this world by singing, and we’re sure she’ll convince many of us to join the cause in Katowice.

Talib Kweli
This Brooklyn-based rapper/activist first appeared on our musical radars as one half of the duo Black Star, which also featured Mos Def. Fifteen years ago Talib Kweli debuted as a solo artist with the album Quality, an apt title considering that the artist’s technical finesse and musical awareness are equalled by his social and political involvement. He has worked alongside the likes of Kanye West, The Roots, and Madlib, and contributed to the success of the young Kendrick Lamar. The ever-exploring Talib Kweli is among the most important and original names on the American hip-hop scene. This approach doesn’t always guarantee you a smooth ride to the top of Billboard charts, but we’re certain he and his band are going to feel right at home at the OFF Festival.

Kwadrofonik i Artur Rojek
Whatever it was that brought together Kwadrofonik, one of the most original and visionary bands on the Polish music scene, and Artur Rojek, the artistic director of our festival and a singer who draws inspiration from a range of alternative music traditions — it must have been extraordinary. Indeed: Industrial Symphony No. 1, composed by Angelo Badalamenti in cooperation with David Lynch (and featuring references to his films), is truly remarkable. This melancholy story of love, loneliness, and darkness is told through a dark musical transcribed by Kwadrofonik into the sounds of their own trademark instruments (piano, drums, marimba, synths). Artur Rojek lends his voice, replacing the original vocal parts by Julee Cruise. You’ll hear Industrial Symphony No. 1 at the OFF Festival, but be prepared for it to haunt you in your dreams…

Helado Negro
“Nobody sounds like him, in any genre.“ If sentences like these crop up in reviews of your album, then you know you’re getting somewhere. And true enough, Roberto Carlos Lange, the Florida-born son of Ecuadorian immigrants, proves on his last album Private Energy that he’s much more than a fleeting novelty: he’s one of the most original voices on the music scene in America today. His eclectic blend of the rich musical tradition of Latin America, dreamy electronic pop, and political activism produces captivating results. “It almost feels like he’s casting a spell on you” writes one Pitchfork reviewer. Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like.

Group A
This Berlin-based Japanese duo combines avant-garde music with poetry, performative art, and painting. Since 2012 the indomitable Tommi Tokyo (synthesizers, voice, percussion) and Sayaka Botanic (violin, tapes) have been exploring the borderlands of industrial, contemporary improvised music, techno, and noise, transforming every show into a musical and visual experiment.

Line up
Anna Von Hausswolff | BEAK> | Carla Bozulich | Daniel Johnston | Circuit des Yeux | Helado Negro | Group A | Jessy Lanza | Kikagaku | Kwadrofonik i Artur Rojek | Moor Mother | PJ Harvey | Silver Apples | SIKSA | Swans | Talib Kweli | The Black Madonna | Wolves in the Throne Room with more to be announced

Dave Clarke reveals first acts for Stage at Tomorrowland

Ben Klock, Len Faki, Ken Ishii are the first announced for Dave Clarke's Stage at Tomorrowland

On Sunday 23rd July Dave Clarke will once again host the ‘Arch Stage’, which was introduced to the festival last year, continuing to bring his passion for techno to Tomorrowland, flying the flag for the sounds of the underground.

Hosting the ‘Arch stage’, which was introduced to the festival last year, Dave will present a broad range of cutting-edge underground dance music with something for every discerning music lover. This will be the 6th year in a row Clarke has been entrusted with his own stage at Tomorrowland, a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly. Each year he aims to put techno firmly at the forefront at this globally renowned festival, bringing the best artists the scene has to offer to his stage.

Joining him behind the decks for more full throttle techno will be Berlin’s modern techno movement pioneer Ben Klock, whose DJ sets are known for being intense and powerful, whilst capturing artistry and emotion. Next up is Len Faki, another Berlin based DJ, producer who’s bone-dry but communicative execution style sets with raw passion set him apart as a true gentleman behind the turntables. Finally, but by no means least Ken Ishii, one of the most innovative and experimental artists in the electronic music scene, making his version techno at a time when Japan was not yet at the crossroads where all things techno came together.

With Clarke at the helm, this is going to be an electric mix of DJ’s covering all aspects of the techno genre on one stage with more names to be announced soon.

