The tour supports the release of their recent album ‘Love by Machine’. Quickly selling out as a double vinyl package, the Burden brothers are bringing the experience live with reworkings of the album tracks as well as incorporating new, unreleased material into the form of ‘Love by Machine’ live.

Love by Machine is a nod to the fact that the Burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. Both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward-thinking performers in the game today.

Say Lenny: “We’ve been exploring the theme of connection with this project. How technology gives us the illusion that we are closer to each other more than ever. At some point humanity crossed a line where the devices that we created to bring us together are the same devices that are blocking us from organic experiences.”

“Technology is only a tool, which we also had in mind during the recording process.” Adds Lawrence. “We decided to go back to how we used to make our records, when we didn’t have so many ‘sophisticated’ audio devices. Back to when we interacted in the studio together as musicians.”

The first Sziget was organized in 1993 by Károly Gerendai, promoter back in the days, and Péter Sziámi Müller, musician-poet. Since, Sziget has followed a super-exciting path. In 1993 the festival hosted 43.000 people to enjoy 200 music, 80 film and 40 theatre performances. In contrary last year’s Sziget hosted 496.000 people with almost a thousand program at more than 50 venues. Not just the number of people and programs has increased rapidly, but also the budget of the 7-day event: in 1993 the total budget was around 83.000 EUR, while this year the total budget is close to 2.2 million EUR.

Sziget started out as a cultural picnic organized for a bunch of friends, while today it holds the prestigious awards for Best Major European Festival twice, Best Line-Up Festival and just recently the Artists’ Favourite Festival. Sziget is not only the biggest tourist attraction of Hungary, but also the most well-know Hungarian brand. Szitizens arrive from more than 100 countries each year, who spend more than 42 million EURs while being at Sziget. The festival has contributed to the GPD of Hungary in the last 24 years with 320 million EUR. The Sziget budget includes only 1% public funds, but the festival pays back in forms of taxes more than 16 million EUR. This year organizers are expecting the 8 millionth visitor.

Although Sziget is proud to have all awards received during the past 24 years, the biggest achievement of all was to define Sziget and to find the uniqueness of the special vibe created during the 7-days. Also called the Island of Freedom, Károly Gerendai added at the press conference: “When talking about the content and program of Sziget we don’t necessarily think only of the headliner concerts, but all the small, colourful, spectacular and unique programs, that cannot be replicated. These can only be seen and felt at those given moments, when Szitizens wander around the island. These programs fill up the ‘Soul of Sziget’.”

The program structure of Sziget is one of the most diverse in the world. Besides all big music stages, Sziget has a world music stage for 17 years now, promoting colourful world music from all around the world. Understanding and feeling Roma culture has always been a key issue to the festival, Roma musicians have been present at the festival for more than a decade now. Sziget also supports the LGBTQ community with spectacular variety shows, awareness-raising film screenings, discussions, all at the Magic Mirror venue, that is one of the most popular venues on the island. Hungarian culture holds a real importance to Sziget, therefore a specially dedicated venue, the Hungarikum Village, shows the most iconic elements of Hungarian culture. NGOs are represented on the island for 25 years now, so Szitizens can meet various NGOs working in Hungary and abroad. Szitizens with disability are also welcome to the island, even alone as they can now ask for the assistance of the Let’s Go Out Association. In the heart of the festival every year the Giant Street Theatre brings a spectacular performance, while the various street theatres and circus performances have now become a must-see element of the program. A venue dedicated solely to classical music and jazz is also part of the Sziget vibe, while a special focus is once again put on the decoration of the whole area.

Tamás Kádár, CEO of Sziget Cultural Management and successor of Gerendai, has added: “Art of Freedom, once again received hundreds of applications from all over the world. The project teams show us an unbelievable new world with their imagination. These could be seen on the island in forms of giant installations and statues. Thanks to the enthusiastic artists Sziget will be decorated with amazing art, once again.”

Sziget works every year to enhance its green operations. This year the main focus will be to tackle the waste of drinkable water, so after receiving all necessary authorization, Sziget can start to decrease the amount of drinkable water used for various operations. According to the plans, the water of the Danube would be used for decreasing dust or using the Danube water as weight for ballast tanks. Thanks to last years’ radical changes, in 2016 150 cubic meter recycled waste was collected on a daily basis and 35% of this was re-used. This year 5 recycling centres will await Szitizens to change their waste to gifts and 150 re-cycling points will be installed. In addition, last year more than 2000 tents and camping accessories were collected and given to charity. Starting this year all catering units and bars will have the obligation to use only plates and cutlery that are completely biodegradable. No plastic bags will be allowed at any commercial units, all these objects will have to be biodegradable as well.

