11 Things to do at Sziget Festival
Sziget is the Island of Freedom and also the winner of the ‘Best European Festival Line-up Award’ in 2015. To live up to its traditions, the festival continues to build its identity offering a diverse and open-minded program, making sure that it is much more than ‘just’ a music festival.
This unique atmosphere has been the essential part of Sziget from the beginning, merging a diverse music line-up with many programs beyond music as theatre, dance, circus and many more. This is all topped with quality services, exciting visuals and spectacular installations. These are the guarantees of success on a very packed festival market.
Here’s 11 things to experience while at Sziget….
1.Art
When it comes to the visual landscape of Sziget, Gerendai added, that Sziget received more than 200 applications to its Art of Freedom tender this year. These ideas and concepts arrived from designers, sculptors, artists or just enthusiastic "amateurs" from all over the world. Out of all applications almost 100 will come to life in any corner of the island. These gigantic installations and peculiar lights bring one, very important aspect to the previously mentioned special Sziget atmosphere, so all day, visitors can wander to one of the 50 venues through many worlds.
In the ArtZone, Szitizens will have the opportunity to try out different art forms and to create arts and crafts. In the main focus we can find re-cycled materials and with the help of the most prominent artistic groups there will be several opportunities to be creative. This year the Architects of Air are arriving with Trilumin-Luminarium. A Luminarium is an 800 square meter inflatable sculpture made up of labyrinthine tunnels and inspiring spacious domes - a sensual world of liquid-light and color. The interactive and community art project of the Before I Die encourages people to share their personal desires, secrets and fears in one common space. The giant board of Candy Chang will await Szitizens to leave those they would like to see/feel/experience before they die.
2.Cirque Du Sziget
The Cirque du Sziget will bring unique and spectacular productions once again, where great international new-circus companies will arrive and entertain the crowd. The German More Promotions will bring their production called 'Soap', a sexy, funny and dangerous show combined with as much water as possible!
From Australia, the company of Circa will bring their production called 'Beyond' . a warm, surreal and unexpectedly moving. Blending dynamic circus acts like trapeze and Chinese pole with cheeky feats of strength and multiple bunny heads, set to a bewitching mix of show tunes, ballads and electronica, this creation delights and enchants.
The Québec Circus School from Canada is bringing their show 'La Souche', which is a progression of each of their own artistic developments with the influence of the others, the relationship of people who love circus, and young adults coming together.
Also from Canada, Les Dudes will perform 'Let's do this!' . Juggling is easy – anyone can learn it with a little practice… perhaps even juggling on someone else's shoulders. But when fire and unicycle are added to the mix, the result will either be a disaster or a success. The Canadian duo Les Dudes will show us which.
'Miss Dolly' is the performance of the French company of Marcel et ses drôles de femmes. The performance of Miss Dolly of aerial and Korean cradles played outside features 4 dusty characters coming from who knows where and start investigating the scene. This spectacular circus production will merge sensuality, beautiful and awful elements as well as apples, humor, absurdity, acrobats and the power of the wind.
The Hungarian Circus Institute will be also present at the venue with the performance called 'The Ball', performed together with the students of the Québec Circus School, and the Hungarian company Recirquel will return to Sziget with their performance 'Paris De Nuit' .
3.Theatre and Dance
The Theatre and Dance Tent will host once again the most exciting contemporary theatre and dance companies at two venues: in the tent itself and also on an outdoor stage. Outside we can meet the youngest generation of contemporary dance both from Hungary and all over the world. From Hungary we can meet Milán Újvári, Adél Juhász and Áron Porteleki, Viktor Szeri and Júlia Vavra as well as Body Lotion, formation of Virág Arany and Júlia Lányi. József Trefeli and Gábor Varga will bring their production called 'Jinx 103'. From the international scene we can see three performances on the outdoor stage: Maastheater from Rotterdam bringing 'Twins' and'Play it Back'. From Israel arrives Roni Chadash and Etay Axelros and Chiaki Horita. In addition, Turkish Ziya Azazi comes back to Sziget with the performance called 'Ember' . In the tent there will be performances twice a day, so Szitizens can check out the world famous Hiroaki Umeda with the so called 'Fluid Intelligence'. The Japanese choreographer is working with five Hungarian dancers this year on this play that will have its debut at Sziget. Important to mention the other companies as E.sperimenti Dance Company, the National Dance Company of Wales, the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, Dani Pannullo Dancetheatre Company and Cortez-Fontán.
