The International Radio Festival presents “ON-AIR Special Commendation Award” to Ghetto Radio Ghana

During the third edition of the International Radio Festival (IRF) in Zurich, radio stations from around the world united and showcased some of the best music programmes available today. As well as being a hub for the radio industry to network and share ideas the IRF also presented the “ON-AIR” Awards, which underpin the festival’s goal to celebrate the very best in global music radio programming. All invited music radio guests who participated at the event were nominated for one of five awards, and through these awards the IRF wishes to honour those radio makers who push the boundaries in music radio entertainment.

Four of the awards were announced live “ON-AIR” during the festival in Zurich and the fifth and final award can now be revealed, with the Special ON-AIR Award Commendation going to Chale FM, Ghetto Radio, Ghana.

We feel privileged to win the IRF 2012 Award even before we have officially launched the station. This award goes out to all Accra kids waiting for a radio station that truly represents them”.  Matt Brouwer, General Manager at This Is Africa, Supporting and developing new media initiatives across Africa that benefit urban youngsters.

Ghetto Radio Ghana, which will be launched as Chale FM, is a sister station to Ghetto Radio Kenya. It aims to uplift youngsters from ghetto urban areas via popular culture, edutainment, street codes and language and giving them a voice to express their own concerns and interests. Chale FM will be managed and coached via the Kenya Ghetto Radio team and will eventually set up their own profitable CSR programming benefiting the youth in Accra Ghana. Chale FM will launch from March 2013 in Accra via FM and streaming over the net. Find our more online www.chale.fm and www.ghettoradio.co.ke

What the winners said:

“Getting the ‘IRF ON AIR’ award took me completely by surprise. I’m that strange radio creature: the media shy music personality; and I’ve never had quite so much positive feedback on my show all at once. It was beautiful and overwhelming.  It also had quite some impact at my station and among my listeners and I have to say they both seem to be quite proud of their achievement! I congratulate them for they are FM4 Sunny Side Up and I thank you IRF on their behalf.”  John Megill, Sunny Side Up, FM4, Austria

“We’re very chuffed to have won the award for the best international radio station. It’s our third visit to the IRF and it’s a great place to meet people from all over the world who you wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to hook up with.” Andy Wilson, Ibiza Sonica, Ibiza, Spain

“I am honoured to be the recipient of IRF’s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. Darryl and Miguel’s festival recognises the power and beauty of radio, and I feel fortunate to be able to participate and contribute”. Robert Kraft, Fox Music President, USA
