ETEP presents 2020 results and first 2021 selection
2020 artists eligible for 2021 European Talent Exchange Programme
The first digital edition of showcase festival ESNS took place less than a month ago and the first selection of the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) 2021 is already here. The exchange programme, which focuses on offering European acts international opportunities, announces the first selection of 2021 and decided to give the acts of 2020 another year of support.
Results 2020
The year 2020 was different than any other year, since we all had to deal with a pandemic that brought the world to a standstill. Because of this, many ETEP festivals were cancelled or postponed. To still succeed in the mission of ETEP, to give emerging acts as much exposure as possible, we adjusted our strategy. Next to booking the ETEP artists, the festivals were allowed to promote them on their platforms if their festival could not take place. This resulted in 124 promotions for 74 acts from 21 countries by 74 festivals from 26 countries and a total of 45 shows by 40 acts from 26 countries playing at 12 festivals in 12 countries. In total there were 102 different emerging artists from 31 countries supported by bookings or promotions by ETEP festivals.
2020 acts are eligible for ETEP 2021
Despite the results from the ETEP 2020 programme, we chose to give the ETEP20 acts another chance at being booked by ETEP festivals. For this year’s ETEP-programme all festivals can select artists from both ESNS 2020 and 2021 line-ups.
First selection 2021
With ESNS just behind us, the first selection results are in. With 25 festivals voting for 136 artists, we present the artists to watch, according to the participating ETEP festivals.
Altin Gün (nl)
Daði Freyr (is)
Holly Humberstone (gb)
Alyona Alyona (ua)
Faux Real (fr)
These five acts are followed closely by Afrodelic (it), Donna Blue (nl), Finn Ronsdorf (de), Katy J Pearson (gb), Lous & The Yakuza (be), My Ugly Clementine (at), Nava (it), Personal Trainer (nl), Playback Maracas (es), The Goa Express (gb) and Yīn Yīn (nl).
Re-watch ESNS 2021
All ESNS21 shows have been broadcast during the festival last month. The shows can be re-watched on the festival platform via: 3fm.nl/esns. All videos are available until the end of this year.

About ETEP
The European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) was introduced in 2003 to stimulate the exchange of European artists across Europe, and would not be possible without the funding of the support programmes for culture by the European Union. ETEP has been one of the very first programmes to support popular music on a European level. Currently ETEP receives funding by the sub-programme "Culture" as part of Creative Europe.
An initiative of ESNS, ETEP facilitates the bookings of European acts on European & international festivals outside their home countries and generates extensive media exposure for these artists in cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) public radio stations, as well as national and international media. Additionally, ETEP actively cooperates with 18 music export offices. This way, ETEP aims to give a boost to the international careers of European artists and highlights the participating ETEP festivals.
Since the start of the programme ETEP has facilitated 4.437 shows by 1.649 acts in 38 countries, and we are very proud to have contributed to the careers of so many talented European acts. Many acts that received support from ETEP at the start of their careers have grown out to be very successful. Over the past 18 years, acts such as Agnes Obel, Ásgeir, Ben Howard, Benjamin Clementine, Calvin Harris, Christine and the Queens, Dua Lipa, Franz Ferdinand, James Blake, MØ, Noisia, Selah Sue, The Editors, The Kooks, The XX, Within Temptation and Years & Years have greatly benefited from the support of the ETEP programme. More recently, acts such as Alma, Altin Gün, Arlo Parks, Aurora, Black Country, New Road, Celeste, Fontaines D.C., girl in red, Idles, Mavi Phoenix, Meduza, Oscar and the Wolf, Pip Blom, Pongo, Shame, Sigrid and 5KHD played some of their first international shows with the support of the European Talent Exchange Programme.

GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOOR ON NIGHTCLUBS - Over 80% of nightclub businesses will not survive past February
Without urgent action 2021 will see the ‘extinction’ of nightclubs, warn the Night Time Industries Association. The failure so far of the UK Government to recognise the devastating impact of their actions on this sector is a tragedy for UK Culture.
