OFF Festival Katowice 2016: Minor Victories, DJ Koze, Show Me The Body and more
Many of the artists we’re announcing today have already appeared at the OFF Festival, just not with this music and under these names. That just makes us all the more excited to have them back. Please welcome Minor Victories, Liima, Zimpel/Ziołek, Mutoid Man, Powell, and Mass Gothic.
Minor Victories
The term “supergroup” is frequently abused as a way of selling new ideas by old artists, but what else would call a band that brings together Slowdive vocalist Rachel Goswell, Mogwai guitarist Stuart Braithwaite, Editors guitarist Justin Lockey, and his brother James Lockey (bass and, with Justin, the co-creator of the Hand Held Cine Club video collective)? Minor Victories insist that we just call them a band, because they’re not a short-lived flight of fancy, nor a “project,” but a group founded on the members’ shared musical interests, an act that’s going to be here for years to come. We’re still waiting for their eponymous debut album, slated for release in June on Play It Again Sam, featuring a duet by Goswell and guest artists Marek Kozelek. We’ll have enough time between June and August to memorize the album, which is currently being promoted with the excellent single “A Hundred Ropes.”
Liima
This Danish-Finnish group, based mainly out of Berlin, is releasing their first album, featuring the single “Amerika,” through a legendary British label: it’s a small world after all. The band is called Liima and comprises the phenomenal Finnish drummer Tatu Rönkkö together with Mads, Casper, and Rasmus, whom you might remember from the band Efterklang, which has always been pretty keen on rhythm. Liima’s first album, ii, comes out in late March on 4AD and we think it’s safe to say that this is going to be one of the most interesting debuts of the year.
Zimpel / Ziołek
Wacław Zimpel is a renowned clarinetist and a brilliant improviser, one who combines his classical education with free jazz and an inquisitive approach to roots music. He’s best known for his contributions to such bands as Hera, The Light, and Wacław Zimpel Quartet, as well as his excellent solo album, Lines, released in February. The eternal explorer Kuba Ziołek is a familiar face at the OFF Festival. The list of bands he’s collaborated with is just as impressive as Zimpel’s, but we would be remiss not to mention a few: Stara Rzeka, Alameda 5, Ed Wood, Innercity Ensemble, Kapital, and T’ien Lai. Put together, Zimpel and Ziołek are equal parts potential and mystery: could there be a better reason to see this concert?
Mutoid Man
Buzz! Yes, that’s the right word: there’s been quite a buzz about this band, and it started before anyone had even heard a single note. No wonder: Mutoid Man is a project that brings together some big names from the alternative margins of the metal world. There’s the singer-guitarist Steve Brodsky from Cave In and the drummer Ben Koller of Converge and All Pigs Must Die. Together with Nick Cageao on bass, they form a power trio that absorbs (and then releases onstage) the very best in uncompromising guitar music from the past couple decades. Hymnic heavy metal choruses clash with frenetic Mars Volta-style prog rock before blasting out of the psychedelic curve and into the final, furious hard-core stretch. Their massive debut album Bleeder is a must-listen, though nothing can really prepare you for what’s going to happen at this show.
Powell
According to Resident Advisor, “the club music Oscar Powell wanted to hear didn’t exist, so he made it himself.” The British producer Oscar Powell claims to love post-punk and no wave, but since drum’n’bass is the sound of his generation, he decided to combine all three. The result is a kind of dance music that is at once rough, abrasive, and menacing. He records on his own label, Diagonal, but also works with the Mute sublabel Liberation Technologies, and Death of Rave, a subsidiary of Boomkat. This sounds like the future.
Mass Gothic
Mass Gothic might be a new name, but it ought to catch the attention of anyone who’s into the melancholic electro-rock recordings of New York’s Hooray for Earth. Their frontman disbanded the group in 2014 and subsequently reinvented himself under the moniker Mass Gothic. “I allowed myself to return to the beginning,” he says. His repeat debut Mass Gothic, released on Sub Pop, continues his synth-rock odyssey, combining melancholy with post-punk hostility.
We love contrasts: it’s what the OFF Festival is all about. That’s why we’re inviting you to check out the performance by DJ Koze, one of the top producers on the German scene, as well as a dangerous experiment from New York City known as Show Me The Body.
DJ Koze
The DJ and producer Stefan Kozalla, better known as DJ Koze, is one of the leading figures on the German scene. A long-time associate of the legendary label Kompakt and head of his own label, Pampa, DJ Koze started out in underground hip-hop before moving up to the world’s top clubs with his thrilling dance productions. It’s only fitting that he’d get the honor of compiling the milestone 50th edition of DJ-Kicks for !K7: there are few producers in the world of contemporary electronic music that are as versatile as they are are distinct.
Show Me The Body
Remember last year’s Ho99o9 show? Prepare to sustain similar injuries at the hands of NYC’s Show Me The Body. Combining hardcore with noise and hip-hop, the trio is known for being one of the best live acts to demolish your favorite venue in the past ten years. The hype around these guys is going to get pretty loud. Their concert is going to be even louder.