The French Transe Express will be this year's Giant Street Theatre company at Sziget, who will bring their newest production called 'Mù', which will invite the Szitizens to the wonderful world of Jules Verne, where we can follow the members of the company from the depth of the seas through fire and air straight to the Moon. This is a very spectacular and amazing production that will definitely enchant the viewers!
4.Sziget Beach
The Sziget Beach is one of the most popular venues, as it is the place to be if one wants to enjoy the sun and chill in the Danube. This year Sziget Beach will be teamed up again with the Cökxpôn Chill Garden, where the only thing to do is "chill". The venue of the Classical, Opera and Jazz Stage will host Gabriel Prokofiev, who is the grandson of the famous musician. At the venue Szitizens can not only enjoy contemporary opera, but can also interact with the artists when it comes to conducting or composing. Fans of jazz should also migrate here as great concerts and programs will await them.
5.Travelling Funfair
The venue of the Travelling Funfair "Vándor Vurstli" will bring a unique atmosphere, a magical world to Sziget, where everything is possible and we can all turn back time. There will be a lot of shooting, tossing and striking game-structures all with some fanfare music! This time Szitizens can also enjoy the Catalan Automatarium and the white caravan of the Omnivolant. The small street theatres bring life to any corner of Sziget, you don't even know where you will meet them! This year Sziget welcomes Brincadeira, Sarruga and Murmuyo.
6.Hungarikum Village
The Hungarikum Village will once again bring to Sziget the Hungarian countryside and show Szitizens what Hungarian customs, virtue, food and drinks are all about. Every year has a special theme, this time it will be the "toys and games". The fresh and dynamic venue of Sziget, the Afo-Latin-Reggae Village will be very colorful again! Every day special workshops, dance and drum lessons, yoga classes, capoeira, salsa, samba, African dance and drum workshops, Northern African belly dance and Afro-Caribbean dance workshops will await the Szitizens. Straight from Senegal, the Sory Ballet Camara will bring their authentic African dance and drumshow production and also representing the South-Asian reggae scene Ras Muhamad from Indonesia will bring some nice beats.
7.Museum Quarter
The Museum Quarter is where Szitizens can meet the most important Hungarian museums in a highly interactive and fun way. However this year there is also a special guest, the Musée national de l'historie de l'immigration. The prestigious museum from Paris together with the Museum of Ethnography from Budapest will have an almost 30 meters long exhibition and interactive program series focusing on the topic of borders. This way the center of attention will be the borders and migration, where they will show migration issues starting from the fall of the Berlin Wall.
8.Magic Mirror
The Magic Mirror is the resident queer and LGBT venue of Sziget. The venue is the host of man discussions this year in English language brought to the Szitizens by Kristóf Steiner, while the movie screenings will once again feature the queer movies of the Berlinale Film Festival, where the Q&As will be hosted by Kristian Petersen. This year Dave Thompson will bring some laughter with his stand-up performances and finishing the program every day, Szitizens can enjoy the Variéte show, this time directed by Markus Pabst, who is the founder of the Base Berlin. The show will feature artists as David Pereira and Jack Woodhead.
9.Games
The I Ching Labyrinth is an interactive venue, where visitors can learn about themselves and help them to discover unknown truths with the help of the I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes, and the 64 hexagrams. The exiting and interesting venue of GameLandHub will present the digitally controlled world around us. Besides digital games, traditional games also can be found as well as the new generation of the world’s best and latest party board games. Here Szitizens can also master their knowledge of the Rubik's Cube and play poker as well. At the venue of the Chess Tent Szitizens can start learning or strengthen their chess knowledge.