Nightclubs and late night venues have been closed since March, with many suggesting they will not survive past the end of February. The facts stand that Nightclubs/Late Night Venues have been given limited, and in many cases hugely disproportionate support outside of Furlough for the year they have been closed and suffered extreme financial hardship for over 11 months, with many seeing the end of February as the last stand for their future.
As nightclubs and late night venues remain shut due to Government restrictions, Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), points to several factors that will cause many nightclubs and late night venues to go out of business in 2021, in the absence of Government support:
- A lack of appropriate financial support for the sector from the Government
- Proposed changes to planning laws that would allow landlords to convert venues in to housing
- Inability for venues to access finance from financial institutions
- Lack of transparent exit strategy for re opening of the sector in line with the Government vaccination rollout
Recent survey of over 100 Nightclubs has shown some catastrophic results:
- 88% of Nightclubs within the UK in Over 2 Months Rent Arrears with 50% Over 3 Months Rent Arrears moving into another Quarter at the start of January.
- 81% of Nightclubs within the UK will not survive past February without further support from the Government.
- 86% of Nightclubs have made redundancies with over 65% making over 60% of the workforce redundant before the end of 2020.
- 43% of Nightclubs surveyed had not received any Grant support from Government
- Average Rateable Value for a Nightclubs & Late Venues - £105,986
Says Michael Kill, CEO NTIA:
“We are on the cusp of losing a cultural institution, the Government has ignored the sector and failed to recognise its economic and cultural value.”
“We are a world leader in electronic music and clubs - and have been a breeding ground for contemporary music talent, events and dj's for decades. Nightclubs have made a huge contribution to our culture sector and are renowned globally”
"Throughout this Pandemic and the restrictive measures levied against the sector, it is clear that these businesses are being systematically eradicated from society. As they continue to be excluded from the narrative of press announcements and planning, and through misconceptions and misguided understanding
of the sector, from age old stereotyping the sector has been given little or no opportunity to re engage even with very clear ability to open spaces safely."
“The current proposed changes in planning reform under permitted development rights is a huge threat to the sector as this has the potential to allow for the demolition and rebuilding of 'vacant and redundant' light industrial buildings as homes, given that over 88% of Nightclub businesses are over two quarters of rent in arrears, we are poised for a windfall of landlords at the end of March when the Forfeiture Moratoria comes to end, reclaiming their property and utilising this mechanism to convert many of our much loved cultural spaces and social environments into housing."
"Banks and Financial services whether it be insurance or lending within the sector has been near on impossible, with confidence in the sector at a new low, coupled with ineligibility for much of the financial provision outside of furlough, the extensive period of closure without recognition of the proportionate financial support needed for these businesses is being perceived by the sector as negligence."
"Consider this as an Industry, we have faced extreme adversity during this pandemic battling against financial hardship, increased regulatory constraints, business critical planning changes, financial services turning their backs on us and the continued refusal for the leaders of this country to mention Nightclubs or Late Night venues within the narrative - This is not negligence, this an intention to cull the sector advertently"
"These amazing creative spaces are the breeding grounds for nurturing talent, bringing communities together, building resilience and expanding the global phenomenon around UK club culture and electronic and live music"
“The Government needs to support Nightclubs and Late Night Venues with a robust financial package and which is tailored to support businesses that have been closed since March and a roadmap giving a clear indication of the timelines for re opening against the backdrop of the vaccination rollout, to give hope to many who are overburdened with debt”
Graeme Park, DJ/Musician, Manchester:
“It is highly frustrating and disappointing that the Government continue to ignore and dismiss the valuable contribution that nightclubs have on society and the economy. The cultural significance of this vibrant and varied sector has given employment to many for decades and now faces an uncertain future. We need the government to enter into meaningful discussion to help support a sector that is recognised around the world for its creativity before it's too late.”
DJ Paulette, DJ / Musician, Manchester:
“Since March 2020, the arts and events sector (that contributes billions each year to the UK economy and has immeasurable value in terms of its societal / social and mental health benefits) has been unable to operate to any effective level and unable to offer anyone the right to stay, the right to play, the right to work or somewhere to go placing brutal pressure on the commercial landscape. Whilst rents and taxes continue to cripple businesses, this situation is reaching critical mass. A watertight rescue package is needed in order to support and restore the sector and to help it to return to world-beating form.”
Yousef, DJ. Circus events, Circus Recordings, Liverpool
“Circus has been the heartbeat for quality house & techno and broader electronic music in Liverpool and beyond for 18 years. I’s impact culturally can’t be under estimated. Consistently pushing the boundaries of how a line up and club experience should be, booking every major artist in electronic music, and developing many artists from their first gigs to a global presence, all with completely welcoming ethos.”
“Circus’ impact to the local economy is significant. Circus’ last event employs over 150 + people with over 3000 people attending. Locally with taxis, bars, hotels, clothes shops, restaurants all hugely benefitting from the surrounding eco system.”
“Furthermore much of the student population cites Circus as an additional reason to study in Liverpool. This has all completely stopped. The audience is ready to go, the artists are ready to go, and Circus is ready to open and welcome. For now after a generation of efforts we are living in a very precarious state of limbo.”
Damien Fell, The Arch, Brighton
“It’s been disappointing to see the lack of support for nightclubs in Brighton. We have a thriving city and scene with a large percentage of our customers traveling from surrounding areas, including London. The city is a melting pot of culture and diversity, and we pride ourselves on communicating the values and ethos of the city through our promotion of the best new and upcoming talent, in addition to welcoming big international names. Very soon we might not be able to do that anymore if support is not extended, while we are unable to reopen. We want to continue adding value to the city’s nightlife and community but time is running out.”
Laila Mckenzie, Freelance Promoter - Founder of Parallel Dimensions
“I have organised & promoted nightclub events for 18 years, not only is it my livelihood but it is my life. Venues are so important to our culture in the UK, nearly every festival organiser starts as a nightclub promoter. Nearly every big stage artist begins as a club artist. Without venues so many other businesses will be lost, it's just the night time economy that will suffer losing venues will have a domino effect. How will it be for the future generations without nightclubs to visit - life will be very bleak without them. We need to act now to save our venues.”
Hans Hess, Egg, London:
“The importance of Nightlife is a pivotal part for all generations and the culture of the UK but the government is not giving enough to support our venues, brands and promoters. People want to see the big DJs, Acts , the next to non lighting, sound systems, people go out to socialise with their friends and families, to dance, let off steam, celebrations that all leads to helping our society cope with everyday struggles, mental health +more.”
“The nightlife industry isn’t just about booking the biggest artists though, it’s about putting on shows to bring joy and happiness to all countless generations.”
“That’s why we feel we need to pressure the government, because when things go back to normal there won’t be any brands, venues or promoters left to help us through the times to lift the spirits of our nation without support from the government . Because one thing for sure when we do open people won’t be able to wait to go and dance and socialise with friends and family.”
“So Boris Johnson come on do the right thing and show your commitment to help the nightlife industry”
Drew Burke - Director Hangar, Birmingham
“Being the 4th biggest employer in the UK, the hospitality industry accounts for over 3 millions jobs, generating over £70billion of gross added directly to the UK economy with the umbrella effect providing trade for local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, salons, taxi services which many now sit redundant. This has effected not only business owners but staff who depend on their wages, breweries who provide beverages to venues, the customer who craves for social interaction and a release of work and home life duties, and so forth creating a huge domino effect what isn't being fixed. Without venues and nightclubs, a huge social void looms causing mass redundancies, and a huge influx on mental health.”
Mike Grieve MD SubClub, Glasgow:
The club and electronic music scene in Glasgow is amongst the most developed anywhere in Europe with a very well established network of promoters and clubs and a solid heritage going right back to the mid 80s. In the case of the Sub Club we have been consistently on the cutting edge since 1987. The cultural importance of that heritage to the city, and to Scotland more broadly, can hardly be overstated as all forms of arts and culture have been influenced over the decades, leading to a steady influx of young people from all round the world to study, work, live life and very often set up home in Glasgow.