Tomorrowland 2017 will take place at take place in Boom on two consecutive weekends from 21 – 23 July and 28th – 30th July. This year’s theme, 'Amicorum Spectaculum', will make the domain De Schorre enchant you as you dance and bond together with friends to the tune of the finest melodies. It literally means gathering friends and artists at unique times and in exceptional settings. In a few months’ time, ‘Amicorum Spectaculum’ will reveal more of its magical secrets…

More info and tickets here: http://www.tomorrowland.com/

ABOUT DAVE CLARKE
He may be known as The Baron Of Techno, a moniker given to him by renowned BBC Radio DJ / journalist John Peel, but Dave Clarke has an anarchist streak a mile wide and punk in his soul, having no truck with establishment figures or authoritarianism.

A hard working purist, forward thinking futurist, technology geek, part Gothic and gadget lover who embraced the digital revolution in an early stage while his peers where still sniffing the smell of vinyl, a format he hasn’t used professionally in eleven years. It’s unsurprising he revels in the libertarianism of the World Wide Web. It gives symmetry to his savvy techno vision.

As a talented DJ and producer Dave Clarke will continue his newfound love for making music, gather air miles by the gallon and preach his vision on techno both on the decks and on the radio, whilst never forgetting the long and bumpy journey he had to undertake to get where he is now: on top of the game, respected by both fans and peers and very much relevant in today’s scene. “He might be established, but he will never be establishment”. http://www.daveclarke.com/

ABOUT TOMORROWLAND
Tomorrowland is gearing up for ‘Amicorum Spectaculum’, the theme of the 13th edition of the music festival that brings the whole world together in late July each year in Boom. One of the world's most recognizable music stars, Sean Paul, will get the party going on Saturday, July 15th, on the last day of the Sea Dance Festival 2017! The popular Jamaican, winner of two Grammies and four MOBO awards, has more than 30 world hits in his pocket, such as "Get Busy", "Temperature", "Gimme The Light" or "We Be Burning", with the long list of smashing collaborations! His feature on Clean Bandit's megahit “Rockabye” recently conquered the planet and in the next few weeks Sia and him are front-runners for a new Grammy award. Kingston's legendary hitmaker has worked with the long list of stars including Beyonce, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Jay Z, Enrique Iglesias, Santana, Major Lazer, Nicky Minaj, Missy Elliot and dozens of others. These days, he is headed for the top of the British list with a new hit single “No Lie” featuring a new rising star, Dua Lipa! Sean Paul has been credited for dizzying 200 songs on the global music scene, working with top stars and labels. Of those, 36 singles entered the top 100 at the US and UK charts, half of it in the top 10, with seven no. 1 hits! Great intro for the beach party will be done by the Balkan hip-hop trio Bad Copy, as well as the local rappers, the Who See!

Sean Paul coming to Sea Dance 2017:
Sean Paul, the multi-platinum musician with a recognizable voice and characteristic dancehall-reggae style, rose to stardom in 2002 with his second album “Dutty Rock”, which sold in over 6 million copies worldwide and which got him his first Grammy! The album included the hit song, “Get Busy”, which arrived at the first spot of the American Billboard “Hot 100” list, which he repeated soon with “Temperature”! Apart from winning another Grammy, he was nominated a few more times for this prestigious award, and his collection includes a dozen MTV awards and VMAs. Hit single “Rockabye” that saw Sean Paul cooperate with Clean Bandit, spent the last few weeks on tops of world charts, and it got them two BRIT awards as well. Third nomination for the most important music award in Europe was achieved thanks to the song “Hair” that Sean Paul did with Little Mix, in the category of the best video of the year. Greatest current hit is definitely “Cheap Thrills”, a cooperation with Sia, currently sitting at over 700 million YouTube views! The song got them two Grammy nominations, and the new Sean Paul album with guests such as Shakira, Afrojack and David Guetta will be out soon, already a favourite for top spots of music charts.