10.SportsZone
In partnership with sport associations Sziget's aim is to provide a place for Szitizens to get to know various new sport activities or just find some leisure time enjoying their favorite sports. This place is the SportsZone, where in 2016, the year of the Olympics and the UEFA European Championships Sziget is planning special activities and surprises, such as establishing a center for the Olympics with live broadcast of the events of Olympic Games.
11.Eat food from around the world
The gastronomy landscape of Sziget aims to be both diverse and high quality. This time even more restaurants will be present from outside Hungary. For instance FoodStock, festival kitchen of the Slovakian restaurant Fou Zoo, will also bring a nice twist to the wide variety of hamburgers, pizzas, the most exciting food trucks, Hungarian specialties and prominent kitchens from all over the world.
If that wasn’t enough the artist line up for this years festival is huge with acts including; Rihanna, Muse David Guetta, Sia, Manu Chao La Ventura, Hardwell, Noel Gallager's High Flying Birds, Bastille, Sigur Rós, The Last Shadow Puppets, John Newman, The Lumineers, Die Antwoord, Sum 41, Kaiser Chiefs, Parvoc Stelar, Nicky Romero, Crystal Castles, Years&Years M83, Jake Bugg, CHVRCHES, Róisín Murphy, Bloc Party, MØ, Travis Scott, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet for my Valentine, Jess Glynne, Afro Jack, Zedd, DVBBS, Skunk Anansie and many more!

Berlin techno institution Tresor celebrates 25 years at EXIT Festival
The legendary Exit Festival stage that promotes independent electronic music and contemporary culture, No Sleep Novi Sad will welcome Berlin’s leading techno institution Tresor on Friday, 8 July. The tour celebrating a quarter of a century for one of Europe’s leading clubs and an extremely influential record label, after Amsterdam, London, Detroit, and Sydney, is arriving to the Petrovaradin Fortress. The lineup will be led by the icon of electronic music and founder of Berlin’s contemporary sound Mortiz van Oswald, joined by the leaders of the new European techno scene Zadig, Dasha Rush and Psyk! The local scene will be represented by the producers who have performed at Tresor - Belgrade’s iconic producer, living and working in Berlin, Miloš Pavlović better known as Regen, as well as Belgrade’s new favourite and club Drugstore’s resident DJ, Filip Xavi.
The undisputed champion composer of the electronic avantgarde - Moritz van Oswald, has always been at the very top of contemporary world music innovations. Descending from the noble line of Bismarck, Von Oswald is a percussionist with a background in classical tradition, who early on started exploring the immense possibilities of the then new electronic genre. Bridging over the pioneering techno scenes in Detroit and Berlin which nurtured this sound, it was Von Oswald who pioneered Berlin’s contemporary sound, label and the club Tresor. He has founded some of the most prominent acts in the history of contemporary art: Basic Channel, Maurizio, Rhythm and Sound, as well as the famous Moritz van Oswald Trio, where he was accompanied by Tony Allen and Max Loberbauer. Together with Juan Atkins he also created Borderland, duo which recently released a new album, recognized by critics as one of this year’s best releases. Inspiring many and setting standards with his transformative sound, he characterizes his work as a special fusion of minimal and dub-techno. His partnership with Carl Craig on re-imagining the classical works of Ravel and Mussorgsky, as well as collaborations with renowned jazz trumpet Norwegian Nills Petter Movaerom speak volumes about the extent of Moritz’s love for music.
EXIT will also host the iconic Russian producer Dasha Rush, one of the most intriguing personas from the contemporary techno scene. Famous for her record label “Fullpanda”, she is also known for her authentic sound and the rare ability to erase boarders between genres and countless styles of electronic music. Today, her name synonymous with leading electronic events such as the Parisian Weather, Mexico’s Mutek, or Berlin’s Atonal, while her latest album “Sleepstep – Sonar Poems for My Sleepless Friends” brought the undivided attention of the entire musical community, and her two DJ mix releases “Intense Vertical” and “Sleepless Horizontal” will perfectly fit the wide spectrum of sounds that will feature at No Sleep Novi Sad Stage on Friday, 8 July.