Ricky Magowan, Colours, Scotland:
"Nightclubs & Venues are the life source and breeding ground for talent and social engagement within Scotland, and have an important part to play in the cultural ecosystem across the UK"
Carl Bathgate, Ghostwriter Consultancy & Events:
“These venues are essential to the ecosystem that promotes access to arts and culture in their regions. In terms of live music these institutions enable artists to hone their craft by performing live, raising their profiles and engaging with their fan base. These venues continue to support artist development throughout their careers.”
“Many of these venues are under imminent threat of closure although they are under normal circumstances sustainable businesses that are culturally and economically significant to their region. The effect of these closures would be devastating on the community and will have wide ranging cultural and financial implications especially when considering the resulting effects on many other businesses reliant on a vibrant night time economy.”
Ty Temel, Owner Halo Nightclub, Bournemouth:
“Nightclubs have been largely sidelined in terms of support but without them, there will be huge economic, safety and social consequences.”
“Economy: Our sector is a huge contributor to the local economy. The Bournemouth hospitality sector produces an estimated 134 million pounds annual revenue to the local economy. That doesn't include supply chain businesses such as transport, cleaning etc.”
“Safety: The wider implications of a well-managed local night-time industry should not be underplayed. There are hundreds of security staff, CCTV operators, first responders etc that remain fairly invisible to you, but who work closely with the local emergency services to make sure we create controlled and safe environment for people to enjoy themselves..”
“Social : Humans need interaction. Meeting people, socialising, making friends. Being included and feeling a part of something prevents feelings of isolation and loneliness. It’s so important. Many people meet their significant other or best friends on a night out. Those connections need to be facilitated and fostered.”“Nightclubs have been partially if not fully closed since March 2020 with no real light at the end of the tunnel. Yet have not received any of the benefits other hospitality sectors have received such as 'eat out to help out' for restaurants.”

EXIT Festival 20th anniversary celebration will be held according to plan in July 2021
EXIT Festival organisers remain optimistic about their 20th anniversary edition and would like to reassure fans who have contacted them in the wake of the cancellation of the Glastonbury Festival. Dates for this years event are set for 8th-11th July at the iconic Petrovaradin Fortress with world stars such as David Guetta, DJ Snake, Tyga, Eric Prydz b2b Four Tet, Paul Kalkbrenner, Nina Kraviz, Solomon, Boris Brejcha, Metronomy, Honey Dijon and many others who will be announced soon.
“We are very optimistic about the possibility of celebrating Exit's jubilee in 2021. Given what we have all been through in the past year, the euphoria at this year's festival can only be compared to the explosion of positive energy at the first international Exit in 2001, which occurred after a decade of isolation and conflict in the Balkans during the 1990s. of the last century. It was this release of huge repressed energy 20 years ago that led to the creation of the legend of Exit as a festival with the most exciting atmosphere where performers have some of the best performances in their careers. The safety of all our visitors, artists and staff is of course a priority, and last years Life Stream project gave us a vital opportunity to prove it is possible to host a Covid secure event with health and safety measures at the highest level” - said Dušan Kovačević, founder of EXIT festival.
Reasons for optimism are taken from the excellent speed of vaccination that Serbia has achieved, being the third in Europe and the seventh in the world in terms of the level of vaccinated population. This means that over 1 million people or about 15% of the total population will be vaccinated every month. Also according to previous research and the opinion of health experts at least 40% of people in Serbia already have Covid antibodies, although it is believed that this percentage is much higher. It is also expected that because of the high rate of mass vaccination, minimization of the virus activity will be achieved in the spring, bringing back the normalization of life and the relaxation of restrictive measures.
Last year, EXIT festival was one of the few festival events to have a live audience with its Life Stream project. A special challenge was the organization of the event itself, but even on such a demanding task, incomparable to anything so far, EXIT showed how a completely safe event could be organized even during a pandemic with the correct measures in place. This event was realized in cooperation with the UN World Food Program, the largest humanitarian organization in the world and the current winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and it marked the 20th anniversary of the festival, whose central celebration will take place from 8 to 11 July 2021 at Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia.