Bad Copy - Esi mi dobar: https://youtu.be/5OVY7MmSSYs

Ajs Nigrutin, Wikluh Sky and Timbe, popular rappers from local star band Bad Copy, have already confirmed their arrival. They will heat up the atmosphere before Sean Paul’s concert with their megahits such as "Esi mi dobar", "Uno, due, tre", "Idemo odmah", „Ljubav ili pivo“ and many others. Winners of MTV Adria Best Act, the hip-hop tandem Who See, residents of our greatest festival, will once again make the audience dance with their great tracks, including "Đe se kupaš", "Nemam ti kad", "Dinamida", "Nije preša" and others. It is quite possible that they will also do a premiere of a new song, just like they did last year with “Sobe Zimmer Rooms” which soon became a hit!

OFF Festival Katowice 2017: Alternative Music is a Woman

It’s a sad fact that women don’t rule the world. As we observe with growing concern the current trajectory of our civilization, one set up and run by men, we wouldn’t mind at all if women were to take the helm for a while. Nor would we mind if Poland’s Black March, the Women’s March on Washington, and many other similar initiatives combined into one movement that would precipitate real change for the better…

This female element has always been crucial to — and strongly represented at — the OFF Festival. We’ve hosted the punk papesse Patti Smith and riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna, the uncompromising Kim Gordon and the shaman Ogoya Nengo, Fatima Al Qadiri and Julia Holter, Chealsea Wolfe and Nosowska, Warpaint and Brodka, and a host of other strong, bold, talented women.

We’re pleased to announce that our invitations to the 2017 edition of the festival have been accepted by a number of outstanding female artists whose music and attitude truly make a difference. Here are just a few of them:

Carla Bozulich
This New York-born, California-raised musician, producer, curator, and author is, above all else, the owner of a remarkable voice that can accommodate just about any context. She’s performed with the punk-country band The Geraldine Fibbers, led the improvisation post-industrial outfit Evangelista, and made guest appearances on innumerable recordings by her friends, from Xiu Xiu to Mike Watt. Carla Bozulich describes her solo work, particularly her 2014 album Boy, released by Constellation Records, as the most “poppy,” but don’t be fooled: no pop is this original, bold, and intriguing.

Anna Von Hausswolff
A Swedish vocalist and composer with vision. The titles of her albums — Singing From The Grave (2010), Ceremony (2013), The Miraculous (2015) – speak volumes about her style. It’s brooding but beautiful art pop, brimming with the sounds of keyboards, ennobled with a solemn, ceremonial, almost liturgical atmosphere. The comparisons to Kate Bush come as no surprise, but make no mistake: Anna Von Hausswolff speaks in her own artistic voice.

Jessy Lanza
A Canadian singer and producer whose adventures in music began with the piano, clarinet, and jazz, Jessy Lanza entered adulthood (and musical maturity) with songs that charm you with their poppy catchiness while intriguing you with their modern, exploratory form. Her latest album, Oh No (2016) is yet another result of her creative collaboration with Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys and evidence of the fact that Jessy’s voice is enchanting as it is original.

Moor Mother
Looking for some intense sensations? Don’t miss this show by Moor Mother, a.k.a. Camae Ayewa, an interdisciplinary artist from Philadelphia. We consider her debut album Fetish Bones one of last year’s most important records, though it’s too radical for broader audiences. Part chronicle, part complaint and rebellion, Fetish Bones is a stream-of-consciousness flowing from the collective and individual memory of an African-American woman. Critics have likened it to Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl,” Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin, and even Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly — all well-deserved comparisons — but Moor Mother’s message and music are much more vehement, vivid, and furious.

SIKSA
A duo that’ll leave you puzzled yet enthralled with their raw form and uncompromising lyrics. In their own words, “SIKSA is an infantile and antisocial nightmare that emerged from the punk rock, theater, and literature scenes.” It’s “loud-mouthed literature shouted over vulgar bass marches, spat out here and now by a non-actress and non-musician…” And to make things easier for their lazier listeners, they offer the following comparison: “SIKSA is part Britney Spears and part Geurnica y Luno.” The best part is that they’re right.

Line up
Anna Von Hausswolff | BEAK> | Carla Bozulich | Daniel Johnston | Circuit des Yeux | Jessy Lanza | Kikagaku | Moor Mother | Silver Apples | SIKSA | Swans | The Black Madonna | Wolves in the Throne Room with more to be announced