Besides developing the sustainability of the festival, Sziget carries important messages. In 2017, Sziget joined the program called Take a Stand, initiated by Yourope- The European Festival Association. Take a Stand focuses on involving and encouraging festival-visitors to take part in public life. The main issues are cultural tolerance, solidarity towards minorities and openness to mutual learning. Besides Sziget many other festivals joined this initiative as Roskilde, Exit and Lollapalooza.

This year Sziget continued a strong cooperation with Viber, one of the leading global messaging apps, and teamed up for a new, exciting adventure for their global fans – Mission: Szitizen by Viber. Sziget fans now have the opportunity to complete challenges via Viber to win VIP experiences and more amazing prizes at the festival available only to the Mission:Szitizen winning teams. Viber and Sziget continue to build the future of festival communications and a truly special festival experience. All fans can now embark on a unique festival journey through Viber and get a real-life taste of the party atmosphere via Sziget’s Chat Bot: http://chats.viber.com/sziget

„Viber and Sziget started a long-term strategic partnership in 2016, and we’ll continue to use the most innovative technologies to bring fans closer to previously unimagined experiences. Entertaining artificial intelligence, instant personal recommendations and dynamic visualizations will lead the users to the new era of the festival realm.” said Atanas Raykov, Director Business Development CEE & CIS, Viber

Nina Kraviz, Rødhåd and Nicole Moudaber Join EXIT Dance Arena Line Up

This year’s fast approaching EXIT Festival continues to announce headliners for its one-of-a-kind-spot, the revered Dance Arena. The sunrise at this colossal two-level fortress trench is considered as one of the life-changing experiences with many major global media outlets writing about it in awe. This feeling gets even more special on the last morning when all the other stages finish and the “pilgrimage” towards the Arena begins with people marching to bid farewell to another festival edition. The privilege to close this year’s EXIT belongs to one of the most significant artists of the global electronic scene – Nina Kraviz! The Siberian tastemaker is known for her musically uncompromising and energetic DJ sets where she plays music most others wouldn't dare. In the last year, her closing sets, seen only at selected festivals, got the whole planet talking. The final night at the Arena will also feature the modern techno sound of the Berlin hero Rødhåd, Nigerian-Lebanese DJ star Nicole Moudaber, our internationally acclaimed selector Tijana T, and the duo of rising domestic techno producers, Scalameriya and Ilija Djoković. The furious techno bill on Sunday, July 9th will be rounded by one more global headliner whose name will soon be revealed, together with the rest of the line-up at this year's Dance Arena.

EXIT 2016 | Nina Kraviz @ mts Dance Arena: https://youtu.be/WJnhTXQ6a9Y

Last summer Nina Kraviz conquered the largest European fortress with ease, and as she confirmed later in the VICE’s documentary about the phenomenon of EXIT’s iconic stage, the spectacular sight of the morning at the Arena was etched deep in her memory. Since the last visit, Nina published a superb mix for London’s fabric CD series, and recently also launched her new label GALAXIID, sister to трип, in the British capital's new venue, Printworks. She is resident at Cocoon in Ibiza and has been announced as a special guest at Afterlife, along with this year’s main electronic events who have her listed as the absolute headliner. For her return to Serbia this summer, Nina chose EXIT and the special “closing set” at the Arena!

Nicole Moudaber also remembers well what kind of energy can be felt from the hollow at the ends of the fortress and she decided to put EXIT on her calendar list, which is usually booked well ahead! The techno heroine and probably the favorite performer of her mentor, Carl Cox, has been showered with praise by the world media, and her sets, apart from Exit are also featured at almost all other major festivals. As one of the new icons of Ibiza, she is a confirmed guest at the popular residencies held by Marco Carolla and, of course, Carl Cox!

After Rødhåd had proven his dedication to local clubbers for the third year in a row, this summer it is time for his first ever EXIT! One of the most sought-after techno producers of today, apart from performing at the most important festivals, is a regular in well-known clubs, such as Berghain, Concrete and Fuse. His Dystopian label releases tracks from new generation of stars, such as Recondite, Vril, Alex.Do, as well as the EXIT's very own Tijana T! After scratching almost all important clubs of our time from her to-do list, such as Berghain, Space, Fuse, Corsica Studios, Bassiani, The Block, and many others, Tijana has some of the leading electronic music events in her itinerary for this year. It is also time to return to the place that she rightfully considers her “own”, from the days when she was the EXIT's spokesperson – to the majestic Dance Arena!

