Amsterdam Dance Event completes program and reveals new ADE Zen Space

2019 features a focus on France and celebrates the 100 year anniversary of electronic music instruments.

The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the world's largest club festival and business conference for electronic music, has finalised its program. Between the 16th and the 20th of October more than 2,500 artists and 600 speakers will take part in the event in Amsterdam. The organisers expect to welcome over 400,000 visitors from over 100 countries for the 24th edition.

In recent years, the Amsterdam Dance Event has become the most important breeding ground for electronic music culture. Besides the extensive conference and festival program, ADE highlights current technological and social trends as well as crossovers with other genres such as film and photography, making Amsterdam the meeting point for the global electronic music community.

100 years of electronic music | Focus on France
ADE traditionally kicks off on Wednesday, October 16th with an opening concert - this year featuring the British artist SOHN and the Metropole Orkest - and ends on Sunday with the ADE Hangover, a free city festival at the NDSM wharf. In addition to the previously announced focus on France, which includes a special program in De Balie and numerous emerging and established artists, this year's program also pays homage to 100 years of electronic music instruments, including a specially arranged museum in De Brakke Grond displaying special instruments, and hosting talks and workshops with pioneers from all over the world.

ADE Program
Additionally, the program puts the spotlight on sustainability, social innovation and other important themes such as mental health. Education and talent development are also taking centre stage, with multi-day programs ADE Sound Lab and ADE Univerisity for starting artists and young professionals, a Writers Camp in Vondel CS. 2019 also sees the return of ADE LIVE, the two-day program that offers a platform to emerging live talent. After the focus on South Korea last year, the musical growth of Asia is again strongly represented in the day and night program. The country pavilions in De Balie are set to return with special attention for Japan and China, among others.

ADE Zen Space
Next to this, the organisation is premiering the ADE Zen Space, a multi-day program in De Waalse Kerk in the center of Amsterdam where visitors can relax with a special sleeping concert, meditation and special audiovisual installations. The full cultural day program spreads over more than 40 locations with the Eye, Het Hem and Lab111 and as eye-catching locations.

Music Moves Europe
Music is one of the most popular forms of art, widely consumed, and a vibrant expression of Europe's cultural diversity. Music Moves Europe, the overarching framework for the European Commission’s initiatives and actions in support of the European music sector, and Creative Europe, the EU funding programme for the culture and audiovisual sectors, aim to help the music sector flourish by, among other things, supporting the annual Music Moves Europe Talent Awards.

The Music Moves Europe Talent Awards are organised by ESNS and Reeperbahn Festival in partnership with Yourope, Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA), International Music Managers Forum (IMMF), Liveurope, Live DMA, European Music Exporters Exchange (EMEE), Digital Music Europe (DME) and media partner European Broadcasting Union (EBU), with support from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Province of Groningen and the City of Groningen. The awards are implemented in close cooperation with the European Commission and financially supported by Creative Europe.

fabric brings XX Tour to No Sleep Festival with a Bicep debut in Belgrade

fabric, one of the world's leading clubs and a symbol of
London's nightlife, celebrates its 20th anniversary in Belgrade with
one of the UK’s most in-demand electronic duos, Bicep. Having presented its
musical outlook at Petrovaradin Fortress last summer, the London club is set to
return for the second edition of No Sleep Festival on Saturday 9th
November
. The fabric team bring the spirit of UK clubbing to a crowd of
several thousand clubbers, gathered in the Main Hangar, the gargantuan
warehouse set by the Danube at the Port of Belgrade. The programme is led by Bicep,
the Belfast-born duo, whose eponymous LP from 2017 found acclaim from all
corners of the electronic music world. While last year saw the pair touring the
world to present their celebrated live show, currently Andy Ferguson and Matt
McBriar are returning to their roots behind the decks. The bouncy grooves of Chicago
house and the electrifying energy of old school Detroit techno, mixed with the ravers’
favourite British acid-house, plus many more styles and influences including
their own euphoric dancefloor-ready productions, have made Bicep’s DJ
performances a unique experience on the global circuit.

