Klyne, Sevdaliza, Klangstof & more set to play Dutch Impact showcase at Reeperbahn

Dutch Impact is excited to announce the acts set to play its showcase at Reeperbahn 2016 and the presence of Dutch Impact Digital at Next conference during the festival.

The Dutch Impact showcase which highlights the best of Holland’s young talent will once again be returning to Reeperbahn festival for which The Netherlands is the focus country for 2016. The event will take place at Molotow on Thursday 22nd September and will see performances from Rats on Rafts, Afterpartees, Sevdaliza, Klangstof, Bombay and Klyne who will play to a host of key international media and industry delegates. Other Dutch acts confirmed to play the festival are Blaudzun, De Staat and Causes.

The Reeperbahn Festival combines a music festival with one of the most prestigious digital conferences in Germany called Next, an event for those who ‘’actively participate in shaping the digital transformation’’. In the vibrant surrounding of the Reeperbahn Festival, around 1000 delegates dive deeply into the world of tomorrow’s customers, business models and strategies, through a combination of presentations and workshops.

The Dutch organisations Buma Cultuur and iMMovator (digital media and innovation network) have partnered up to put together an attractive program for Dutch digital innovators that wish to expand their network in Germany and beyond. On Friday 23 September, the Dutch Impact Digital session will bring together a selection of Dutch companies to share their stories with the Next audience. The session will be highlighting companies at the cutting edge of media and tech, and will conclude with a networking event that wraps up the Dutch presence at the Festival.

In addition the Next conference will include a few selected Dutch speakers in their workshop program and offers a special discount to Dutch delegates.

Dutch professionals interested in attending Next or being part of the Dutch Impact Digital sessions, should contact Monique van Dusseldorp, international program director Next at monique@vandusseldorp.com

About the acts

Afterpartees
Originating from Horst aan de Maas, Limburg and driven by their love for energetic 70s punk and heartbreaking powerpop, Afterpartees wandered through The Lowlands with Iggy Pop, T-Rex and King Tuff blasting from the van’s crooked speakers. Their debut LP, ‘Glitter Lizard’ is a combination of happy childhood memories and a nihilistic teenage worldview whilst on stage, Afterpartees gamble all their chips, and cross all boundaries, real and imagined. They’ve toured with fellow Dutch musicians traumahelikopter, and played renowned Dutch festivals such as Best Kept Secret, Pinkpop, Into The Great Wide Open and Paaspop.

Blaudzun
Indie rocker Johannes Sigmond goes by the name of Blaudzun. Having played to sold out crowds on tour in Holland and Belgium and a host of coveted festival slots including Eurosonic Noorderslag, The Great Escape, SXSW and Sziget, Sigmond just keeps getting better and better. Blaudzun has multiple awards under his belt including an Edison for Best Male artist and two time 3FM Best Alternative act winner and also composed the official anthem for the Tour de France starting in his hometown of Utrecht in 2015. With new music in the pipeline since the release of critically acclaimed album Promises of No Man's Land, audiences can look forward to what the future holds.

Bombay
This indie rock trio’s incendiary live shows thrust them into the limelight grabbing the attention of audiences worldwide with the release of their debut album ‘Vulture/ Provider’. Bombay’s latest LP ‘Show Your Teeth’ is set to be even bigger and better than before, bringing post punk and 90’s grunge together with poppy hooks. This Amsterdam based bands live show will be the perfect showcase for their experimental, genre spanning sounds.

Causes
Four piece indie pop band Causes’ debut single Teach Me How To Dance With You was released in late 2014 in Holland and proved an immediate success; first being playlisted across all major radio stations and then quickly gaining Platinum status. With massive tours now under their belts including stops at Pinkpop & Appelpop as well as a headline show at the prestigious Paradiso in Amsterdam. Causes’ debut album, produced by Ian Grimble (Bears Den, Daughter) will be released in 2016 through RCA/PIAS.

De Staat
Dutch alt-rock quintet De Staat have played on every major stage in The Netherlands as well as renowned international festivals including Sziget and Glastonbury. Having debuted with an album which bagged them various prizes, they later received a 3FM Award for Best Alternative Act. Their successes kept on coming and four years later in 2013 the band were awarded an Edison, Holland’s most prestigious music prize. With a string of festival slots and huge support shows for the likes of Muse, the band are winning over international audiences and they are not to be missed.