One of the leading names from the neo-Parisian scene, Zadig is among the most credited artists for “The City of Light” returning to the map of contemporary techno music. His first release titled “Vision” opened doors to numerous labels, among which was Technasia’s renowned Sino, that exposed Zadig's talent to the world. His Construct Re:Form label emerged in 2011, along with the residency at the Rex club, where through promotions and collaborations with new exciting figures such as Antigone, Voiski, Birth of Frequency he strengthened the new Parisian scene. Today, Zadig is frequently playing clubs like Tresor and Concrete, as well as the popular Parisian Weather Festival.
Arriving from Madrid with an exquisite attitude, Psyk stands for one of the most talented producers that have emerged in the last several years. His tracks found place among the greatest electronic record labels such are Minus (before he even turned 19!), Drumcode, CLR and Mote-Evolver, which inspired legendary artists Oscar Mulero and Robert Hood to name Psyk as the most interesting techno producer today. Talent and hard work brought him success with releases such as “Lowdown” and “Eclipse”, as well as “Arcade” which reached the top of Resident Advisor’s prestigious chart! Nowadays, Psyk's furios sets can be heard at the major European clubs Fabric, Tresor and Concrete. His most extensive world tour yet awaits Psyk this summer, leading him to the very top of today’s techno scene.

dubfire:liveHYBRID debuts in Ibiza at International Live Summit
Dubfire’s critically acclaimed live project dubfire:liveHYBRID is heading to Ibiza for it’s debut performance on the Island for the International Live Summit closing party at the historic, UNESCO World Heritage Dalt Vila site.
Never satisfied with the status quo, Dubfire spent two years crafting a live show; his HYBRID concept has been wowing audiences since its soft launch debut at the Amsterdam Dance Event in 2014. Described by Thump as, “unlike anything we had previously seen or heard before anywhere,” HYBRID reinvents the concert experience by seamlessly weaving together elements of 2D and 3D animation with live audio and lighting to explore the intersection of science and technology - of man and machine - and their resulting evolution and inevitable fusion. After touring 12 different countries in 2015, and receiving rave reviews at Coachella, the critically acclaimed show will touch down at more of the biggest events across the globe.
Says Dubfire: “I’d always intended for my music to be performed live, supported by the latest advancements in music, stage design, lighting and sound technology. It took me years to build up a body of work that I’m proud to stand behind and find the team to create the HYBRID show. It’s been an incredibly inspiring ride and I’m tremendously excited to finally bring the show to the fans who continue to support me and my sound”
Watch the official trailer here: Official Trailer: https://youtu.be/iuORN3mydD0
“Also excellent in the Mojave was Iranian DJ Dubfire, whose late Saturday turn was technical, precise, and wildly fun”. – Pitchfork
"We don’t exaggerate when we tell you the event was unlike anything we had previously seen or heard before anywhere, let alone at ADE" – THUMP
"The cinematic experience of Dubfire 's performance feels like you are inside a movie...indeed the highlight of this years Amsterdam dance event" - The Creators Project, Vice
“Playing behind four panels that enhanced and refracted his shadows, he (Dubfire) unveiled his new live show on Friday night, captivating the crowd with a spellbinding combination of minimal techno and trippy rendered visual.”. – Billboard
Decade of Dubfire
Is that wasn’t enough, Dubfire will also celebrate a decade of Dubfire in 2016, having gone down his own distinctly singular sonic path for a whole ten years. After early success as part of the still influential dance duo Deep Dish, the man born Ali Shirazinia now has his own label empire, legions of fans around the world and a unique take on electornic music that has made him a truly global superstar.
It was no easy move to go solo after the Grammy winning success of the Deep Dish project, but the challenge of carrying out his own solo musical mission is one that Ali has more than risen to. In that time, he has established his label SCI + TEC as a world renowned platform for his own music and that of a carefully curated list of talents old and new. He has also headlined every major club and festival in the world on a regular basis, has created his pioneering live Hybrid show and has earned a reputation as an artist right at the forefront of live performance and audio visual entertainment.
