The talent always exceeds expectations and past editions have seen tracks signed to labels including Armada, Axtone, Krafted and New State Music.

Axtone’s Edd Thomas said:

Moreover, the unpredictable nature of external factors, including weather conditions and public health concerns, further adds to the complexity. The summit serves as a platform for stakeholders to collaboratively explore innovative solutions, share best practices, and advocate for policies that support the sustainability and growth of independent festivals within the Night Time Economy.

Amsterdam Dance Event looks back on exceptional edition and announces dates for ADE 2024

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) welcomed a record number of 500,000 visitors throughout its Festival and Conferences, which took place over five days and nights.  Next year’s edition of ADE will take place October 16—20, 2024.

The 28th edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event has come to an end, hosting 2,900+ artists at over 1,000 events and initiatives taking place in over 200 locations across the city, and welcoming a record number of 500,000 global visitors and 650,000 sold tickets.

ADE has grown to become the most important and influential breeding ground for electronic music culture and talent. This year’s program showcased a wide array of electronic music subgenres, live music and cultural crossovers throughout its Festival and Arts & Culture programs, focusing on a diverse and inclusive offering both in terms of artist roster and audiences. Standout events included the opening event at Rijksmuseum by upsammy, Metropole Orkest & Tinlicker, a one-off b2b between KI/KI and Armin van Buuren, and social impact events by Music Moves. Familiar staples such as Speedy J’s STOOR, Audio Obscura, Martin Garrix’ 18+ and All Ages events, also saw their return to ADE, alongside new collaborations such as Andalusisch Orkest x Mary Lake and Het HEM x Horst.

ADE Pro Conference

In addition to the enormous variety of sold out festival events, the ADE Pro Conference extended its programming to four days for the first time this year. The conference welcomed global artists and influential companies to Felix Meritis to  cover the strategies, opportunities and responsibilities that define the music industry.

Global industry leaders and tech experts at Google, TuneCore, SEG and more envisioned the enormous impact of Artificial Intelligence, and platforms including Spotify, TikTok, YouTube and Beatport offered real insider knowledge to attendees. The new ADE Startups also kicked off a year-long development platform for innovative startups, and international event organisers gathered for a deep discussion on the future of festivals. In addition, the conference invited world class artists on stage, including DJ icon Grandmaster Flash, The Blessed Madonna, Röyksopp and Max Cooper - with the latter two also hosting one-off live performances for all conference attendees.

ADE Lab, the talent development gathering for young artists and professionals, saw a hugely successful sophomore edition, nurturing and supporting the next generation in electronic music. Over 2,000 young artists, producers and aspiring professionals learned from world class artists including Reinier Zonneveld, Mama Snake, Saoirse, Héctor Oaks and A-Trak, create music together with newfound connections, receive feedback on their work, and compete in demo drops.

The Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to nurturing electronic music, its culture and its industry worldwide. ESNS Exchange Celebrates 20 years of supporting new artists

ESNS Exchange, the European Talent Exchange Programme formerly known as ETEP, traces its roots back to 2003 when it was established in response to the significant challenges faced by European pop music in the realms of international promotion and distribution. The primary objective of ESNS Exchange was, and still is, to forge a robust network among stakeholders, with the aim of facilitating, supporting, inspiring, and promoting the unrestricted global circulation of creative European musical talent.

In 2023 ESNS Exchange celebrates its 20-year anniversary. To commemorate this, ESNS Exchange will host a panel at BIME festival in Bilbao on the 25th of October (10:00-10:45), alongside several events and panels during ESNS in January. The ESNS Exchange programme is funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission and is organized in collaboration with Yourope, the export offices and the media partner EBU.

“It is an honor to support and present the diversity of the live music scene in Europe by kickstarting the careers of many new artists for 20 years by Exchange, the European Talent Exchange Programme.

With Exchange the role of the ESNS Conference and Festival has been put to the next level. Exchange as a project connects all parts of Europe and helps artists grow beyond local, cross European borders and around the world.

This is impossible without the strong cooperation with Yourope, our great partner festivals, the export offices, the partners of the European Broadcasting Union, the European Commission and of course all the amazing artists from Europe. We’re looking forward to building the future of the European music scene and ESNS Exchange's role in it.” - says Robert Meijerink (Head of Programme at ESNS & Booker for ESNS Exchange)

Highlights

With a two-decade history of facilitating the international distribution of European music, artists, and productions, as well as fostering collaborative efforts between the music industry and media to promote acts and their repertoire, ESNS Exchange has witnessed numerous notable achievements. Countless artists have reaped the benefits of this programme, embarking on international tours that span the globe.

CEETEP was also a groundbreaking part of the Exchange Program with the aim to promote the circulation of artists and repertoire of Central East European countries across Europe.  During the 5 year project (2012-2015), ESNS and co-organisers Sziget and Exit Festival created a plan to encourage the circulation of CEE artists and repertoire in Central and Eastern Europe with the support of 18 festivals and selected media partners in the CEE region. By working together, the CEETEP project helped more CEE artists perform across borders within Central Eastern Europe, and via shows at ESNS, throughout the whole of Europe and beyond.

To date, ESNS Exchange has supported 2,145 European artists hailing from 35 countries, enabling them to perform at an impressive tally of 5,288 shows across 187 partner festivals in 44 countries.