Join the EXIT fans’ favorite special offer, which allows the entire crew to buy four all-day tickets for EXIT, four three-day ones for Sea Dance, or four tickets for the entire Exit Adventure, and receive a fifth ticket for free! A very limited amount of tickets for this group deal is available at http://www.exitfest.org/en/tickets. Accommodation and travel arrangements can be found at Exit’s official travel agency, ExitTrip. https://www.exittrip.org/en

EXIT Team will connect four festivals this year, in Croatia, Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro into a great EXIT Summer of Love 2017. EXIT Festival will take place at the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad from July 5 to 9, featuring The Killers, Liam Gallagher, Years & Years, Rag'n'Bone Man, Jake Bugg, Paul Kalkbrenner, Hardwell, Solomun b2b Dixon, Jamie Jones, Black Coffee, Hot Since 82, Duke Dumont, Robin Schulz, Alan Walker, Lost Frequencies, Noisia, Foreign Beggars, Princess Nokia, Discharge, The Damned, Black Dahlia Murder, Recondite, Dax J, Function, Antigone b2b Francois X and many others.

Eurosonic Noorderslag 2018 focuses on Denmark

At this year’s SPOT Festival in Aarhus, Eurosonic Noorderslag presented Denmark as its focus for 2018. Booker Robert Meijerink comments, We have been amazed by the quality and diversity of Danish acts that performed at Eurosonic in the past. Lots of Danish artists are making great music and are successful worldwide. The Danish music-scene is booming: a great reason to put the focus on Denmark.”

The Danish export office MXD sees the focus as a great honor. “We all have seen Eurosonic grow over the years to become one of the most important festivals and music launching platforms on the face of planet earth.” Says MXD CEO Thomas Rohde. “ Denmark has supported and been engaged in the festival since the very beginning, so it’s an immense delight to have been offered the opportunity to be focus country in 2018. The moment is also ideal – The Danish scene is booming across many genres, so we will come with quite a treat to the Dutch audiences and international music professionals.”

Each year Eurosonic Noorderslag highlights a different country, showcasing the diverse musical talent across Europe. The choice for Denmark was easily made. Since the very early years of the festival, Eurosonic established a fruitful relationship with Denmark; the Danish music-scene and partners MXD Rosa, P6 Beat and P3 Radio.

Danish acts are also regular winners of The European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA) with a host of acts such as Agnes Obel, Lukas Graham and MØ who have gone onto to have strong international careers.

Eurosonic Noorderslag have also previously booked several Danish acts, including: Agnes Obel, Alex Vargas, Alphabeat, Broken Twin, Communions, Efterklang, Iceage, Kashmir, LISS, Liima, Lowly, Lukas Graham, Mew, MØ and Whomadewho.

Sarah Sølvsteen from Birds Eye Agency tells what Eurosonic Noorderslag means to her work, when she books artists such as MØ to festivals and venues around the world:

“Eurosonic is quite simply the showcase festival where you get to play for the largest possible amount of European promoters and festivals at once. So with the right timing in regards to the artist’s development, there are incredibly good chances of making concrete results and deals. MØ played Eurosonic for the first time in 2013. At that time, she still wasn’t signed to any foreign label, so it was early in her career. Nevertheless, she had received great exposure on different American and British blogs, and in the industry in general, so people came to her show at Eurosonic. This immediately resulted in several deals with European promoters and got on the bill for several European festivals. The next year, she played there again… New offers on the table… All this amounted to her shows selling out in many European cities, before she even got a radio hit.”

As well as the music, Denmark also has an impressive number of successful festivals such as Roskilde, Tinderbox and Northside that Eurosonic Noorderslag partners with through its European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP).

Danish music grows abroad
For the second consecutive year, global music sales grew in 2016. According to IFPI (trade association of the music companies) the increase in sales amounted to 5,6%[1].

The Danish artists have gotten a solid share of the global sales. Koda, who represents the Danish right holders, recounts in their newly released annual report that the revenue from international sales has increased by 32% from 2015 to 2016[2].

Furthermore, Koda states that the revenue from streaming increased by 49% in 2016. The Danes are streaming like never before. This represents a great opportunity for growth in Danish music export. When the Danes stream relatively more than in other countries, the Danish music consumption (which consists of a great amount of Danish music) can amount to good placements on international charts and the most important playlists.