Though many believed Dubfire was crazy going it alone, the seminal success of his solo tracks like ‘Ribcage’, ‘Emissions’ and ‘Roadkill’ prove he has more than made his own way. Remixes of ‘Spastik’ by Plastikman, live shows from LA to Barcelona, Washington to Womb have continued to prove the point and for the last two years, and his HYBRID live concept has been wowing crowds everywhere. Created with the aim of reinventing the concert experience and combining overlapping screen projections, a mind-blowing array of strobe lights and a powerful 2D and 3D visual framework, the show has seen Ali incorporate the latest advancements in technology to deliver an out of this world live display.
It is fair to say this show, a ground breaking combination of man and machine, science, art and technology, has proved the high point of Dubfire’s solo career. But all good things must come to and end and so in 2016, after two years of touring and to coincide with his decade at the top, it will cease to exist after some final showcases at Coachella, International Music Summit Ibiza, Dockyard Festival, Movement and more to be announced.
Dubfire will also celebrate 10 years at the top as a solo artist in 2016, and though this first chapter of Dubfire’s solo career is almost done and dusted, the man himself, as ever, continues to look forwards. As such you can expect him to unveil some new and exciting projects in the near future, whilst he is also being honoured with the release of a new movie about his life and career, with a trailer available here: https://vimeo.com/122099244.

The Readingite is after all these years still an unstoppable force who left quite the impression with the intense ‘Hama Static’ track on Ostgun Ton’s ‘Zehn’. Slater found his soulmate last year in the form of fellow Englishman Ø [Phase]. Although they haven’t performed that often together yet, just listen to their NTS Radio mix to get a taste of all the goodness that’s about to happen in October.
A headliner in his own right: Germanic hero Marcel Fengler joins the bill. As one of Berghain’s first dj’s, Fengler is a ubiquitous crowd favorite, largely in part due to his almost kaleidoscopic form of techno, shifting constantly between its ambient and dynamic side. Being one of the more sought after dj’s, the dj/producer has seen the likes of Awakenings and Time Warp, but also Tomorrowland and Lowlands Festival.
If Clarke’s new club night ‘Whip It’ at Melkweg proved something, it would be that electro is back, more than ever. So who better to invite than the one and only Miss Kittin? Especially since buddy The Hacker left nobody standing last year, it’s up to the Kittin to crack that whip some more. Everyone who’s seen the Miss knows she’s all about the more glitchy side of techno with more than just a hint of electro. She’ll dare you to move and groove and beat you with a hit if you don’t.
You like your techno rough and just a bit faster than usual? Look no further than Briton-turned-German Tommy Four Seven, he will get those limbs pumping. The celebrated dj and producer is without a doubt one of techno’s leading men who can also fall back on an almost enviable discography. Releases on Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe, Chris Liebing’s CLR, Stroboscopic Artefacts; he’s done them all. To see Tommy live is to be part of a delightful relentless type of techno experience that will have you sweating faster than a nominee shareholder from Panama.
And we’re just getting started. The little lady of techno Rebekah will be part of the Dave Clarke Presents night as well. Though she may be little of stature, Rebekah has made a steady rise to the top of the techno industry. No small feat for the woman who’s live reputation rivals her own EP’s. Listen to the versatile works of ‘Distant’, ‘Beginnings’ and ‘Elements’ and you´ll find both sensible and fierce sides of Rebekah. And if it’s fierce you want, don’t miss out on Black Asteroid. Bryan Black (half of the enigmatic MOTOR) gives credit to his last name with a particular brand of techno meets acid, devoid of much color. Some dark themes that are no stranger to Bromance adept Louisahhh. The French dj/producer has been Brodinski’s mainstays on his label for many years, and just when things started to get a little bit quiet, she hit back with the mesmerizing ‘Shadow Work’ EP that’s filled to the brim with raw, dark beats and astute lyrics.
No Dave Clarke Presents is complete without a delegation from the Low Countries. Clarke found them: Flemish techno star Charlotte de Witte will show what the buzz is all about, Estroe is present and can call herself a label boss since the inception of Rosedale Records last year, and last but not least: Clarke’s Unsubscribe buddy Mr. Jones joins the quite impeccable line-up.
Tickets:
