Butch and Sebastian Hohberg present ‘Rebirth’, the debut EP from their fledgling label OTHERSIDE, designed as an outlet to present a more experimental “psycho-acoustic” sound.
For the new EP, Butch, the Cocoon, Visionquest and Sei Es Drum associate, as well as Bouq founder, teams up with long time friend and studio partner Sebastian Hohberg for a new track that comes complete with a remix from Cleymoore. Butch & Hohberg have done plenty of work together before and that really shows in this truly unique new single.
The excellent ‘Rebirth’ starts with scuttling bacteria sounds before a rubbery kick drum comes in to drive things along. Squelchy percussion, nimble bass notes and oodles of synthetic textured characterise it before subtly uplifting pads bring in some colour and electronic soul.
Two vinyl only remixes are also included – the first is a beatless atmospheric tool, and the second is a haunting, stripped down minimal remix from Portugal’s Cleymoore, who balances cold machines with spiritual organic samples and excels as a result.
Buy the EP digitally and a ‘melody tool’ version, which is all arpeggiated pads and sci-fi melodies, and an even dirtier, darker, more intensely rhythmic Redux version are also included.
This is a fine way to inaugurate a new label and fans of Butch’s tripped out, dark house and tech will find plenty to love here.