Lukas Graham, MØ, Volbeat, Trentemøller, Thomas Troelsen, Kölsch and Martin Jensen are all examples of Danes, who cemented their position on the international music stage in 2016.

About the artists

CUT_
Electronic duo CUT_ took off rapidly after their rendition of Stromae’s ‘Papaoutai’ went viral. CUT_ has since then played numerous shows, including performances at Lowlands, PITCH, ADE, Eurosonic and various appearances on Dutch national television. CUT_ released their first single on [PIAS]  “Tune In Tune Out” (mixed and co-produced by Leo Abrahams), which was released late last year. Focusing on encompassing the full spectrum of artistry, CUT_ have made video and visuals an important part of their image, as well as trying to excel in their live shows.  “We find that live shows are a way to really distinguish yourself as an artist nowadays, especially when, like in our case, the music is focused on electronic production. We make a point of doing everything live.” (Sebastiaan Dutilh: production & songwriting)

Dakota
Do you know that feeling? That feeling of wanting to lay back on the couch, close your eyes and drift away to dreamy and hazy music? The Netherlands’ Dakota do just that. Dakota’s new project titled “Leda” blends Psychedelic guitar riffs with indie-pop roots, coming together into a neatly packaged 6 track EP. But don’t let this lo fi charm fool you, the live show of this four piece band gets you to the edge of your seat. They seamlessly blend California feels with Garage Rock and Dream Pop. Look out for Dakota as they make their way in the underground pop scene.

Jameszoo
The word ‘naive’ comes from the Latin ‘nativus’, meaning native, or natural. Today, to be naive is often seen as pejorative, a lack of experience or judgement, but in the art world the word retained some of its original meaning: a quality acquired through birth, a childlike innocence and wonder that produces spontaneous, unaffected art. For Mitchel Van Dinther, the Dutch producer known as Jameszoo, it is this quality that lies at the heart of his debut album released last year, Fool, which he calls “naive, computer jazz.”  Van Dinther emerged from the small town of Den Bosch in the southern Netherlands in the late 2000s. First as a DJ – with wide-ranging crates of avant-garde jazz, prog and kraut rock, electronic experiments, and beat oddities – and then as a producer capable of impressive sonic and rhythmic incongruities. This spring, Van Dinther joins Brainfeeder with an album that fits right into the label’s expanding take on the modern evolution of jazz music.

Kim Janssen
Kim Janssen was born in The Netherlands but raised in Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Kathmandu. His music could be categorized as pop, and it's swinging in tone from dark to blinding technicolor, with glossy synths, huge orchestral arrangements and Kim's vocal - at times a Bill Callahan-esque croon, at times a soaring falsetto. His latest album, 'Cousins', was recorded across three years and several studios. The album features contributions from Marla Hansen (Sufjan Stevens, The National) and Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson (Sigur Rós) and was mixed by Chris Coady (Beach house, Future Islands) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Graceland).

Klangstof
There’s a patience at play in Klangstof’s aural creations: the musician is a craftsman when constructing the chilling sound that comprises his stunning debut album, Close Eyes to Exit. It’s there in the crisp, slow-building single “Hostage,” electric guitars gently strummed, electronic beats like a rising heartbeat, all giving way to full-throated release: “I ran for shelter/But I got there,” he intones. Or in the way “Sleaze” shifts from whispered confession (“Nintendo is the only thing that makes me smile”) to propulsive, rainbow-hued synths at a moment’s notice.

Pip Blom
Never listen to people who want to change your music. With that advice from a fellow musician Amsterdam based Pip Blom (20) started making songs. At first with just a three string Loog guitar with the 14 track demo album Short Stories (2013) as the result.  Three years later the sound has changed completely. Gone is the ‘girl with little guitar’. Enter electric guitars, bass and drums. But it is still all Pip.

OFF Festival Katowice: From Polish legends of Jazz to a British legends of punk rock

From Polish legends who flipped the world of jazz on its head, to a British legend that transmogrified punk rock. Plus a host of new names that are just beginning to write legends of their own.

Łoskot
The long-awaited return of a Polish band whose name translates to “racket,” one of the leading acts in the homegrown genre known as yass. Łoskot is back with a lineup that features Mikołaj Trzaska, Olo Walicki, Piotr Pawlak, and Macio Moretti. Some might brush it off as a harmless trip down memory lane for those of us who experienced the yass revolution as it happened and a history lesson for younger audiences. But we all know how ruthless Mikołaj and company can be, and that means that anything can happen at this show—and is unlikely to ever happen again.