With supporting over 2,000 European artists over 20 years, ESNS Exchange stood at the base of numerous successful careers such as Editors, Blood Red Shoes, The XX, Iceage, Anna Calvi, Katzenjammer, AURORA, Kae Tempest, Phoenix, Shame, Buraka Som Sistema, Fontaines D.C., Sigrid, Flohio, Marina Satti & Fonés, Altin Gün, Priya Ragu, and many more.

An overview of all the ESNS Exchange results of the past 20 years is now available at ESNS Radar. This includes a line-up archive of over 130 Exchange partner festivals counting ESNS Exchange alumni and the rest of the bookings.

NTIA Launches 'Listen for Life' Campaign at the House of Commons in Partnership with Specsavers to Encourage Hearing Health Testing and Tinnitus Prevention

The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) is thrilled to announce the launch of the "Listen for Life" Campaign at the prestigious House of Commons on Wednesday 18th October, a ground-breaking initiative aimed at preventing hearing loss and addressing the mental health challenges associated with Tinnitus. This momentous event will feature esteemed guests from a variety of industry sectors the campaign has garnered significant backing from creative and businesses across the nation, who are united in support of this essential cause.

Hearing is a vital sense that impacts everyone, and the NTIA recognises its paramount importance. The organisation is excited to Partner with Specsavers and work in conjunction with the World Health Organisation’s Make Listening Safe UK Campaign, aligning their efforts to create a safer auditory environment for all.

Hearing loss and Tinnitus are unfortunately prevalent among those working in the industry. The NTIA is fully aware of the pivotal role that the industry plays in safeguarding the hearing of individuals in various roles, from bar staff to performers, security personnel, and crew members. In addition to adopting the guidance provided by the WHO, the NTIA will introduce a campaign to collaborate with the industry. This initiative will promote the importance of testing, developing training, and raising awareness about the impacts of hearing loss and effective methods for protecting one's most valuable asset when enjoying music.

Michael Kill CEO Night Time Industries Association says “I truly did not understand the devastating impact that hearing loss has had on our industry prior to engaging in this campaign. I have spoken to hundreds of artists and DJ’s who have suffered for years with this debilitating issue. People have ended their careers because of this, so it is important to increase awareness and champion the future of hearing health for people coming into our industry, or just enjoying culture.”

Jeff Smith MP for Manchester Withington & Co Chairperson for the Night Time Economy APPG says “As co-chair of the Night Time Economy APPG I am really pleased to see the NTIA shining a light on this issue with the Listen for Life Campaign. Hearing loss can affect anyone, and it’s sadly prevalent in the music industry. Performers, staff and gig-goers at clubs and music venues need to be aware of the potential impact on their hearing of loud volumes and be supported to manage the risks safely. This campaign is an important step toward achieving that goal.”

Rob Shepheard Consultant Audiologist says “For nearly 4 decades I have treated countless individuals whose lives are greatly impacted by hearing loss and tinnitus. These conditions are extremely common with people working in or enjoying music rich environments. Although this sound induced injury is permanent, it is also 100% avoidable.”

“Sometimes it is not fully understood how much irreversible effect listening to loud sound can have on many aspects of our health and well-being. As the NTIA’s audiologist I am thrilled to see the work I have undertaken for the last 25 years in developing hearing health conservation taking shape in our “Listen For Life” Campaign, and to see the industry taking such a proactive step to maintain the health of everyone involved.”

Sonam Kaur Sehemby - Head of Clinical Training, Specsavers says” We as health care providers are passionate about delivering patient centred care and understanding the importance of hearing health through a coordinated national approach. Our partnership with the NTIA and our access to care report allows us to highlight the scale of impact that needs to be addressed and the steps we can take to start the conversation nationally.”

Biff Mitchell Festival Organiser says “When I started in the industry in the early 80’s there was no mention of looking after your hearing. I can remember one crew putting cigarette filters in his ears because it was so loud at a Motorhead show he had to go to medical as one got stuck… There was no education. The end result is pretty much everyone who worked in events back then has now got hearing problems, one friend now has only 45 % hearing.  I have had tinnitus for years, wearing ear protection has meant it’s not got worse and it's only noticeable at times. We can’t let this continue and hopefully this campaign will make a difference.”

What you may not know is that, according to the World Health Organisation, 1.1 billion young people between the ages of 12 and 35 are at risk of permanent hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices while enjoying recreational sounds, such as music. The Commission on Hearing Loss's 2014 report estimated the cost of hearing loss to the UK economy at £24.8 billion, a figure that could potentially rise to £38.6 billion by 2031.

Moreover, hearing loss can be a predisposing risk factor for dementia, with mild hearing loss doubling the risk, moderate hearing loss tripling it, and severe hearing loss quintupling the risk. One in six people in the UK is affected by hearing loss, and our collective goal, alongside partners and key stakeholders, is to reduce this number by raising an educational awareness so that people can safely enjoy music in their workplaces, social settings, and personal environments.

The NTIA is embarking on one of the most ambitious programs in the world to engage and inform all individuals involved in the music industry we all cherish. It is our mission to prevent unnecessary harm to their health, allowing them to continue enjoying music for years to come. The NTIA eagerly looks forward to collaborating with other organisations that share a sincere interest in preserving the health of everyone involved.