Some of the most prominent musical artists in the region and the world have already confirmed their performances at the festival this summer. These include David Guetta, DJ Snake, Tyga, Eric Prydz b2b Four Tet, Paul Kalkbrenner, Nina Kraviz, Boris Brejcha, Sheck Wes, Solomun, Sepultura, Metronomy, Dax J, Kobosil, Denis Sulta, Honey Dijon, Laibach, Juliana Huxtable, Francois X, 999999999 live, Onyvaa, Monosaccharide, Bokee, VTSS, SPFDJ, Marko Nastić, After Affair, Kristijan Molnar, Bokee, Coeus, Goblini, Ilija Djoković, Lag, Insolate, Layzie, Massimo, Reblok, Runy, Space Motion, and Thundermother.
EXIT Festival was established in 2000 in University Park as a student movement for the fight for peace and freedom, both in Serbia and in the Balkans. Over the past 20 years, it has grown into one of the most eminent music festivals in the world, bringing to Novi Sad, its venue, as many as two Best European Festival titles won for 2013 and 2017. The Festival is organized at one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Social responsibility remains one of the key aspects of the Festival through the work of the EXIT Foundation, whose social activism is focused on youth development and peace promotion, creative industries, environmental protection and destination branding.

ESNS Online Edition Exceeds Ambitious Expectations
Digital showcase festival and conference platform focusing on European Music attracted an audience worldwide
The first online edition of ESNS has exceeded all expectations; both the festival and conference platform have been visited en masse by music lovers and professionals worldwide with almost 4000 from 124 different countries. In line with the current safety measures in The Netherlands, the thirty-fifth edition of ESNS took place digitally. Despite the acts, audience and industry professionals being unable to meet each other in Groningen, they still managed to make the most of the virtual experience with daily live streamed panels and performances and online networking opportunities for professionals to meet each other in a virtual environment.
The online edition also brought new possibilities for networking, while artists gained a much greater reach for their showcases via ESNS channels and media partners. With this, the mission of ESNS was more than secured; promoting and circulating new Dutch and European music.
Robert Meijerink, head of programme of ESNS looks back on a successful edition:
“We are truly overwhelmed by the positive feedback, with many saying a new standard has been set, which is amazing and the digital edition has exceeded our wildest expectations. The ESNS platform is focused on new emerging acts from Europe and to bring together music professionals from all corners of the world to discuss the current and future of the music sector and its industry. Thanks to NPO 3FM and members of EBU, ESNS was able to reach an even bigger audience in Europe and beyond. We really hope we can organise a physical edition in 2022 and be together once again, but we will also expand our online ventures next year.”
ESNS 2021 - A recap of a digital festival and conference
Showcase festival
The digital platform of the ESNS showcase festival, built in collaboration with NPO 3FM, hosted exclusive live sets from 189 acts from 36 European countries. The shows, broadcast daily on four channels, were highly praised by media, music lovers and professionals. The showcase festival has been covered extensively by media partner NPO 3FM and European radio stations, united in the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). Dutch broadcaster NTR guided the viewer on Saturday evening in a two-hour program on NPO 3 with the Noorderslag festival with all Dutch showcases. All ESNS showcases are now available to watch at 3fm.nl/esns.
The sets were recorded by the acts in a short period of time throughout Europe, in collaboration with the EBU, export agencies, venues and festivals. A unique achievement; as 34 European countries were in a lockdown at the time. Many of the Dutch acts were able to record their performances at some of the much loved venues in Groningen, whilst following Covid Secure protocols, making it the first cultural event in the Netherlands with all crew, artists and suppliers tested for COVID-19.
Conference
The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have been an unprecedented blow to the music sector and as a result, the need to get together seemed greater than ever. Almost 4,000 delegates took part in the conference, themed 'The Road to Recovery' aiming to regain confidence, facing the current crisis and making a constructive contribution to a new future for Dutch and European music industry.
In 66 panels, featuring 274 speakers, industry professionals looked ahead and discussed the reopening of the live music sector, with conference attendees also scheduling more than 10.000 one on one meetings using the digital platform. The most viewed panels included 'Successful Covid Festival Formats', 'Streaming is here to stay!' and 'Platform Workshops with Bandcamp & Spotify' and also keynote interviews with Wendy Ong (manager Dua Lipa), Scott Cohen (Warner Music) and Neil Warnock (UTA).