Klangstof
Growing up in a remote area in the middle of Norway with a limited budget and no one to start a band with, Koen taught himself how to play and record. With his first track picked up by a local radio station his music started making its way across Nordic airwaves. He then went on to become a bass player in critically acclaimed indie band Moss which only confirmed his passion for playing solo, and so Klangstof was born. With acclaim from the likes of Zane Lowe and NME’s Matt Wilkinson, the epic soundscapes and guitars remind you of the quiet and fascinating Scandinavian nature, while the synthesizers and drum-machines sound bring an industrial feel. Klangstof continuously and unexpectedly unites the polar ends of the spectrum, in such a way that you want to both dance and cry while listening.

Klyne
Earlier in the year Klyne introduced themselves with the confident and fully formed sound of debut single Paralyzed. The song delivered an amazing mix of effortless and hook-laden production courtesy of Ferdous and a vocal pitched with such soulful warmth that its bearer, Nick Klein came across with an undeniable star quality. New single Closer, sets the duo apart as a hugely exciting prospect for 2016.

Rats on Rafts
Rotterdam based foursome Rats on Rafts’ fiery post-punk scourge has been compared to celebrated Northern English counterparts and erstwhile bands from Rotterdam’s rich fringe music scene. With their long-awaited and self-produced, recorded and mastered sophomore LP due for release this year, the Rats have finally captured a sound to truly call their own. Having released their debut LP The Moon Is Big to nation-wide critical acclaim, the Rats’ live shows rapidly gained notoriety within and beyond the Dutch borders from the likes of Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand), Will Sergeant (Echo & The Bunnymen) and punk figurehead John Robb (Louder Than War, The Membranes).

Sevdaliza
Sevdaliza is a self-taught singer-songwriter, visual artist and composer. Her creations contrast husky vocals with cutting strings and basslines creating an enigmatic mood. Drawing influence from several textures like skin and glass, Sevdaliza’s melancholic visceral voice floats over beds of mechanical instrumentation, creating dynamics of chaos and order. She plays with the simulation of identities and fantasies that can hardly be distinguished from reality, touching on philosophical issues creating a world where everything is possible. Her music is charged with demanding energy and an enormous amount of dynamics portraying a porcelain yet deep fullness. Having received worldwide attention for her two self-released EP’s in 2015 and some huge syncs to her name already, Sevdaliza is going to keep on growing.

OFF Festival Katowice 2016: Silesia Lives and Breathes Music

It’s no coincidence that Katowice was recently named a UNESCO Creative City in the field of music. Upper Silesia, and particularly its capital city, has been in love with music for generations.

Silesia boasts excellent festivals, splendid concert halls and a thriving club scene, but the local tradition of colliery brass bands, reaching back into the 19th century, is what brought music into people’s homes and onto the streets. Though there are fewer bands around today than there were a quarter century ago (just as there are fewer mines and miners), no traditional Silesian event is complete without an orchestra of black-clad men sporting red plumes in their hats.

Silesia is serious about classical music. This is the birthplace of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, whose Symphony No. 3, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, is among the most popular pieces of contemporary music, sampled by such artists as Lamb and, more recently, reinterpreted by Colin Stetson. Another Silesian composer, Wojciech Kilar, was a Leopoldian by birth but a Katowice native by choice. His rise to international fame came with a series of film scores, most famously the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula.

Since 1945 Katowice has been home to the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose new building at Wojciech Kilar Square is considered by visiting musicians to be one of the best concert halls in Europe. Another band with a new building — and a new program, combining contemporary music with alternative guitar and electronics — is Aukso, the excellent Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy.

Silesian blues is a phenomenon in itself. It’s hard to say why the genre fell on fertile soil in this particular region and bore better fruit than anywhere else in Poland, but one interesting theory says that blues is a rugged kind of music for hard-working people, and there have always been plenty of them in Silesia. Today the local variety of blues is most commonly associated with the band Dżem, especially with films like Destined for Blues, but don’t forget about such noteworthy pioneers as SBB, a band that combined blues and progressive rock. And remember: on Saturday, August 6, the trio Józef Skrzek, Apostolis Anthimos and Jerzy Piotrowski will showcase their legendary 1975 album Nowy horyzont in its entirety at the OFF Festival.
Metal has always enjoyed an equally strong following in Silesia, home of the band Kat, which inspired the entire contemporary Polish death and black metal scene. The region also gave us the collective Let the World Burn, comprising such acts as MasseMord, Duszę Wypuścił and, most famously, Furia, who have performed at the OFF Festival in the past. And then there’s nearby Sosnowiec (which isn’t in Silesia proper, but in the Dąbrowa Basin), home to the popular metalcore group Frontside and the post-metal sensation Thaw.