To join what’s surely set to be one of Belgrade’s
parties of the year, fabric and the EXIT team have invited another of
electronic music’s top duos, Mind Against. The Italian pair have dropped
a series of killer tracks on labels like Life And Death, Afterlife, Cocoon and
Hotflush, many of which have been played by house and techno’s top hitters.
Having played around the globe, Alessandro and Federico Fognini are set to come
to Belgrade with a new set and material due for release next spring. Also
joining the bill is one of techno’s most promising stars on the rise, Anastasia
Kristensen
. The Danish artist returns to Serbia after debuting at EXIT in
2018, bringing the dynamic, high-energy sound that’s brought her attention
across electronic music’s entire playing field. As well as landing at a number
of major festivals, she’s released a number of fierce club tracks, including
remixes on fabric’s sister label, Houndstooth. It’s hard to imagine an anniversary
party without fabric’s resident DJs, and for their upcoming takeover, they
bring Terry Francis, who’s been responsible for commanding the club’s DJ
booths for the last two decades. He’s flanked by London selector Anna Wall,
who leads the next generation of fabric’s residents. This team of artists join
us to represent the sound of the London institution, telling the story of the
club’s unparalleled contribution to electronic music over the last 20 years.

No Sleep Festival 2018
- The Official Aftermovie:
https://youtu.be/uMwRkXvXLI8

After more than 25,000 clubbers entered dozens of No
Sleep Festival's parties last year, all spread on various locations accross the
city in a continuous 48-hour run, this year has already seen countless ravers
booking flights to Serbia’s hedonistic capital city. At the Main Hangar, on the
night before fabric's party, Belgian superstar Amelie Lens and Berghain mainstay Kobosil lead the bill. They will be joined by the duo Joyhauser, Lenske's hit producer Farrago, while the other parties in
clubs like Drugstore will have the acts announced soon to round out the
sleepless weekend of November 8th and 9th. Tickets and
more info can be found online at Nosleepfestival.com.

Created by the team behind the internationally praised EXIT festival,
the No Sleep music platform brings together some of the leading players and
brands of the global electronic and club scene for the fourth consecutive year.
No Sleep events have taken place in some of the largest world cities such as
New York, London, Moscow, Sao Paulo, Barcelona, Rome and others, while this
year, No Sleep returns to Belgrade, in its festival weekend format of multiple
parties at several different locations across the city. In addition to
spectacular events in the Port of Belgrade, various smaller parties take place
featuring some of the finest local talents, while the No Sleep Conference runs in parallel, hosting some of the
festival's leading acts as panelists.

Keynote Jonathan Poneman (Sub Pop)
In 1987 Jonathan Poneman partnered with Bruce Pavitt to found Sub Pop Records, which would grow out to be one of the most influential and groundbreaking independent labels. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the label became synonymous with the grunge sound created by so many of its early artists — including Soundgarden, Mudhoney and Nirvana, whose debut “Bleach” remains Sub Pop’s best-selling album. The label has expanded into multiple genres since Pavitt retired in the late 1990s. Successes over the past 20 years include The Shins, The Postal Service, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Beach House and Father John Misty.

Jonathan Poneman
was critical in the evolution of the company, the establishment of grunge, and
the development of the Seattle sound.
Sub Pop recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and remains one of the
world’s most vital independent labels, with over 50 million global record sales
and over $2 million donated to many nonprofit organizations.

Keynote Paul Hitchman (AWAL, Kobalt)
Paul is President of AWAL, Kobalt’s recorded music business. Prior to joining Kobalt in 2011, Paul was a co-founder of 3 prominent digital music companies: Playlouder, an early innovator in digital music; MSP, a white label music streaming and download platform; and CI, the market leader in digital supply chain services for the indie sector. Paul previously worked at BMG Music and Warner Music. He holds an Economics degree from Cambridge University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and has a history of curating many contemporary art projects.

Previously we announced that Martin Goldsmith (Cooking Vinyl) will travel to Groningen for a keynote, Rob Trommelen (MOJO) will host a beer crate and The Dickins Family - Barry, Lucy and Jonathan - will share a stage for the first time in history.

IMMF Management Masterclasses
Just like last year, ESNS  will organise music managers masterclasses together with the IMMF. The objective of the sessions is to engage artists, self-managed artists, managers and professionals in a networking environment. The music industry is always evolving, we are always learning, this event is ideal for anyone looking to develop their knowledge. Across two hours participants will meet 8 experts who will share their experiences across 4 topics: Brand, Songs, Live, Deals, and reflect through tips and insights on what they wish someone had told them earlier in their career.