Experience the best in alternative music this summer at OFF. Already confirmed acts: Anohni, The Kills, Mudhoney, GZA, Lush, GusGus, Thundercat, Napalm Death, Jaga Jazzist, SBB, Sleaford Mods, Lightning Bolt, Andrew Weatherall b2b Roman Flügel, Brodka, Kaliber 44, Daniel Avery, Clutch, Beach Slang, Willis Earl Beal, Flatbush Zombies, Machinedrum, Yung Lean & Fidlar.

Skrillex to headline Sea Dance Festival!
One of the most influential music icons of today, Skrillex, will play at Montenegro's top tourist destination Jaz Beach, for a spectacular opening of Sea Dance Festival on 14 July! The multi-awarded American producer had one of the most noted performances at Exit Festival in 2014. On that occasion, thrilled by the festival and the atmosphere itself, he even decided to stay and close Exit's Dance Arena! The beautiful Jaz Beach scenery which was declared as the best beach in Europe by Lonely Planet, as well as all the positive impressions from Exit festival, were a more than adequate reason for Skrillex to adjust his tour plan and continue on another Exit Adventure, the unique festival holiday package made of two award/winning festivals Exit and Sea Dance, held at two spectacular locations Petrovaradin fortress and gorgeous Jaz Beach!
With a total of 8 Grammy awards, Skrillex is currently holding a record amongst electronic music performers, and is one of five highest-paid DJs on the Forbes’ list. Skrillex surpasses electronic music as being one of ten most influential musicians of today by the “Billboard Social 50”, counting more than 4 billion YouTube views, 20 million Facebook fans, with 5 million people following him on Twitter, and 4 million on Instagram! Sonny John Moore, aka Skrillex, started his music career as a singer and a guitarist for the American band From First To Last, with whom he was part of the Warped tour from 2004 to 2007. Soon, he embarks on a successful solo career as an extremely talented producer, and in a very short matter of time, he gained planetary success thanks to his singles "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" and "Bangarang", as well as through various collaborations and projects with various electronic music superstars. During last year, together with another hitmaker Diplo, he released an album named Jack Ü, which brought him another two golden gramophones for the Best Dance Recording "Where Are You Now", done in collaboration with Justin Bieber, as well as the Best Dance/Electronic Album "Skrillex and Diplo present Jack Ü". Skrillex engages an exchange of powerful, unstoppable energy through his marvelously produced performances, an energy he himself claims impossible without the audience, who make the spectacle possible.

OFF Festival Katowice 2016: A killer dose of good music
They say it’s a good day if you don’t have to use your AK, but we’ll settle for a day when we get to announce the addition of a Polish hip-hop legend and five other excellent artists to the OFF Festival 2016 lineup: Anohni, The Kills, Thundercat, Kaliber 44, Willis Earl Beal, and FIDLAR.
Anohni
Anohni calls her debut release “an electronic record with some sharp teeth.” The voice and charisma familiar to fans of her work with Antony and the Johnsons returns in a new and original context on an album recorded in collaboration with Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke, two of the leading names in contemporary electronic music. Hopelessness juxtaposes dance beats with political lyrics that touch upon such topics as mass surveillance and drone warfare. Anohni takes her work to the stage with an unexpected twist, performing inside a live avatar.
The Kills
At the turn of the century, the American singer Alison Mosshart and the English guitarist Jamie Hince reinvented the sound of British garage rock, giving us something as loud and dangerous as it is catchy and sexy. And while in recent years Alison has spent more time appearing alongside Jack White in The Dead Weather than with her own band, and the tabloids have devoted more coverage to Jamie’s private life than his music, The Kills are just as deadly onstage as they’ve always been. Much time has passed since the 2011 release of Blood Pressures, the duo’s last album to date, and the word is that they’re working on a new record. Let’s hope we catch a glimpse of things to come this year in Katowice.
Thundercat
Stephen Bruner has lived and breathed music since the day he was born. His father, Ronald Bruner, Sr., played the drums for The Temptations and Diano Ross, while his brother, also a percussionist, has collaborated with Wayne Shorter and others. For a couple of years, the two brothers made up the rhythm section of hardcore legend Suicidal Tendencies. But Stephen’s true musical love lies elsewhere: it’s jazz and its ilk, it’s soul, funk, and hip-hop, and finally, it’s an original blend of all the above genres — a blend with which Thundercat charms his listeners on his own albums and as a guest musician for such artists as Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, and Kamasi Washington. We’re proud to host an artist of his caliber at the OFF Festival.
Willis Earl Beal
A charismatic outsider from Chicago who’s hard to keep up with and impossible to label. When critics and fans — enchanted with the rawness of his debut album Acousmatic Sorcery and the fervor of Nobody Knows — pigeonholed him as “new dark soul,” Beal opted not to mine the genre that brought him success, instead redirecting his efforts into musical experimentation. The result was the 2015 LP Noctunes, with its poignant, lazily-flowing hymns, brimming with pain and longing. But to truly comprehend the phenomenon that is Willis Earl Beal, you need to see him in concert, where neither emotion nor vocal talent can be faked — and you’d be hard pressed to find a more authentic singer.