The city of Mysłowice has long been the cradle of alternative music in the region. This was where the band Myslovitz was founded and wrote their music (Artur Rojek, the creator of the OFF Festival, was their singer up until 2012, and now records as a solo artist), and where our festival was born. The same city give us such acts as Delons, Negatyw and Iowa Super Soccer. The now-legendary Lenny Valentino — at least the part of the lineup that didn’t hail from Sopot — was also a local Mysłowice band. Today Silesia is giving us new and interesting electronic sounds: check out some recordings by The Dumpling and Coals and see for yourself.

Polish rap is a genre that blossomed in Silesia in parallel to Warsaw and Kielce. The lyrics of Kaliber 44 and later Paktofonika expressed the mood of an entire generation. The emotions they conveyed weren’t always optimistic, as you’ll find out from the now-legendary albums Księga tajemnicza. Prolog and Kinematografia, or the film You are God. But today a new generation of rappers is changing the scene, among them Sztigar Bonko with his Silesian vernacular and the enormously popular artist Miuosh, not to mention Kaliber 44 with this year’s excellent comeback LP Ułamek tarcia. Naturally, we just had to invite them to the OFF Festival. Kaliber 44 will perform at the City of Music stage on Sunday, August 7, at 9:55 pm. Clear your calendars: this is one show you really can’t miss.

About the acts

PAUW
Fresh from conquering Eurosonic, Dutch psych rockers PAUW have recently released their debut album ‘Macrocosm Microcosm’ through Caroline International. PAUW meld influences including Earth & Fire, Pink Floyd, Tame Impala and Temples to soporific effect. Drowned In Sound called the album “Macrocosm Microcosm is an accomplished and ambitious record that works on every level” joining the likes of MOJO, Clash and Shindig praising their innate songwriting ability on their new LP. PAUW are undoubtedly psych pop’s new ambassadors.

Weval
This Dutch duo's incredibly catchy arrangements seem perfused by a rarefied pop magic that only a chosen few have truly mastered. Two obscenely talented youngsters named Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers are the brains and muscle of the operation, dreaming up slow-burning, emotive and highly dynamic electronic music with a taste for danceable drama and epic melodies. Brimming with powerful synth hooks, rousing rhythmic patterns and expertly juxtaposed intensities, Weval’s music lends itself rather well to a live setting with Harm and Merijn successfully adapting their intimate sound cosmos to active dance floors, bringing a heady vibe and lots of flexing bass to clubs and festivals all over Europe.Their sonic expedition moves deeper into uncharted territory in 2016 with the self-titled debut-full length „Weval“ - not a mere collection of interchangeable tracks, but an organically flowing record with emotional heft and a narrative thread.

OFF Festival Katowice 2016: More Jazz!

There’s something magical about the way jazz keeps reinventing itself and overcoming its own limits. That’s why we’re happy to announce that TaxiWars and Maestro Trytony are joining the OFF Festival lineup.

Does the voice of TaxiWars sound familiar? Sure it does! It belongs to Tom Barman, the vocalist of the accomplished Belgian act dEUS, whom we featured at the OFF Festival back in 2011. Now he’s coming back to Katowice, heading up a quartet he founded with the acclaimed NYC-based sax player Robin Verheyen. The two dreamed up a project that melds furious, high-speed jazz with poetry, and the results will please fans of Charles Mingus, Morphine, and Tom Waits alike. TaxiWars will perform at 5:50 on Saturday at the Trójka Stage.

It’s been 20 years since the premier of the legendary album Enoptronia, one of the most seminal records to come out of Poland’s yass revolution, which bridged the Polish jazz tradition with avant-garde rock in the late 1990s. To celebrate this auspicious anniversary, the band Maestro Trytony is getting back together and will play their first post-reactivation gig in Katowice. Led by Tomasz Gwiciński on guitar, the group will appear in its original lineup (short of the late bassist Tomasz Hesse). Maestro Trytony will play at 4:10 on Sunday at the Trójka Stage. TaxiWars and Maestro Trytony will be replacing Mutoid Man and Mass Gothic, who have dropped out of the lineup due to changes in their European tour schedules.