A Greener Festival Environmental Assessor Training
This 2 full day classroom training is coming to ESNS for the first time, taking place in the days leading up to ESNS, January 14th & 15th. A Greener Festival has developed this course drawing upon more than a decades experience in assessing festivals and events around the world. Training focuses on the key operational issues of events which create an impact on the environment developing the knowledge and skills of participants to undertake environmental assessments.

Costs for the
course are £399 + VAT. You can apply by sending your CV or profile and cover
note to training@agreenerfestival.com. More info here.

YES Group Health & Safety Seminar
YES Group is the Event Safety Group of Yourope, the European festival association. Since 2000, the YES Group has been at the forefront of event and crowded space safety in Europe, organising Health & Safety Seminars for event organisers.  The seminars cover topics like: crisis communication, emergency planning, psychological pressure in incident decision-making, implementing crisis management within the organisation and  aftermath after emergency.

The YES seminars are managed by a steering committee from within the event and festival industry. These seminars are free to attend for Yourope members. For further information about Yourope membership, please visit www.yourope.org

ESNS Podcast S01E03: Cutting out the Middle Man
Imagine a world where labels are a thing of the past, where more or less every act bypasses the process that we all assumed was cast in stone, and then suddenly that kind of mass disruption, which would affect thousands and thousands of jobs, really does seem like a big deal. But as streaming platforms mature as businesses it is merely logical that they should seek to expand and deepen their relationships with artists. But where does leave the labels, and what can they do to stay relevant and useful? And how does all this impact on the artists? Who will do their marketing and who will have their back when things aren’t going so well? with Ric Salmon, ATC Management (GB), Stephen O’Reilly, ie:music (IE) Cliff  Fluet, Eleven Advisory (GB) and Rachael Patterson, K7 (GB). Moderated by Gary Smith.

OCTAVE ONE ANNOUNCE ‘LOCUS OF CONTROL’ VOLUME 2

Musically we are
exploring the ‘power or powerlessness people feel over the things that shape
their world’

Building on the success of Vol 1, Detroit pioneers Octave One now serve up Locus of Control Volume 2, continuing their journey of exploration of power or powerlessness over what moves one’s world.

This EP comes after a busy series of
shows for the most famous live act in all of techno, with them recently having
played everywhere from Piknic Électronik Montréal to Movement to Dimensions
Festival and many more. The show is an all new audio-visual experience for 2019
and continues to keep them at the forefront of the scene despite more than 30
years of experience. Locus of Control Part 2 follows a remix of Giorgia Angiuli
and lands on their own 430 West label once more.

This EP series takes its name from a
psychological concept that refers to how strongly people believe they have
control over the situations and experiences that affect their lives. Part 1
showcased euphoric piano stabs and uplifting drum lines, and Part 2 explores
more propulsive techno.

Up first, ‘Afrotech’ is a seven minute
techno adventure. It’s built on sleek, crisp drums with twisted synths writhing
about up top. The devil is in the detail and the way the synths are subtly
tweaked throughout to make for a most dynamic journey once more from these
brillaint brothers.

The excellent ‘Detune’ is a futuristic
track with layers of shiny metallic drums and taught synth riffs that make for
a tense and thrilling ride. Big drums power things along and the whole thing is
the sort of sensory overload that will blow up even the biggest warehouse
parties and festival stages.

These are two more
powerful tracks from the ever essential Octave One.

The EP is set for release on 11th October via the 430 West.

Helping European Talent cross borders
ETEP invests in the geographical spread of artists by working together with 130 festivals from 38 countries. Attracting a total of 7.716.250 visitors each year, the 130 festivals participating in ETEP create a huge potential audience for ETEP acts. Additionally, the programme offers artists from all European countries the chance to participate. In 2019 this resulted in acts from 27 countries performing at festivals in 32 countries.

Some new frontiers were crossed this year with Fontaines D.C., Farveblind, Karpov not Kasparov and Say Yes Dog playing the first Russian ETEP shows at Stereoleto in July and in November, Boy Azooga will play the first ever Hong Kong ETEP show at Clockenflap.

About ETEP
The European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) was introduced in 2003 to stimulate the exchange of European artists across Europe, and would not be possible without the funding of the support programmes for culture by the European Union. ETEP has been one of the very first programmes to support popular music on a European level. Currently ETEP receives funding by the sub-programme "Culture" as part of Creative Europe. To find out more about Creative Europe, please check ec.europa.eu/programmes/creative-europe.