FIDLAR
This is what it sounds like when you let a little sunlight shine into the garage. California’s FIDLAR (short for Fuck It Dog, Life’s a Risk) will sweep you away with their skate punk energy and laid-back surf rock riffs. There’s no way you’re not going have fun with these guys at a summer music festival, though the lyrics on their latest album, Too, are no mere party anthems: quite the opposite, in fact. They’re a warning about what happens when partying takes over your real life. Unless your drug of choice is music, that is.
Kaliber 44
Kaliber 44 needs no introduction in Poland and particularly in Silesia. They’re a living legend, one of Poland’s first hip-hop bands and the only one of their kind, though their psycho-rap style continues to inspire legions of imitators. If we could wait 16 years for AbradAb and Joka to release their latest album, Ułamek tarcia, we can wait another few months to see them live at the OFF Festival, especially now that we know what to expect. The brothers are back in top form and they can look forward to “a whole year of hands in the air,” to quote a line from one their new tracks.

Dave Clarke Charcoal Eyes: A Selection of Remixes from Amsterdam
DAVE CLARKE
CHARCOAL EYES: A SELECTION OF REMIXES FROM AMSTERDAM
RELEASE DATE: 16th APRIL 2016
Influential techno and electro icon Dave Clarke has put the finishing touches to a bold new remix project. Entitled Charcoal Eyes: A selection of remixes from Amsterdam, the collection will come out on vinyl, CD and digitally on April 16th and includes comprehensive sleeve notes explaining back stories to each track, as well as a special two verse poem penned by Clarke himself.
Now based in Amsterdam, long time English dance servant Clarke has been synonymous with an abrasive, full throttle brand of electronic music that he has showcased across hundreds of EPs, compilations and albums since the early nineties. Also a celebrated radio pioneer who helms his own long running White Noise show (which also spawned a label of the same name) he has recently finished building a new studio in Amsterdam where much of this work was completed.
Charcoal Eyes finds Clarke taking on a diverse range of artists and adding his own fingerprint to a smorgasbord of sounds. From punk to New Beat, fast rising modern day artists to sadly disbanded bands, a lot of ground is covered, but it is all tied together by the studio nous and singular style of this notoriously outspoken pioneer.
Opening up with a crisp rework of Placebo, the collection touches every shade of techno and electro from slick and futuristic to dark and heavy. importantly, a semblance of the original artists intentions always remains and much like his previous remixes of everyone from Fisherspooner to Depeche Mode, many of these are sure to become cult classics.

On the second day of Exit Festival, the crowd will be warmed up by the energetic performance delivered by Sarah Farina, coming straight from Berlin, and whose sets perfectly combine heavy bass with a futuristic rhythm protruding the walls of R&B and UK Funk. Sarah describes this style as rainbow-bass. Congo Natty, also known as Rebel MC, London’s jungle pioneer, arrives to the main stage on 8 July, with his utterly recognizable sound – a mix of pop-rap with hip-hop, dance music and reggae. On Saturday, 9 July, the Main Stage magic of sunrise will be kicked off by Canadian drum'n'bass producer Rene LaVice! One of Toronto’s best kept secrets, the most wanted North American DJ attracted the attention of BBC’s music giants, not to mention recognition by one of the biggest, most awarded producers, Andy C, who is also performing at this year’s Exit Adventure, at Sea Dance Festival! With huge support of “175 bpm” elite that includes Sub Focus, Sigma and Andy C, the leader of RAM Records, Rene has become one of the most wanted DJs of bass music. Grigory Cherekaev, Anton Mashevsky and Oleg Cholovskii, also known as Teddy Killerz will also shake up the audience at Exit’s Main Stage on Saturday, 9 July! Known for their diversity, they will present their mix that contains all aspects of drum'n'bass, dubstep, trap and breakbeat. After being recognized worldwide for remixing Skrillex’s "Make It Bun Dem”, they became a part of RAM Records, and remixed numerous tracks, including Skrillex’s "Ragga Bomb” and “Make Those Move” by I Am Legion, consisting of members from Foreign Beggars and Noisia, which were also no.1 on Beatport’s list for six weeks!
Sub Focus - Tidal Wave: https://youtu.be/B8vlk1UR99k
Leading dubstep and drum’n’bass producer Sub Focus, together with MC ID, comes to Sea Dance Festival’s main stage on Friday, 15 July, bringing some of the most known hits, such as "Rock It", "Follow The Light", “Last jungle” and "Out of The Blue". Sub Focus has worked together with biggest stars, also remixing some of them - The Prodigy, Deadmau5, Empire of the Sun and Dizzee Rascal, with regular performances at world’s biggest festivals. The same night on Main Stage at Jaz Beach features the famous Bristol duo, My Nu Leng, consisting of bassers Tommy and Jammo, joined by Dread MC on the stage. The fast-paced success on the music scene came with a brilliant skill in fusing together house, garage, and jungle rhythms, with recognizable high-pitched voals combined with drilling heavy bass in the background. With new releases on the way, as well as packed tour schedule with gigs always a ticket short, My Nu Leng, alongside their ever-present Black Butter crew, continue to conquer fans’ hearts and minds all across the world.