Here’s who we’re going to see onstage at the 2016 OFF Festival: Anohni, The Kills, Devendra Banhart, Lush, Mudhoney, Sleaford Mods, GZA, Minor Victories, Derrick May, Brodka, GusGus, Masecki vs Sienkiewicz, Jaga Jazzist, Thundercat, Napalm Death, Kiasmos, Andrew Weatherall b2b Roman Flügel, Kaliber 44, Clutch, SBB plays Nowy Horyzont, TaxiWars, Yung Lean, DJ Koze, Ziołek / Zimpel, Lightning Bolt, Pantha Du Prince presents The Triad, Daniel Avery, Powell, Flatbush Zombies, Liima, Rysy, Księżyc, Komety perform Partia, Zomby, Mgła, Maestro Trytony, Willis Earl Beal, Basia Bulat, Fidlar, The Master Musicians Of Jajouka, Orlando Julius & the Heliocentrics, Rødhåd, William Basinski, Beach Slang, Machinedrum, Lotto, Jenny Hval, Ata Kak, The Feral Trees, So Slow, Adam Gołębiewski, Janusz Prusinowski Kompania, Syny, 67,5 Minut Projekt, Jambinai, Sotei, Islam Chipsy, Show Me The Body, Goat, Kero Kero Bonito, Żółte Kalendarze, Niemoc, JAAA!, Lauda, Rosa Vertov, Odpoczno, Jóga, Heroiny, and Jesień.

There’s also much more to the OFF Festival than just the musical lineup. Join us for that magical, friendly and unique atmosphere that emerges when the best festival audience gathers at the picturesque Three Pond Valley to listen to the most beautiful music.

It’s this atmosphere that shines through in the new OFF Festival promotional video by Arkadiusz Nowakowski, a director who truly feels the music and has proved as much with his videos for Rebeka and The Dumplings (scoring a Yach Film Award for the latter’s “Betonowy las”). The video’s irresistible score comes from the track “Pink Eye” by JAAA!, who will be performing at this year’s OFF Festival on Saturday, August 6.

Bilbao BBK Live announce the full lineup and stages for this year’s festival

With just 3 weeks to go until Bilbao BBK Live takes over the Kobetamendi Hill, the festival reveals the full lineup and stage times for this year’s edition! The final additions to the lineup include Soleá Morente, K-X-P, Edu Imbernon and Soledad Vélez. These new acts join a huge musical lineup for 2016 that also boasts Arcade Fire, Pixies, Foals, Tame Impala, New Order, Underworld, Editors, Grimes, M83, Years & Years, 2manydjs, Father John Misty, Wolf Alice and many more.

Soleá Morente has managed to create bridges between traditional flamenco and contemporary pop rock and has now finally released her debut solo album. Hailing from Helsinki, K-X-P’s polyrhythmic electronic rock is born from an exciting mix of space rock, kraut, noise, dark techno and pop melodies and if their reputation is anything to go by, their intense live show shouldn’t be missed at this year’s festival! Soledad Vélez, a Chilean artist living in Spain, has surprised everyone with her third album, where she wanders far from the archetypal acoustic singer songwriter she started out as. Rhythms’ and synthesizers now accompany the artist's’ powerful and hypnotic vocals.

Guipúzcoa born quintet John Berkhout will visit Bilbao BBK Live after having reaffirmed their need to experiment and evolve. This time round their new and recent album ‘Bloo mind’ takes us to a new world of futuristic psychedelia. Correos first started to perform after winning a band competition in their home country, since then they have released three albums and continue to rely on their unreserved Spanish pop. Without doubt, Them Flying Monkeys are one of the most solid new and upcoming bands in Portugal and will be visiting Kobetas, by the hand of NOS Alive, to present their debut album, which blends British neo-psychedelia and alternative rock. Dekot are winners of this year’s Gaztea demo contest which has seen the likes of Belako, Delorean, Berri Txarrak or El Columpio Asesino rise to what they are today.

Two new artists will also join the Basoa line up, a new area dedicated solely to dance music. Multifaceted artist Edu Imbernon has already travelled around the five continents with his mix of electro, house and indie music (from Space Ibiza to Coachella) and now joins us at Bilbao BBK Live. Ibiza resident and electronic music connoisseur since the age of 14 years old, DJ and producer Javi Green will also take to the decks at Basoa.

Set high upon the Kobetamendi Hill with views overlooking the beautiful city of Bilbao and inviting golden, sandy beaches, Bilbao BBK Live offers the perfect fusion of holiday and festival. This years edition takes place from 7-9 July. Tickets, priced at £93.00 + bf are available now at www.bilbaobbklive.com.