An initiative of ESNS, ETEP facilitates the bookings of European acts on European & international festivals outside their home countries and generates extensive media exposure for these artists in cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) public radio stations, as well as national and international media. Additionally, ETEP actively cooperates with 16 music export offices. This way, ETEP aims to give a boost to the international careers of European artists and highlights the participating ETEP festivals.

Since the start of the programme in 2003 ETEP has facilitated 4.372 shows by 1604 acts in 37 countries, and we are very proud to have contributed to the careers of so many talented European acts. Many acts that received support from ETEP at the start of their careers have grown out to be very successful. Over the past 17 years, acts such as Agnes Obel, Ásgeir, Ben Howard, Benjamin Clementine, Calvin Harris, Franz Ferdinand, James Blake, MØ, Noisia, Selah Sue, The Editors, The Kooks, The XX, Within Temptation and Years & Years have greatly benefited from the support of the ETEP programme. More recently, acts such as Idles, Shame, Alma, Aurora and Dua Lipa played some of their first international shows with the support of the European Talent Exchange Programme.

Lowlands is gearing up for it's 27th edition this month.

Priding itself in supplying top notch facilities for its visitors in a way British festivals can’t seem to match, Lowlands has a wellness village with saunas, hot tubs and sports facilities, dozens of restaurants from all corners of the earth, food and drink stalls, a large market with everything from clothes and vinyl stores to a barber’s shop, its own currency, a local radio station, a daily newspaper and, last but not least: seven luxury campsites with flushable toilets, hot showers and dressing tables. You really can have it all and camp in comfort and style.

The line ups pretty damn good too! Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots, De Staat, A$AP Rocky, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, The National, New Order, Royal Blood, Anne-Marie, Bear’s Den, Billie Eilish, Franz Ferdinand, Giorgio Moroder, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, James Blake, Jon Hopkins and many more.

Holland has no shortage of festivals packing out the summer season, but Lowlands is the country’s most iconic music event that’s been delivering lost weekends since 1993. The festival takes place in the northern rural area of Biddinghuizen, roughly an hour by train from Amsterdam’s super-connected Schiphol Airport, so it scores plenty of extra bonus points for being one of Europe’s easiest festivals to plan logistically.

A Campingflight To Lowlands Paradise — to give it its full celebratory name — is one of Europe’s premier festivals, an expressive, open and creative adventure with a wildly diverse line-up of musicians, artists, thinkers and dreamers pitching together for the biggest weekend of the year.

The festival takes place in the northern rural area of Biddinghuizen, roughly an hour by train from Amsterdam’s super-connected Schiphol Airport, so it scores plenty of extra bonus points for being one of Europe’s easiest festivals to plan logistically.

From the main arenas to pop-up stages, installations and other one-off happenings, hundreds of performers are on site to steer Lowlands campers in all manner of left-field directions over a giddy four days. This year a few big headline acts include Tame Impala, The National, Billie Eilish, New Order, A$AP Rocky and Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals, but there’s so much more to discover below the surface.

Here are six reasons to pack your tent and take a flight to Lowlands Paradise…

1.They’re smooth operators
We’ve already mentioned Schiphol Airport’s convenience as a hub flying from anywhere in Europe, and the 70km to Biddinghuizen is just a short train and shuttle bus away (and the shuttle bus to nearby Lelystad runs all day for supplies).
Once you’re in, forget about previous horror stories of missing bands while standing in half-hour queues for gruesome portaloos or having your buzz drained in a bar queue that lasts as long as a DJ set. There’s virtually no queues at Lowlands for food, drink or toilets. It’s not exactly a hot take — they simply hire enough bar staff and make sure there are enough bars and toilets around.
And their ‘Munten’ token system makes things even easier – you just buy tokens from dozens of vending machines around the festival and campsites and use them at bars and food stalls so there’s no waiting for change. And you’ve probably guessed, you won’t have to queue for these vending machines either.

2.Happy campers everywhere
Campsites at all the major UK festivals have slowly been getting better over the years, but the bar was set pretty low, from horror stories of tents being set on fire, mile-long queues for meagre facilities and trash piles that would cause Wall-E to short circuit.

Even though Lowlands has 60,000 party heads roaming around, the campsites have a more boutique festival vibe, with an emphasis on ample space and well-tended facilities. There’s no drudgery involved after your wake-up – there’s an abundance of toilets, showers and food stalls, and even art installations and games areas. And very importantly, there are plenty of bins and everyone gets a recycle bag – there’s virtually no litter.