The Men
We’re attentive observers of the new punk scene emerging across the pond and we jump at the opportunity to invite its representatives to the OFF Festival, so it was only a matter of time before this happened. Coming to Katowice straight out of Brooklyn’s best garages, it’s The Men! A band that’s just as respectful of tradition—from The Velvet Underground to Fugazi—as it is willing to veer off into noisy realms as distant as country music. And as you’ll hear on their outstanding records Open Your Heart, New Moon, and Devil Music, as well as their live shows, The Men take their noise seriously. We’ll find out just how seriously soon enough.

Mitch & Mitch
This allegedly Warsaw-based band sounds suspiciously Brazilian. Their faces might ring a bell, but they’ve still got plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Mitch & Mitch have been an OFF Festival mainstay from the start. They’ve played everything from country music and cover songs that you wish they had composed, to Zbigniew Wodecki classics that (luckily) he composed and they helped him dust off—and it’s always been top notch. They recently released a new album featuring the Brazilian producer Kassine, titled Visitantes Nordestinos, which will certainly find its way into their setlist. But who cares: we’re going to dance to whatever they play.

Oliver Coates
A British cellist, composer and producer whose work you may have heard on the recent Radiohead album A Moon Shaped Pool, as well as on recordings by artists such as Massive Attack and Actress. Luckily this Royal Academy of Music graduate and member of the illustrious London Contemporary Orchestra still finds time for solo projects, and his latest album Upstepping is a singular blend of classical and dance music, from deep house to footwork. They say his live shows can leave you confused: do you focus and listen or let your body follow the rhythm?

Ryley Walker
Joining us from Rockford, Illinois is Ryley Walker. He’ll be bringing his guitar, an instrument he’s fully mastered and uses to compose intricate and charming songs. Ryley’s music combines two traditions: that of psychedelic hippie music that rambles on and on, and that of folk music, or perhaps blues storytellers who sing it raw and simple, like life itself. His latest record, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, contains (as the title suggests) plenty of gold that’ll shine beautifully in the August sun.

C Duncan
This singer/composer’s debut album, Architect, was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize, while his sophomore release, The Midnight Sun (2016), merely confirmed that the title of Scotland’s most sensitive musician is well deserved. C Duncan has an unparalleled ability to combine the elegance of classical music with the sugary asceticism of dream pop. No one could possibly sound better on a beautiful summer night.

Kornél Kovács
A Hungarian by heritage, a Swede by birth and upbringing, and a global citizen by choice, DJ/producer Kornél Kovács combines dance music influences from across the globe, from Africa, through the Balearic Islands, to Detroit. In 2010 he joined Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist to launch Studio Barnhus, which released Kovács’s debut album, The Bell (2016), an unpretentious collection of cheerful yet intelligent music. We’re going to dance to this.

Idles
There isn’t much to talk about here: this is a band you just have to hear and see. Idles hail from Bristol and are said to have formed just to dance on the grave of the local independent music scene. They play post punk that they themselves describe as occasionally unlistenable, but they’re wrong about that. Their full-length album Brutalism is a solid LP of excellent music, but it doesn’t tell the whole truth about the band. They only reveal their true faces at their wild, shameless and fierce live shows.

Lor
Last year’s sensation Lor are coming into their own on the Polish independent music scene. These four extraordinarily talented teens from Krakow met in music school and got together to make magic. This story opens with the charming song/video “Windmill” and continues with a series of enthusiastically reviewed shows. And their fascinating tale is only getting started…

Bastard Disco
This Warsaw quartet is clearly inspired by American hardcore and noise rock, but they’ve developed their own original sound. The LP Warsaw Wasted Youth has certainly been one of the most successful guitar-driven debuts on the Polish scene in recent years. Their concerts are equal parts energy and hypnosis.

We regret to announce that Daniel Johnston will not be joining us at the OFF Festival. Due to health problems, the artist will not be able to tour Europe this summer. We’re certain that Daniel will get better and perform for us in the future. His absence leaves a pretty significant hole in the lineup, but luckily we’ve managed to invite another independent music legend, this time from the UK:
This Is Not This Heat

That’s right: This Is Not This Heat is not This Heat. But the band does follow in the footsteps of the legendary British band, with Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward at the helm. In their day This Heat was was among the few British bands to offer a meaningful response to Europe’s Krautrock revolution, and in doing so nudged the punk scene in a more avant garde direction. Their two albums—This Heat and Deceit—were enough to inspire an entire generation, from Sonic Youth to Massive Attack, from Radiohead to Caribou. And we’re proud and happy to announce that they’ll be playing at the OFF Festival.