And this is only the ‘regular’ campsites. If you want next-level treatment, the Gllamcamp area has you covered, with a range of canvas tipis, yurts and bell tents, mini cabins, quirky wooden ‘motels’ and even a welcome lobby with a fire pit. And even if you’re traipsing back in the early hours after a rave you’ll have relative silence to drift off.

3.The lost weekend inclusive atmosphere
The Dutch are famed for their work ethic and unwavering ability to make things run smoothly, but they’re also European league leaders in partying, illustrated by their huge number of festivals and famous clubbing scenes in cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

There’s a rule at Lowlands and that’s once you’re in, you’re in — it’s an inclusive party to let off steam for four days. You can’t buy day tickets, so when you get your wristband and walk through the gates on Thursday you’re there with everyone for the long haul until Monday morning — no giddy fresh faces gatecrashing on Sunday and taking over.

Organiser Eric van Eerdenburg says: “If you come to Campingflight you come in on Thursday and leave on Monday, there are no fresh virgin spirits coming in! On Sunday, people may be going berserk, but people are connected all over the field — it’s a dream place.”
And even if everyone’s going berserk, you won’t find any marauding belligerent drunkenness – maybe due to the Dutch liberal drug laws.

4.Higher learning
All too often music festivals are an arms race to see how many brain cells you can blitz before Monday morning, but Lowlands is one festival that might send you home smarter than when you arrived.

It’s a true music and arts festival, with sculptures, installations and performance art on display at all times. Music is also only one of the categories on the programme, which also includes comedy, theatre, dance, literature, philosophy and arthouse cinema. It’s hardly recommended, but you could theoretically go to Lowlands and have a fulfilling weekend without seeing any bands.

The non-music programme isn’t relegated to the sidelines, but the activism, debates, seminars, workshops, lectures and readings are an integral part of the whole Lowlands experience.

5.Strike a pose at the vogue performance workshop
To dive in feet first at Lowlands it’s better to recalibrate your body clock and flip to nocturnal mode, if only to catch the early hours electronic artists DJing at various corners of the site. And chances are, if you’re not Dutch you may already feel like you’re lagging behind with your dancing when you spot the locals’ famous shuffle-step ‘Konijnendans’ techno steps.

But Dutch dance pioneers House of Vineyard are at Lowlands this year to welcome you into the ballroom community and reprogram your two left feet with a vogue performance workshop. Vogueing was created by gay and transgender people in the 70s and 80s in New York black and Latino communities as a form of escapism from discrimination through flamboyant dance battles. Popularised in the mainstream by Madonna’s 1990 hit, Vogue culture has been a huge influence on artists such Beyonce, Rihanna and FKA Twigs, while scene terms like ‘throwing shade’ are part of the everyday youth culture lexicon.

Here’s a chance to engage with a vibrant, defiant, inclusive subculture, and look good while doing it.

6.A sense of history
The current incarnation of Lowlands has evolved from its beginnings in 1993, with a line-up crammed with crucial alt-rock acts such as Smashing Pumpkins, Jesus Lizard, The Breeders, Tool and Rage Against the Machine. After a break, the festival returned in 2000 and has returned every year since.

Since the turn of the millennium, Lowlands has helped shape and reflect popular underground music, from blockbuster headliners to catching acts on their way up. The list of iconic acts to play Lowlands is staggering, and includes The Sex Pistols, Grace Jones, Faith No More, Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Prodigy, Arcade Fire, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Nine Inch Nails, LCD Soundsystem, The Knife, Portishead, Kendrick Lamar, Noel Gallagher, Philip Glass, Solange, Patti Smith and literally thousands more.

And let’s not forget that the whole magic was started in the late 60s with a Flight To Lowlands Paradise, with Dutch acts playing the first edition in 1967 and a little upcoming British act by the name of Pink Floyd headlining in 1968…

A Campingflight To Lowlands Paradise really is the ultimate summer holiday extravaganza!

Line up includes; Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots, De Staat, A$AP Rocky, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, The National, New Order, Royal Blood, Anne-Marie, Bear’s Den, Billie Eilish, Franz Ferdinand, Giorgio Moroder, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, James Blake, Jon Hopkins and many more.
